  • Basic tactics taught to F-106 pilots in Cold War to combat MiGs. Starting with the hard turn, the Defensive Turn, the Scissors, the High Speed Yo-Yo, and the Barrel Roll Attack. I was an instructor in Aerial Combat Tactics for the F-106 and taught these maneuvers to our pilots. We then deployed to South Korea, where I nearly had a battle with 20 MiGs (see video North Korean MiGs).

    • @spiritofattack
      @spiritofattack  Před 4 lety +60

      Situational awareness comes with experience. In my first flights, I was so focused on the problems in the cockpit that my mind was just on the present, and the next thing the I was scheduled to do. I was amazed in pilot training that my instructor could see another plane and knew who was the instructor or student in that plane! As I gained experience, I became aware of traffic patterns and who was where. The Tactical Situation Display (TSD) in the F-106 was a great leap forward in giving the pilot a view of the air battle. They say the F-35 has displays that are a quantum leap in understanding the air battle -- that is situational awareness on steroids!

    • @spiritofattack
      @spiritofattack  Před 4 lety +22

      I really wanted to share stories with the ground crews -- but you know how life is, there are always pressing things to be done. Also, we were always told about secrecy, so don't tell anyone without a need to know. In retrospect, the ground crews DID have a need to know -- it would have greatly improved their morale and improved getting the job done! I was always tired & sweaty, and had to debrief with Intelligence and Maintenance, then I was hungry and thirsty and would head back to the barracks for a shower and a change of clothes. I didn't ever think of going back on the flight line -- the refueling and rearming crews would be there, not the crewchiefs that sent me up -- and they had their jobs to do and not talk to pilots. There just never seemed to be the right time...

    • @spiritofattack
      @spiritofattack  Před rokem +4

      I often wanted to talk to the crew chiefs, but we were always being told that everything was SECRET. We were flying into places where we weren't supposed to be, like Laos and Cambodia in the F-100. My biggest F-100 ground-support mission was the Battle of Prey Tortung (see CZcams video). I saw crew chiefs straining to listen to what I was telling Intelligence, but even being in Cambodia was SECRET, so I couldn't tell them what their plane was doing! In the F-106, we were off the east coast of North Korea and within range of Russian fighters -- we were on a knife-edge of war. See my videos "North Korean MiGs". My buzzing a Russian ships off the coast of North Korea could have started a war (see videos "SOMETHING BIG #1" and "SOMETHING BIG #2". I love to tell stories, but I couldn't tell our crew chiefs about it when it happened!

    Our elders collectively hold what would seem like endless amounts of knowledge & wisdom, I think many (myself included) tend not to give as much thought about & often overlook the seniors we cross paths with in life. I’d be willing to bet if we were to stop & take just a few minutes every so often to pick their brain, we would be amazed at what we learn & more times than not, walk away a wealthier person having gained wisdom passed down from a more experienced, knowledgeable generation.

      #CM I kept the video as short as possible, and eliminated such things as the Lufberry Circle and the Low-Speed Yo-Yo because they were less important. I also didn't talk about momentum and that a fast jet cannot slow down quickly. In one battle with an F-4, I got on his tail and was close behind him, practicing using my IR to lock onto his big afterburners, which were glowing red right ahead of me. Suddenly he gave up, came out of afterburner, turned back to the base and wiggled his wings for join-up. His F-4 had so much drag that it seemed to stop when he reduced thrust. My F-106 had much less drag and, even with my engine in idle and my speed brakes out, I almost went right past him! I discovered that the F-4 could beat the F-106 by suddenly coming to idle -- we couldn't slow down fast enough!

    • @spiritofattack
      @spiritofattack  Před 4 lety +7

      I found that a successful barrel roll attack requires a very high pullup to be close to vertical. Timing is critical because closing speeds will be great. Miss your timing and you're out of the fight.

  • @jeffjefferson2676
    @jeffjefferson2676 Před rokem

    When the scissors were explained, i wanted to start about the High Yo-Yo, then i scrolled down and saw it was the next topic.. Yes, i can say it does work rather well in combat flight simulators. Especially when you are higher than everyone else, and dive with you buddy onto other planes flying. You unload on them an then pull up again. If there are not too many other enemy planes flying around you can pursuit with the high yo-yo. But that was with WW2 planes that could withstand high speeds like the FW190. With all these guided missiles, you would not want a nose of an airplane on you even when its from down there.
    I really liked the explanation of the barrel roll attack. It really showed it well, better than the illustrations going around on the internet. I checked "Basic fighter maneuvers" on wikipedia, it should have most maneuvers on it.
    Thank you for sharing your wisdom and knowledge!

