    Thank you so much for an excellent instruction video. I stupidly left a new Generac 5500 sit with stabilized gas in it for about 4 years. I tried to remember to start it up about every 4 to 6 months, and of course it slowly became harder to start, then it would only start if the choke was off, and then only if I used ether starting fluid. Finally, as I prepared for hurricane Debby, it would only run for about 10 seconds (on the ether fumes). So, I drained out the old dark yellow gas from the gas tank, lines, filter and carburetor, and flushed out everything with fresh stabilized gas. Pulled the spark plug, changed the oil, and still would not start. You noticed that I kept avoiding pulling off the carburetor. Then I found your video. Well done. What you managed to do was to give me confidence that I could break down and clean this carburetor. As soon as I opened it up the problem was obvious, there was corrosion on the main jet, and the end of the main bolt. The main jet was totally frozen in place. Poured some Kroil penetrating oil on top of the main jet, and finally after about 2 hours, it loosened up. I soaked the main jet, atomizer, and the main bolt in Kroil overnight, and then cleaned everything with Seafoam. I then put it back together and reinstalled it (with confidence). Started on the first pull! I let it run for a half hour under load, and I am ready for the hurricane season, thanks to you.

    I’m not a big fan of Generac’s engines even though they run ok. But at least they put a drain plug in the bowls. The later B&S OHV motors apparently can’t be bothered to do that are on the 5kw generators. Personally I’m a Honda guy.

    • @TheLawnmowerLady
      @TheLawnmowerLady  Před 3 lety +3

      I hear ya on the Honda engines Mr Chatrkat! Superior in many ways, despite the plethora of gaskets. LOL. However if you're talking about the Honda inverter generators, they are a fiddly mess to work on in such tight quarters.

      @@TheLawnmowerLady I agree on all points. I like the GX and GV engines especially the Japan built models. I love the small generators and inverters too. Thank you dear lady. I was in the dark how am I going to dismantle and clean my carb. It is the only item left to check. My machine is new only used once to try it out. Stored for quite long and then after trying it out ...nothing. I wonder whether the manufacturers do this on purpose cos even the ignition went caput. There is nothing there to seize or clog and yet no spark. Now it's the carb turn. Hope it works.

    This is exactly what I was looking for. This will be my first mechanical fix… ever! My gp5500 won’t start and I’ve tried everything my limited skills know. Checked the carburetor plug, the fuel was drizzling out steady, the oil level was good, and tried to run it and it started for a quick second then stopped. Did this several times with carb fuel to help kick start it but it dies quickly after starting. So, I think I will try following your video since I just found it and it’s so greatly detailed. However, I do not have a parts cleaner. Do you recommend just using carb cleaner and a soft brush to clean it? Thanks

    • @TheLawnmowerLady

      I would use brake cleaner, less harsh on the plastic bits. Just make sure when you spray into one orifice, it comes out cleanly from another.

    I have a Generac RS7000E. Just followed your video and cleaned the carburetor. (Great video by the way. VERY helpful!) It still won’t start. I followed another video suggestion and unplugged the low oil shutoff sensor to see if it was defective and preventing it from starting but that didn’t help either. Any suggestions?

    • @TheLawnmowerLady
      @TheLawnmowerLady  Před 3 měsíci +1

      A couple of thinks to try... squirt a little fuel directly into the carb throat. If it sputters and coughs a bit, you've confirmed spark and compression. The problem is fuel flow. Start with the basics: spark, fuel, and air. Thanks for watching.

    Great video. Just learned I didnt take the atomizer out and clean. Guess thats why it still wont start after cleaning everything else. The carb was so gummed up that the needle wouldnt move, it was stuck. Back to the drawing board and hope it starts this time after cleaning everything. The anti backfire solenoid was unhooked when i got the Generator to work on. Does it need to be hooked up for it to run?

    • @TheLawnmowerLady
      @TheLawnmowerLady  Před 6 měsíci

      Glad it helped, I appreciate you watching. It will run just fine without the solenoid. Just be careful not to shut down the generator with a load. That back fire could cause a voltage spike on the generator side.

      Took the Carb Back off and got it ALL cleaned up and everything looks good now. Unfortunately my o ring on the bowl nut is shot so gotta wait till tomorrow to find another one before reassembly. Thanks for the information on the solenoid. The solenoid actually works when i hook a 9 volt battery to it and its cleaned up good. But I have no idea where it hooks up at, it was disconnected when I got the Generator to work on for my daughter.

    • @TheLawnmowerLady
      @TheLawnmowerLady  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for watching. Same disassembly, and use carb spray or brake cleaner (wear your safety glasses) and spray into every orifice you can see, and observe the fluid escaping through another orifice. Brake cleaner is less harsh on plastic components, and carb spray is downright corrosive on rubber parts (needle seats, valve needle tips, etc.) Very thin wires (think bread ties, or guitar strings) are good for cleaning the brass jets. Tip cleaners that MIG welders use are good too, but be careful of enlarging the holes in soft brass.

If you can't find the parts diagram for your unit at partstree or another larger parts house, you might have better luck just replacing the carburetor altogether. I wish I could be more helpful.
