  • Forest management is not one size fits all. Different forest types, different ownership and different objectives create a vast mosaic of forest management across the Oregon landscape.
The New Carissa, an oil freighter, wrecked on the Southern Oregon coast in 1999. As part of a settlement, land was set aside to provide future habitat for Marbled Murrelet, a threatened species that was affected by the oil spill. Management of the land was entrusted to the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians. But managing for habitat suitable for the endangered and elusive bird requires a very long-term management approach for a very specific type of habitat.
This is one of a seven-part series exploring the wide range of forest management styles, and the combination of experts and resources that landowners use to achieve their forest management goals.