    This was a great little video. Thank you for your presentation. Although I’m no real fighter pilot and won’t be engaged in aerial combat anytime soon, I can sure apply this to video game simulations. I was once told when doing the barrel roll attack, if you imagine an arrow pointing out of the top of your canopy, you keep it pointed at the enemy aircraft. It should give you enough roll and allow you to keep eyes on your Mig.

    • @spiritofattack
      @spiritofattack  Před 2 lety +1

      Not so. You're describing a high-speed yo-yo. The barrel roll attack is for even higher angles off. You pull almost vertical, and then OPPOSITE to his turn. If he is turning left, you roll to the right. The "arrow at the top of your canopy" would point AWAY from the enemy, and you lose sight of him for several seconds. It's so hard to do right, and so many things can go wrong, that I don't recommend it. I tried it four times, and it worked only once. When it worked, it was fantastic -- but missing something (not pulling up vertical enough) takes you completely out of the fight.

    • @Joe091680
      @Joe091680 Před 2 lety

      @@spiritofattack Yes, I was told you will climb up, angle depending on airspeed, and as you roll away, you will lose sight of the enemy but I was still told to use the canopy to reference the target and roll in behind them once you were inverted at the top of your roll. So essentially, the best way I can explain it without a diagram is, pull up, roll left if enemy is passing to your right, look left, then, when you're inverted, look down, and when your roll in behind him, you're looking right. Robert Shaw explains it well in his Fighter Combat book. But yes sir, I agree, you would temporarily lose sight of the enemy turning the opposite way as your fuselage and wings would hinder line of sight. Again, since I am not a fighter pilot (only in my dreams) I can play my simulators and do this many times in good practice. I envy you got to experience this in flesh and bone.

      Timing and judgment are critical. I’ve seen pilots really screw up these basic maneuvers! The Barrel Roll Attack is so difficult that I succeeded once in three tries. These maneuvers assume that the enemy doesn’t maneuver, and he almost certainly will do something to counter your attack. That’s what makes fighter tactics a skill that takes practice against other fighters!

      I'm not sure if real tactics would work in DCS games. From what I've seen, the games usually start with a "merge" where everyone is equal and they are committed to the fight. In the real world, someone usually has the advantage, and there are rules of engagement to consider. What is your mission? If your mission is to bomb, you don't fight, but evade the enemy and go for your target. When my four F-106s were challenged by 20 North Korean MiGs off the coast of North Korea, our mission was to protect a slow-flying EC-121 recon plane at low altitude. Our mission was not to start another Korean War. When the MiGs turned away from the recon aircraft, we turned away from them. I doubt if any DCS game would tell you how four F-106s should engage about 20 MiGs of different types. I had my own plan, and think I could have killed two MiGs and gone home for a drink at the Club.

    There are few ways to counteract this:
    As defender making hard turn right and wait until the attacker nose up in opposite side, he (attacker) has done barrel roll and as soon as the attacker starts to plunge on the defender from above (finalising high speed high yoyo;
    The defender simply does 90° barrel roll downwards, nose down or nose left to go left then nose up; getting the attacker to go down to the right and defender going up to the left; finishing with high yoyo and going on attacker's six.
    That's a form of low, reversed yoyo; correct me if I'm wrong in the name.
    Or the defender could just break to the left and nose up.
    All that depends on, as Mr. Gordon have said; keeping an eye on opponent, The Timing and that the attacker won't deviate from his downwards trajectory; although little he could do.
    Thank You for reading,

    • @spiritofattack
      @spiritofattack  Před 2 lety

      Yes, for every maneuver there is a counter maneuver. However, keep it simple, because you don't know what the enemy will do. Different aircraft will have different capabilities. Your solution sounds too complex. It's best to think of the aircraft differences and play to your advantages. The basic difference of USAF fighters vs MiGs was that the USAF fighters had more power and could go faster, but the MiGs could usually out-turn us. You go into battle with two rules: "Speed means life" and "Don't turn with a MiG". Most stories don't mention the importance of altitude. The F-106 had an advantage above 20,000 feet, so stay high and don't go down into the weeds unless the tactical situation requires it.

