Thank you all for watching this and bringing up tons of good points and information in the comments that I left out/hadn't considered. It's interesting that you did not mention Japan's commitment to the defense of Taiwan and their participation in the Quad. They are usually discounted, but their presence in or near the Yellow Sea would require China to maintain some PLA force in the North, limited what can be devoted to Taiwan. In addition, India's membership in this pretty much assures that the moment China engages Taiwan their oil is cut off, meaning that the attack would have to be lightning fast. It's not just the US that China needs to worry about, in other words, and that is significant.

Taiwan is a lot more prepared than Ukraine for war. Their doctrine is based on the all but guaranteed intervention of the US. Slow any invasion down to a couple of days so the Pacific Fleet can get involved. At that point, short of going nuclear, China will lose the invasion. Nukes have problems of their own though, likely destroying the delicate equipment in the fabs via electromagnetic forces. It would defeat the purpose of invading by destroying Taiwan's semiconductor industry.

Generally speaking, there will be no war in Taiwan.
Taiwanese people do not really want to break away from China. They prefer to stay between the United States and China and reap benefits from both sides. That's what they've always done, and they're very smart people. The quarrels will be loud, but the risk of war is very small.
The United States is escalating tensions across the Taiwan Strait in an attempt to trigger a local war and force international investors, such as BASF, to leave their safe haven in China and return to their destiny, the United States.
China, on the other hand, said that it would either not go to war or go to WW3 if it wanted to. This prevents the United States from achieving its strategic goals.
So you can see that politicians in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan are acting very aggressively and doing everything they can to annoy China. On the one hand, they can show off in front of their American dad; on the other hand, they know very well that China will not go to war with them.

All political comments regarding the world and the US are all misleading in this Channel. China will never invade any country or place by force unless threatened by the US or other country’s military.
(To ALL viewers of this channel, if you want to learn what is really going on with the US imperialism now in the world, go to YT channels such as The New Atlas and Pascal Coppens. You should never believe all information on the Internet or news media without getting the other side of the story, especially involving world politics.)
It is the US who is constantly trying to steal resources and technology from other countries and trying to invade and take over Taiwan from China.
Taiwan is part of China, regardless whether it is poor or rich, it will be reunited with mainland China sometime in the future. It is the US who keeps interfering China's internal business with Taiwan and trying to push Taiwan's current gov't to declare independence, trying to make Taiwan become another victim like Ukraine for US benefits.
China will never take back Taiwan by force unless Taiwan declares independence. It is the US who wants China to "invade" Taiwan so that it can get the rest of the world to go against China. All these talks about China invading Taiwan are US's anti-China propaganda.
The US has tons of military bases surrounding China, why? If you believe the US propaganda regarding China, Russia and Communism, then you are just being misled by the US gov't. It is all about US Imperialism in wanting to control all countries and resources on our planet, under the cover of “democracy”. Any country dare to say NO will get bombs from the US.

I live in arizona, and the TSMC plant here had TONS of bipartisan support. Arizona is investing in becoming a tech corridor, with Intel, Apple, Microsoft, Honeywell, Raytheon, and tons of other tech companies ramping up investments. The only issue is that these fabs/server warehouses uses water to cool the technology. Really interesting debates going on pertaining to all the tech investment, and what strain tech invesent has on our other resources.

Just in case you aren't from the SW USA, the biggest issue most people have is the Colorado River is at historic lows, we get most (if not all) of our water from this river and share its supply with Colorado, Nevada and some others. In Arizona we grow a lot of water intensive commodity crops (like cotton) and we are seeing huge tech fans like intels and things like Googles cloud server data base that will/does use water (I think it's called swamp cooling). Not an expert :) just a resident, and it's been reported on/discussed a lot more now that the river produces less water

@@Ryfael my guess is security and stability and local government incentives. Arizona does not have any natural disasters. No earthquakes, no hurricanes. Just very hot summers. It is inland but close enough to Mexico and California for trade and transport.
Regarding water, the AZ governor claims they have the second best water management system in the world, second only to Israel. Israel has a big tech sector and a big Intel plant and that consumes a lot of water too.
The AZ Intel fabs recycles 80% of their water usage and it is assumed TSMC will be doing the same.

