The art of the Lorwyn/Shadowmoor block was simply brilliant.
The era before Wotc started to forced rules to the artists and all the cheap digital art.
In my opinion, 2005-2012 was the peak of MtG art.
I would say The Dark was Magic's first spooky set, and Ulgrotha was the first spooky plane but none the less this was a fun list on a very cool and spooky plane
Agreed :P
Some of that art from The Dark is amazing, especially The Fallen.
I would argue The Dark was not intentionally spooky / the story doesn’t depict anything that we consider traditionally spooky. It’s mostly just the art direction that might make it seem so, but it’s more “post-apocalyptic” than anything.
@@lindsayssbm I mean the line between spooky and post apocalypse when dark magic wizardry is involved is kind of thin tbh, so I'd say it's a bit of both.
Magic art nowadays is much more uniform. You rarely get weird drawing techniques like in older sets.
Nizzahon's Halloween series is another reason why October is awesome
The filter lands are one of my favorite dual lands. It does everything you want a dual land to do without being "strictly better" than a normal land.
Yawgmoth’s back is sore from carrying Twilight Mire to the finish…
I kid the land! It’s fantastic, and it actually makes the mana base of the deck so much more flexible and consistent. Yawgmoth has been my favorite deck in modern for some time, and I’m glad to see Mire at number one. Great video, as always!
Edit: Nizza, it looks like another account is trying to spam in your name.
Twilight Mire has seen a massive resurgence because of the BG Yawgmoth deck, that deck has tons of spells in it that are either double or even triple Black or Green in there cost and the mire really enables that deck by pseudo letting your basics tap for the other color.
I still think those dual filter lands from the morningtide eventide sets are very underrated. I always use them in Commander. Also I love the art on them.
they are not :D There has been over 10 years of player experience now, if they are not optimal, the players know by now.
Unfortunately, Commander utility does not necessarily translate to "competitive" and vice versa. Cards that are "good" in commander aren't always good in "competitive" formats, and cards that are good in "competitive" formats aren't always good in Commander. Nizzahon uses competitive format data for these lists, so Commander utility doesn't really come into play when evaluating cards for his "Top 10 Best" lists.
I love every card from Lorwyn-Shadowmoor. Such an underrated world.
This was one of my favorite planes, and one of the stories that I read the most of in the MTG universe. I love both the sides of it, but it's sad that it is highly unlikely that we will ever see a return to it
Personally fter what they did with Kamigawa, as good as it was to play, I'd rather just have lorywnn be a fond memory. There's no guarantee it even comes back recognizable.
@@trevorr994 Eh it wasn’t like Kamigawa was completely unrecognizable. The traditional half of the set (mostly green and white) evoked much of the original. I thought it was brilliant and would personally love similar for Lorwyn (which was my first foray into Magic)
Flickerwisp belongs to an interesting club of cards that did not see top 8 play in standard and block but did in a eternal format. Very interesting.
Sounds like an interesting idea for a top 10!
@@arbit4468 yeah! Cards that did not find a home till they entered an eternal format. Proof that cards are stronger or weaker depending on the meta surrounding them.

Lorwyn/Shadowmor is my all-time favorite plane! I just love the art direction for it
Yes! I love Lorwyn-Shadowmoor! I get why we won't be going back there, but I'd love to see another similarly-themed plane.
Shenanigans, Ulgrotha the plane of Homelands was the first spooky plane
There is no homelands and ulgrotha. I refuse to acknowledge their presence
@@orangeyellow9695 tbh fuck Homelands, but I would love to return to Ulgrotha and see whether Sengir fully conquered the plane or not. It might be hard to return to though, first because I can't think of a way to weave it into the "planeswalkers visit a plane cause they need sth from it" type of storyline Wizards sadly seems to usezand then there's also the fact Innistrad turned out to be a much better gothic horror plane (though we did get a bit different type of horror everytime we return to Innistrad, so maybe Ulgrotha might be a return to the OG gothic?).
@@sallomon2357 innistrad is homelands done right.
But vampire and werewolves theme is hackneyed. My favourite is still shadowmoor.
It's about time to return to Ulgrotha, Homelands is bad in the mechanics aspects, but the plane is nice. Innistrad is ruined anyway.
Spooky top 10 idea: with the fairly recent release of Dominaria United, a spooky top 10 exploring the spookiest Phyrexian cards would be interesting. A difficult list to be sure, seeing as how many Phyrexian cards there are these days, but it could be quite interesting and a fun way to showcase some of the spooky and disturbing art present on many Phyrexian cards.
The intro alone is just worth the view and the like
The intro animation is great. Very well done!
I have to say, I love your Hallowe'en intro.
