There is a picnic area at Carpenters. Also a passing track. When they are running 2 trains during the peak season this is where they meet. Now this has been the case since I have been going there as an adult since the late 70's. I am not 100% sure if this was the case in the 60's The picnic area has benn there a while.
I don't 100% understand what you mean, but I believe you are trying to ask if the place at the beginning of the clip is east Strasburg and if so, why the whole train is going forward and not just the Locomotive (I assume you mean the Locomotive not pulling the train when you say just the engine) My answer is that Yes, it is East Strasburg, as that is the only place that they have had a water tower and a engine shed (visible in the back of the shot) And the whole train is moving forward to get all of the coaches next to the station platform. Only once all of the coaches are at the platform, the locomotive uncouples, and moves forward by itself.
@@capitollimitedproductions211 No they dont, they were bought by another railroad kuseum, the open air gondola is now part of there heritage freight car fleet as a steel gondola
slight issue with the title... the Strasburg railroad owned PRR 1223 from 1965 to 1989. The title states that this is from 1961 and the description states that it is from 1962...
Correction, SRC took delivery of the 1223 from the PRR Northumberland collection in 1960. It sat dormant on static display until 1965 when SRC officials approached the PRR president for permission to restore the 1223 to operating condition. It was first steamed up later that year and it’s first assignment was as a passenger helper which pulled the train past the road engine in east Strasburg before the run around track was installed.
Sir , I was told by Mr. Muller him self where he got the water tower from. He told me the water tower came from Wanamaker Kempton & Southern who bought it off Strasburg Railroad for when they replaced it with a larger one. Len.
I took my kids there last year. Not to mention I was there in the 70's when I was a kid. It has changed alot.
Too bad they don't have the gondola on the trains anymore... that was a nice car. Amazing footage.
B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L footage! Not to mention rare!
I wish they still had an open air car - I would ride it every time I went!
Incredible footage. Never thought I'd see 1223's bell being hand rung...
Same for 7002
My god that was cool. Never knew they did that even if it was a 1 time thing. Same for 7002 and 475 (even tho she’s not in this)
would love to the return of an open air car !
WOW
I NEVER thought to see 1223 operational.
I wish some of the footage could have been more than looking out the window but AWESOME footage.

Nice seeing the area minus all the modern day tourist traps. Excellent video.
I love this footage! Pennsylvania #1223 pulling in the a passenger train makes a great picture.
Great footage. Is it just me or does it seem like they used to run a bit faster back then than they do now?
The line was also extended to I’m pretty sure
@@rkpr9370 it's sound footage, so the cameras were designed to run at the proper speed to record in real time.
1:39 that wheel slip
What a great video. I like how they had to stop on the return trip at carpenters because of the crossing. What great footage
love that pennsy 3 chime on 1223
Wow this is pretty cool
Wow! That is all I can say. Its amazing!
@david245611 The 1223 has an air clapper, not an air rocker. But it is interresting they didnt use the clapper.
If you want to ride a gondola, you can go to the WK&S, Kempton, PA. They have it on the train most of the time.
The water tower is now located on the former Blue Mountain & Reading railroad at South Hamburg, PA.

there's 1 problem with this 1223 didn't start operating on strasburg til 1965

I wish they they still used the gondola too.
i wish the camelback was back in operation
Strasburg1991 I heard she doesn’t steam well enough to constantly pull trains back and forth, she is only a switcher
@@rkpr9370 was.

1187 is inefficient and illegal to operate
In the begining of the film where they at east strasburg and is so why was the whole train going forwords and not just the engine

Big Jim, they do have an open car.
Robert John Davis But it's not open roofed.
There is a mistake with the year 1225 didn't start operating on strasburg til the mid 60s. Also had no clue that 1223's was hang run once.
Great footage! Looks very different from today! where did the steel coaches and the open air car go?
Otaku Railfan They still have the steel coaches.

they never owned 1223. After PRR, she was owned by the state, and leased to SRR.

Incorrect year,this is mid 1966
That's what I was thinking. 1223 wasn't at Strasburg until 1962 or 1963
it's actually sad that they did not keep the metal coaches
Engineer5344 Actually they still have some steel coaches.
As in the Excursion Coaches?
why is it moving fowards? shouldn't they pull it tender first just like they mostly do?
what happened to the old wooden water tower?
It was replaced, as I recall the bottom was falling out of it
Make sure Conrail6370 does not copy and steal this from you.
don't care
?
What? 😕