      Don't be too impressed.
Actually, this video inflated and exaggerated Taiwan's and TSMC's importance in particular.
TSMC uses ASML machines to make their most advanced chips.
ASML machines are assembled in Europe, the Netherlands (Dutch).
The technology and the most critical components of the ASML machines come from California, USA.
Even if China were able to invade Taiwan and capture TSMC intact, before Taiwanese sabotage or destroyed by American cruise missiles in the middle of the night, it wouldn't be long (2 or 3 years) before those ASML machines would become obsolete.
Capturing TSMC and the current ASML machines would not make China the most technologically advanced country in the world, at least, not for long.
      That's a bunch of BS.
But most likely, TSMC factories would be destroyed, one way or another, before the Chinese communists ever produced a single chip from them.

      That's not a fact. It's a lie.
The fact is, Taiwan is an island off the coast of mainland China.
The UN does not treat Taiwan as a Chinese province, because China has no control over Taiwan, and cannot speak for Taiwan. Taiwan does not take orders from China. So any country that wants to communicate with Taiwan has to do so directly with the Taiwanese government. The CCP has no authority in Taiwan. The 2 governments are completely separate from each other. Everyone knows that.
Sanctions and trade deals with China do not apply to Taiwan. Trade deals with Taiwan are separate and different from what we have with China. The US sells weapons to Taiwan, but not to China. They are both treated as different countries. That's a fact.
The Republic of China refers to China from 1912 - 1949, before it was stolen by the CCP. The Republic of China does not recognize the CCP or the People's Republic of China as the legitimate government of China.
You could also say that Taiwan is China, but it is a part of China that is not under the rule of, or governed by the CCP or the People's Republic of China. Taiwan China is a different country governed by a democratic government, not communist, called the Republic of China. It is a separate country, not a province of mainland China, ruled by the communists. Taiwan China is not governed by the CCP or PRC.
What do you mean the US is "holding Taiwan hostage against China"?

Carbon atoms alone can not do it. So you need graphene structure... Which.. is large... The smallest "transistor" like structure is larger then what is achievable with silicon using XUV. And there is one extra issue with graphene... You can't work it well with XUV litography.
Carbon bonds are broken easily by short wavelengths. Destroying the structure.
And frankly unless you start building CPUs atom by atom there is not much tech avaible how to work carbon.
In this particular regard silicon is much superior material. Just for ease of manufacturing.

    (TLDR at the bottom)
One massive item that was missed in this wonderful video (which, in fairness to the creator, only happened a day before releasing the video) is the modernization levels of global militaries allied to the US that would be called to arms in defense of Taiwan; not just at the highest level of military-technical abilities, but what the mean technical level throughout a military is. For example, Russian military forces can field a modern infantryman, equipped with a modern rifle, optic, night vision equipment, modern body armor, and modern communication equipment. However most of the troops seen in Ukraine are seen with only parts of this list, often missing modern communication equipment, night vision equipment, optics, and so on. Thus, while Russia's peak technical ability is on par with a modern military, its mean technical ability is below average. But China has been seen fielding an ever-increasingly modern military at a higher mean technical level than Russian forces (though still below US standards), so how does this affect them? Well, it doesn't; not directly at least. Where it does affect china is in the arsenals of national armories of nations that the US might call upon as allies should they invade Taiwan, much like was seen in operation desert storm.
In recent years, criticism was leveled at many nato nations for having poorly equipped and steadily outdating militaries, however with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, many nations have been sending heavy equipment to the aid of Ukraine, with a large focus on their oldest units that are still in operation first. because of this, most European nations now have a gulf in their abilities as many of their own forces are now without equipment, mostly tanks, airplanes, artillery, and logistics. Modern equipment will need to be acquired by these nations, such as Poland, Germany, Romania, and the united kingdom, which will drastically improve their mean technical ability. Many US-allied nations have already started this process or accelerated an ongoing process, with Poland eying American f-16s or Germany green lighting f-35s.
The US military aid package of 33 billion dollars (slightly more than Australia, the 10th largest defense spender 2020 yearly defense budget) has a focus on providing the money necessary for any military who was impacted by the invasion to purchase new and modern equipment to replace anything that was sent to Ukraine. what this means for china is that if the US forms an international coalition as they did with Kuwait, the militaries they can provide will be far better equipped than they were a few months ago.
TLDR: the Russian invasion of Ukraine has sparked many US allies to modernize their militaries and the US is providing them the money needed to do so, if china invades twain and the US assembles an international coalition as they did in Kuwait, it will be far more potent than it would be currently.

