In China, people are rarely referred to by their given name. Sometimes people do use it for friends or younger family members, but only if it's a two-character name, which would be two syllables long. With one-character given names, which would be one syllable long, it sounds VERY weird if you call someone that.
Usually, you'd use full name to address one's classmates and coworkers. A teacher/professor would also use the full name to address their students, and I think a superior sometimes uses it to address their employees. It usually implies a degree of professional neutrality, like you respect them as an equal but you're not friends.
With non-family members of one generation above, you call them auntie or uncle, used the terms for mother's sister and father's younger brother. The fact that you're not specifying birth order is what clues you in to the fact that they're not YOUR aunt or uncle. You can also affix either their family or given names to the title. With non-family members of two generations above or older, you call them grandma or grandpa, using the terms for your paternal grandparents. Again, you can also affix their family name.
With older family members, you'd call them by relationship and birth order. So my mom being the oldest of three daughters, I would call her two sisters Second Aunt and Little Aunt, and my youngest aunt would call her sisters Big Sister and Second Sister. In Chinese, family terminologies are also much more detailed. There are different words for if they're related by marriage or by blood and whether they're on your mother's side or father's side, so there is never any confusion on that end.
With younger family members, you usually call them by a nickname that parents give their kids at birth. A common type of nickname that is used around the family involves duplicating one character of the person's given name. Some people choose a completely unrelated character to duplicate. Some regions add "a" as a prefix to one character of their given name. Some people give their child a literal nickname that might be the name of an everyday item. A lot of the time, kids outgrow these names, sometimes taking on a more adult-sounding nickname.
With in-laws, you follow whatever your spouse calls them. When talking about them in third-person, you have terms for your particular relationship, and those differ depending on whether you're a man or a woman. But when talking directly at them, you're expected to call your spouse's mom mom and your spouse's dad dad, and so on and so forth for all their family members.
With friends or people you meet in social settings, you have a lot of options. Some friends call each other by full name. Some call each other by given name if it's a two-character given name. Some use a nickname, the most common being the character for small/little along with their family name, so someone named Li Xue (Li being their family name) might be called Xiao Li (Little Li). Since it's based on their family name, it's rarely the same nickname used within their family, but they usually do use the same nickname over and over as a preferred name. With older friends, some affix the character for older brother or older sister after a character or two of their name. When someone has a two-character family name like my mom does (very rare), some people would just call them by family name without their given name altogether.
With teachers, professors, superiors, or professionals you want to respect, you call them by family name plus a title. If you don't know their title or don't have one that sounds right as a title, you might just call them Boss or Teacher, because chances are they're the boss of something and has the ability to teach you something. I always found it interesting and hilarious whenever people call my mom (a research scientist) teacher, when she doesn't teach at all.
Someone working in the service industry would probably call your client or customer Mister/Sir, Miss, Sister, Brother, Auntie, Uncle, etc. In response, a client or customer might call them Mister/Sir or Miss or, in the restaurant industry, they sometimes call their waiter or waitress handsome boy or beautiful girl, no flirting implied.

In my school in India they taught us the scientific reason for touching feet which is really interesting:
    1. According to science, a human body contains negative and positive currents of electricity. The left side of the human body carries negative current and the right side of the body has positive current. Therefore, two halves together complete a circuit built of positive or negative. And so it is suggested that while touching the feet, we should cross the hands. So that the positive current in both flows in a uniformed circuit and similarly negative flows jointly in a circuit. Thus, both the currents formed a well-unified circuit.
    2. We all know that nerves coming out of the brain are present all over the body. These nerves end at the fingertips of hand and feet. So, when you touch your fingertips to the opposite feet of the elder, the energies of two bodies are connected. Fingers and palms become the receptor of energy and feet of another person as giver of energy.
    3. When you touch the feet of an elder keeping aside your ego, then the elder accepts your shraddha or your reduced ego and their heart emits positive vibes or thoughts and energy, we can also say it as karuna which reaches you through their hands and toes.
4.We can also say that a kind of cosmic energy also released while touching the feet that connect each other’s mind and heart. The same we can say with handshakes and hugs also. It is said that when you touch the feet of a good soul, you will choose the right path or you will get the right direction in your life to work.