      Right now I seem to be in a series of interviews with online groups I've only recently discovered. In August, I interviewed with Aircrew Interview of the UK, about electronic warfare. Next Wednesday (Oct. 7th) I will interview with an Italian on Millenium7. I'll probably have two interviews with him. Wednesday's interview I have planned as a "shoot-'em-up", stories of my F-100 missions in Vietnam. I'll aim it at an audience who wants to hear of how I rolled napalm down a dry stream bed loaded with North Vietnamese troops, and could feel the shock waves of my own bombs. Future interviews will be about the F-106 -- which was a lot more technical than the F-100. In December, I will interview with Fighter Pilot Podcast. Meanwhile, my book "The Spirit of Attack" is being translated into Russian by a guy in St. Petersburg. This is keeping me busy, for a 86-year old man!

    Not sure if I agree that the F-106 would beat the F-4 everytime. It was better in the one circle at high altitude and but the F-4 would crush it under 30,000 feet in a two circle. Oh, and the F-4E had maneuvering slats which made it more maneuverable than the F-106.

    • @spiritofattack
      @spiritofattack  Před 2 lety

      No, I didn't say the F-106 could beat the F-4 every time, and the F-4E was almost a generation later than the F-106 with lots of improvements. Altitude is critical -- the F-106 was best at high altitude. Lots of planes could probably beat it at lower altitudes. An advanced F-106X was proposed, but the money went to the F-15 development. The F-4 versions that I met were the F-4C and F-4D. The F-106 usually stayed above 40,000 feet, so going down below 30,000 feet would be "low altitude" for us. I did out-turn an F-4C at low altitude and generally at low speed, but that was one engagement and I generally wouldn't put the F-106 against the F-4 at low altitude.

      The problem with these basic tactics is that the easy counter to it is to just turn into the attack. Turning into the attack will foul up all these easy maneuvers. It mostly works if the other guy doesn't see you! The basic defensive maneuver is to TURN INTO THE ATTACK.

      Good to hear from Argentina! I watched the battle for the Malvinas with interest, and was impressed with what the Argentine Air Force did with a few fighters and a few Exocet missiles. It was only matched by the heroism of the British troops at Goose Greene. I visited Argentina in 2012, and was surprised by the number of public signs talking of re-taking the Malvinas. I understand there might be oil there. Comments?

      I am surprised that there are not more videos about these basic tactics, but I haven't seen any. Radar and missiles have changed modern tactics substantially -- these tactics apply to guns-only. I have a video, "North Korean MIGs" that indicated what could have happened when, in 1969, four F-106s with radar & missiles were challenged by about 20 North Korean MIGs which had only guns. We had good ground radar coverage of the threat, so we could attack them from the front and fire from the front BEFORE the "merge". Then, continue straight until out of sight, turn around, and make another attack from the opposite direction. I think I could have shot down two MIGs that day, with little risk to myself. Technology is a game-changer. A stealth fighter like the F-35 (or China's J-20) would render the F-106 helpless. New technology is worth its high cost!

      I’ve never done heavy maneuvering in a jet aircraft but I have done it a high-performance piston aircraft, if you’ve never pulled Hi g in an aircraft you have no idea how strenuous it is on your body. Trying to move your head and focus during 6-9g... is not as easy as sitting behind the cpu on a flight sim. You are fighting Maintaining consciousness

      If you think about it, as a pursuer, you wouldn't have to pull as hard IF you have off boresight targetting and missiles that can pull g hard enough. Why would you close so close to your target to force an overshoot anyway? However, I don't discount that either missiles and/or drones will make ACM obsolete or much less effective OR technology will render air-air missiles obsolete or much less effective.

      People who use computer games to show maneuvers underestimate the difficulty of doing the basic maneuvers correctly. I was surprised to see how many pilots missed basic maneuvers. A new generation, raised on computer games, may try things that are effectively impossible to accomplish in the real world -- especially when the enemy does not do what you expect him to!