    Key facts:
    1. Taiwan's DPP government does not intend to 'declare independence'. That would mean declaring independence from themselves, the Republic of China which would make no meaningful difference to the lives of Taiwanese residents.
    2. Taiwan's population overwhelmingly opposes becoming a subject of Beijing. That's what happens when Beijing's policy is intimidation, and breaking promises which leads into:
    3. Taiwan's population chose the DPP government in a democratic election and by extension, closer ties to the west. Their interest is in maintaining the current status quo as an independent Republic of China without the Communist Party, and the west are the only ones who have an interest in helping them in that cause.
Anyone who is against war should also support maintaining that status quo. For one to say they're against war and then side with Beijing which has vowed to change said status quo without renouncing the use of military force to do so is a direct contradiction.

Been so long since this video posted and so much to learn. Cliff notes today are basically if the Mainland declared war on Taiwan, they have like a 40% chance of being successful despite directing all of their military might at that and even if they did they would lose all of their customers, half of their fuel resources and most importantly their best and brightest in a country that already faces a drastic population fall problem to more free and democratic counties. They might take the island but the cozy creepy people in charge of China (one of the most beautiful and wonderful places on Earth btw) could not replicate within themselves what they have achieved and grown from an abundance of youth and an open welcomed attitude towards the rest of the world.

You forgot about ASML. Which makes the machines that actually make the chips. And ASML is Dutch. If you think TSMC dominates fabs with its near monopoly, ASML has a complete 100% monopoly on the machines necessary to make the newest chips, EUV lithography machines. And they provide a lot of support to keep them running. It's not at all certain that China would be able to operate those machines if they captured them without ASMLs support, which they would not have. ASMLs machines are probably the most complicated things on the planet after particle accelerators and fusion reactors.

If TSMC were at Beijing's hands, what if helping China, even a little bit through some shady deals, on advanced lithography systems, turns out to be more profitable and stops China's ASML equivalent from ever catching up (still seems unlikely however)? I love your videos and they're always well presented! However, there's a massive flaw in presenting capturing Taiwan and their semiconductor fabrication facilities (fabs) as cutting the West off from the semiconductor fabrication technology and not crippling China itself.
Over 98.5% of the chip lithography machines which TSMC uses are designed and produced by companies friendly to the West:
ASML (Dutch) - 28% market share
Nikon (Japanese) - 11% market share
Ushio (Japanese) - 11% market share
SUSS MicroTech (German) - 6% market share
EVG (Austrian) - 5% market share
Only ASML produces Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography (EUV) machines to make 5 nm chipsets and eventually 3 & 2 nm chipsets. ASML produces 50 EUV machines/year and has sold about 125 of these machines. Assuming TSMC had all these machines, it would take ASML about 125 ÷ 50 = 2.25 years to resupply the West with TSMC current capabilities. This ignores that West friendly Samsung (South Korean) also produces 5 nm chipset with ASML machines. Adjusting to account that TSMC and Samsung have 52% and 18% market share resepectively, it would take ASML (52-18)/52 × 2.25 = 1.5 years to resupply the West with TSMC's current capabilities.
On top of this, if China captured Taiwan today without somehow loosing TSMC's fabs and engineers, China would be cut off from all Western friendly fabs and new lithography machines from these Western friendly companies. Thus in this most optimistic scenario for China, China would be capped at TSMC's current production levels while the West surpasses them in 1.5 years. Most likely TSMC would cripple their fabs and evacuate their engineers. Instead, China would be capped at their tiny domestic capability, crippling them severely, while the West makes due with Samsung's capability.