I really want wizards to build spirit of destiny more, in like a way that focuses a bit more on the addition of creature types. Maybe a set where there's a ton of creatures that start with 1 or 2 types but can have more added(maybe with some more payoff too)
I like how you can make the creature a changeling to cheat level ups. It might make a whole new archetype if it becomes a cycle
Yeah, it's a very cool design worth exploring more (even if it can have some minor memory issues that might get annoying if everything on the board is a variant of this). If they share a lot of creature types it would be interesting to see support cards which grant those types to creatures (in addition to more generally useful effects, obviously), so you wouldn't turn on the stat increases but would open up later "level up" options earlier.
Definitely seems like an idea that's probably most likely to see justice in a custom set though, I can't imagine WotC would want to lean so far into such a dense mechanic.
Lorwyn was just before I got into Magic but I love it. Especially the elves, best elves ever were and everything hybrid mana. The Lieges are so cool, I try to jam them in every EDH deck
Stillmoom Cavalier, Figure of Destiny and Flickerwisp are some of my favorite creatures, Lorwyn/Shadowmoor is such an underrated and amazing block.
Love the animation at the beginning
Sweet, I just decided to update and play a Nightsky Mimic deck for Pauper. Deck based on Eventide (and Return to Ravnica) cards. I'll probably get my ass kicked though by meta decks. Not a fan of netdecking but I just had to make this deck, it's so good flavor-wise and the mechanic is great. Metagame decks are relentless but it would be so good to reach a top3 spot with this deck, just once.
Doesn't Slippery Bogle see tons of pauper play?
Pauper and Modern too.
Just to say "The Dark" was the first
Spooky planes !! Amazing spooky artwork in every color
i adore the spooky birds in the background ^^
Shadowmoor/Eventide is my 3rd fav block next to Alara and Time Spiral
Good taste.
Cascade Bluffs is really spooky in Modern. Not because it’s competitive in Modern, but because if you say the word “Cascade” your opponent is likely to tremble in fear of whatever nonsense you’re about to do.
This is the first set i started playing. I was 11 years old
Love the intro
Actually surprised slippery boggle is so far down the list
I'm picturing someone sacrificing the Glen Elendra Archmage and having Vorinclex in play, and then being really disappointed.
Nizza, why does Twilight Mire see so much more play than the other lands?
and what of poor fire-lit thicket!
@@alaraplatt8104 I'm guessing you meant Rugged Prairie (Fire-lit Thicket was in Shadowmoor). I think RW decks tend to go aggro, and therefore usually don't want a land that can't tap for colored mana on its own as it's a liability on turn one, especially when low to the ground aggro decks are also more likely to run a lower land count than other decks.
I'm surprised bogle doesn't have any points in pauper
Do you tabulate all this data by hand, or is there some database that makes it easy for you? Either way, quite impressive and much appreciated. Thank you.
Hallowed Burial is a HOUSE in my white decks, nobody expects it.
This is the time of the year we have the Halloween intro, but then the government cames and take it
Eventide deserves a lot more credit in general
How many points did the RW filter land have?
Raven's Crime still sees play in Legacy though. Loam/Pox like decks.
Nizzahon have you done a top 10 sack outlet/aristocrats? Cant find such a video
5:50 why would you not put a link to the bagel deck? I want to see that I don’t have a whole find it.
I love scarecrows
Spice8Rack is going to be happy about this one.
I would've loved to discover a teacher of mine did this on the side. So about that 78%. I'll play you best 2 out of 3 for the last 1.5%
Nizzahon is my favorite magic channel. But that redsox hat!!! Go Yankees!!! Srry buddy!!🤗🤗🤗
Couldn't Bogles get points because of Pauper? I believe Pauper was included in past lists as point bonuses.
How many points does Rugged Prairie have?
WHOOOOOOWWWW GO SOX!
I'm really confused
I have barely heard of Eventide honestly. I didn't even know it was a part of Lorwyn block until just 5 seconds ago. I guess it was just one of those sets that slipped through the cracks of my brain and was forgotten, probably in no part due to being in that weird middleground between when I started getting into Magic and playing, and the early sets which are interesting for historical value. But one thing I will *never* forget is my eternal desire for "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)"!
Mid 2000s the sets had much smaller print runs. Alot of these smaller sets can easily fly under the radar.
Now hang on a sec, FOUR of the Eventide filter lands? Where's the last of the cycle? I didn't see Rugged Praire and I don't think you mentioned it at all. Is it just significantly unplayed compared to the rest?
Yes, it doesn't have enough points.
Ee-ventide or Eh-ventide? I've always said the latter.
bogles only has 21 points? tf?
Yep. People are always surprised by that, but only seeing play in a single format and in one very specific deck is not a recipe for lots of poitns.
I got 2 boxes of Shadowmoor and 1 box of Eventide.
Love the intro