      @debd6246 Před 10 měsíci +5

Firstly, there's no such thing as "positive" and "negative" currents of electricity within the human body. While the body does have electrical activity due to nerve impulses and cellular processes, it's not divided into positive and negative halves. Neurons transmit signals using changes in voltage, but this has nothing to do with positive and negative currents. Secondly, the claim that the left side of the body carries negative current and the right side carries positive current is utterly baseless. Our nervous system operates through a complex network of neurons and synapses, with electrical signals transmitting in all directions, not just along specific sides of the body. Furthermore, the notion that two halves of the body completing a circuit is needed for some sort of "uniformed" or "well-unified" flow of currents is nonsensical. Biological systems are not electrical circuits in the same way that wires and components in electronics are. The body's biological functions are regulated by a multitude of intricate biochemical processes, not by completing a circuit like in an electrical device. The suggestion of crossing hands while touching feet to ensure the "uniformed circuit" of currents is just a mix of vague and inaccurate terms. Our nervous system doesn't work like an electrical circuit where crossing wires makes a difference. The way electrical signals travel in our nervous system is a result of the interaction of neurotransmitters and receptors, which has no correlation to the positioning of hands while touching feet.
The explanation you provided regarding touching feet as a way to connect energies contains several inaccuracies and unscientific claims. Nerves from the brain do not "end at the fingertips of hand and feet." Nerves extend throughout the body, and their distribution is not as simplistic as connecting to just fingertips. Nerves are complex structures that innervate various tissues, transmitting sensory and motor information. Moreover, the idea that touching fingertips to opposite feet results in the exchange of "energy" lacks any biological basis. There is no scientific evidence to support the notion that specific hand-foot interactions lead to the transfer of energy between individuals. Energy, in a biological sense, pertains to metabolic processes within cells, not some mystical transfer between humans through physical touch. Labeling fingers and palms as "receptors of energy" and the feet of another person as "givers of energy" is entirely unsubstantiated by any physiological or anatomical knowledge. Touch involves sensory receptors that detect pressure, temperature, and other tactile sensations, not the exchange of energy in the mystical sense you describe.
The explanation you provided for touching the feet of an elder is a concoction of unscientific assertions. The notion that touching someone's feet reduces your ego is a baseless claim. Ego is a psychological concept rooted in one's self-image and confidence, and physical actions like touching feet do not alter it. The idea that an elder's heart emits positive vibes and energy that you receive through their hands and toes is purely pseudoscientific. Human bodies do not emit or transmit energy in the manner described. Energy transfer in biological systems occurs primarily through chemical reactions and electrical signals in nerves - not through vague notions of "positive vibes." Furthermore, the term "karuna" is misused here. Karuna is a Sanskrit word commonly translated as compassion or empathy, but it's not related to emitting energy or vibes through physical contact. In reality, touch can indeed have psychological effects due to the release of hormones like oxytocin, which is associated with bonding and social interactions. However, this has nothing to do with receiving "positive vibes" or "karuna" energy.
The explanation you provided about cosmic energy being released while touching feet and connecting minds and hearts is bogus and lacks any basis in established biology or physics. There is no empirical evidence to support the notion of cosmic energy being released through physical contact, whether it's touching feet, handshakes, or hugs. Furthermore, the idea that touching the feet of a good soul leads to choosing the right path in life or getting the right direction lacks any biological or physiological mechanism. Human decision-making and life choices are complex processes influenced by cognitive, psychological, and societal factors, not by the act of touching someone's feet. In reality, physical contact between individuals, such as handshakes and hugs, can have social and emotional significance, but attributing it to the release of cosmic energy or mind-heart connections is pseudoscientific and unsubstantiated. If you're looking for valid explanations, it's important to rely on well-established scientific principles rather than unfounded claims. So, go tell your school to revise what they teach.

Science can analyze the physical aspects of life, but it's spirituality that uncovers the deeper meaning and purpose.
The explanation I provided is an interesting interpretation from a cultural and spiritual perspective. However, it's important to clarify that this explanation doesn't align with our current scientific understanding of the human body's electrical currents.
In reality, the human body doesn't have distinct negative and positive currents as described. The body's electrical activity primarily involves the nervous system, which uses electrical signals to transmit information between cells. These electrical signals are more about the movement of ions (charged particles) across cell membranes rather than distinct positive and negative currents within different sides of the body.
Cosmic energy" is a term often used in spiritual and esoteric contexts, but it doesn't have a widely recognized scientific definition. In physics, energy is typically associated with various forms such as kinetic, potential, thermal, electromagnetic, and more. The concept of cosmic energy, as described in spiritual contexts, goes beyond the scope of conventional scientific understanding.
It's important to note that while scientific concepts are grounded in empirical evidence and rigorous testing, spiritual or metaphysical concepts like cosmic energy are often subjective and may not have the same level of empirical validation within the scientific community.
What I wanted to make people understand through this "scientific basis" that was taught to us in school is that these concepts have more of a metaphorical or symbolic connotation that draws inspiration from scientific concepts. It's not a concept that aligns with our current scientific understanding of human physiology and electricity.
Even I am not foolish enough to believe whatever someone has taught me. I am well versed that as per current and existing scientific principles no such concepts can be on the same level of empirical validation.
The explanations provided align with the cultural and spiritual beliefs surrounding touching elders' feet in various traditions. While these concepts may not have a direct scientific basis, they do reflect the profound symbolism and intention behind the gesture. It's fascinating how cultural practices often blend elements of belief and tradition with aspects of human physiology and energy.
I appreciate you for explaining and foremost dissenting based on current scientific parlance but sadly you missed the whole point of the corroboration of spiritual values with scientific values.

Through your videos I discovered that there are a lot of things that I do like Koreans. I'm not Korean, haven't been to Asia (not during this existance at least) and became interested in Korean culture only recently. Weird, huh?
And to tell you a funny story about that, when I was in middle school I had a classmate who is chinese (back in the day it was uncommon to have an asian classmate). So at the first meeting between the class teacher and the parents, the kids were asked to attend too. So, as we were gathering, the moment my classmate's mum saw me she came straight to me and started talking casually in Chinese about her son as if she'd known me all my life. I had to look for my classmate to translate because both his parents spoke only Chinese at the time. 😂
Even nowadays it is a constant thing to be approached and if I'm in a group, Asian people usually approach me out of the group. I don't know why. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I actually know why American bathrooms have this. It's to prevent people from doing bad things or to rescue someone. Like for example, if someone was using drug, smoking, passing out, etc. we can easily get them by crawling under the door. It's also shows if the restroom is occupied or not. it also helps with air flow and circulation. I do agree it should be a bit longer and I have the gaps in between bc it's just sketchy.