Intel would also undoubtedly greatly accelerate their external fabbing plans if TSMC were to fall.
TSMC without ASML is basically a sinking ship. Literally no one else has the ability to supply the EUV machines needed for current and coming cutting edge technologies. China has already spent billions trying and failing.

    • @Quickshot0
      @Quickshot0 Před 2 lety +34

Pretty much as said, though of course China would not be able to get various parts to fix any EUV machines that developed a problem either, as complicated machines always do. So at the very best it would be a degrading capability, while the developed democracies would with an interruption of some years start getting back on pushing the technology forward.
Of course now considering what the war in Ukraine has shown, China could probably count on being cut off as much from the worlds markets as the other developed nations could bear, which would probably expose them to many vulnerabilities in specialist parts no one else but one or two particular nations made, various raw goods, etc. Which would likely cripple their economy or its ability in future to develop.
Over all as such an invasion of Taiwan might as such lead to the downfall of China's chances of developing further. Basically a terrible blunder, as the value of Taiwan in prestige and strategic positioning, will never make up for the costs that much of the developed world would inflict upon an expansionistic imperial power.

    • @dylanswift5185

China would also be cut off from the most important chip designers as well. People seem to forget just how incredibly difficult it is to design or even copy successful chips. The chips made for x86 machines or even the ARM designs require significant amounts of R&D to squeeze out maximum performance. The video also ignores the extreme importance of analog chip manufacturing which is dominated by companies like Texas Instruments and Analog Devices.

    Military invasion has several drawbacks:
    - the last time the PRC went to war was when they fought the Vietnamese in 1979, which is around 43 years ago
    - if they invade, several manufacturing facilities and infrastructure can be destroyed, which will make it nothing more than a useless island till it can all be fixed.
    - PRC has no experience in amphibious landings (which is something that they will need to do since it's an island)
    - invading Taiwan could cause the PRC's neighbors to feel threatened and start to militarize
It's much easier to have their politicians on their payroll and keep Taiwan as a puppet state. The Chinese government is not like the Russian government. They will play the waiting game, bide their time, they know much better ways than warfare to get what they want. Just ask the corrupt politicians we have at Washington D.C. accepting their bribes.

First off, this is based off of rational reasoning, and we all know people act rationally until they don't.
But most importantly, the one thing the CCP is afraid of is the Mandate of Heaven and regime change. Now, China is not in a good position, with demographics alone predicted to half the Chinese population by 2050, and as the CCP fails to provide to the people, the powder keg of revolution grows larger. A good win will surely boost those approval ratings, right?
Trying to predict what will happen in the future is betting against God's hand Himself, but as demographics threatens China's economy and military and the grounds for the Mandate of Heaven begins to set, a Chinese invasion may become possible.

I think you missed the part where the video (and many other sources) state that this has to happen within the decade. They can't bide their time because it's simply not an option.
Also, I get what you're implying about soft power, but believe me when I tell you that that won't work the way it used to anymore. The pandemic was a real turning point in CCP PR, since then nobody trusts them anymore as the veil has largely been torn off.

The political comments regarding mainland China, Taiwan Province of China and the US are completely misleading. All political comments regarding the world and the US are all misleading in this Channel. China will never invade any country or place by force unless threatened by the US military.
(To ALL viewers of this channel, if you want to learn what is really going on with the US imperialism now in the world, go to YT channels such as The New Atlas and Pascal Copens.)
It is US who is constantly trying to steal resources and technology from other countries and trying to invade and take over Taiwan from China.
Taiwan is part of China, regardless whether it is poor or rich, it will be reunited with mainland China. It is the US who keeps interfering China's internal business with Taiwan and trying to push Taiwan's current gov't to declare independent, trying to make Taiwan to become another victim like Ukraine for US benefits.
The US has tons of military bases surrounding China, why? If you believe the US propaganda regarding China, Russia and Communism, then you are just being misled by the US gov't. It is all about US Imperialism in wanting to control all countries and resources on our planet. Any country dare to say NO will get bombs from the US.
This channel is full of false information and is probably funded by US gov't in spreading its propaganda.
