    Your description of the center draft lamp made me check the 3 lamps I have, and one of them is center draft. Have had it for decoration and only used it once in 20 years. I am now using the plain oil lamps for the first time ever and love the light. Will look at my center draft lamp tomorrow and see if I can get it burning for Christmas. That's great you loan your lamps to the church.

    What beautiful old oil lamps. I have many ( and I use mine every night) some are antiques. For those who do use oil lamps and would be a light source of power was lost be sure you stock up on lamp oil. In my area the oil is getting hard to find.

    That wick and burner system is very close to my Perfection oil heater. Miles Stair's Wick Shop, and W.T Kirkman might be good sources for wicks, parts, and glass.

    You are so right about the Aladdin lamps, they are really bright but you better not leave the room after you light one, you’ll have a smokey mess.

    I'm telling you I'm convinced I'm being spied upon by Google or AI has gotten so good it can predict .y behavior because I just received a Nagatauk lamp from UPS today and decided to polish it up a bit while watching UTube and wouldn't ya know it ,you appear with 3 of them and it's more interesting because you haven't been putting up too many videos lately but today yep you do and it's about Nagatauk lamps. I think you did it last year maybe it's a tradition now? Anyway Merry Christmas , everyone and have a great New Year...it's going to be interesting to say the least.

      Well, I borrow them to the neighborhood church for their Christmas service so I had them all out to tune them up. Good thing I did, I found my billfold that had been missing for a couple months, a cat had slipped in once and knocked it off a shelf and it must have fallen into a box of lamp spare parts, a Christmas Miracle.

    the closest thing to a modern center draft lamp is a Kero-Sun heater. its larger and functions as a heater but gives off a decent amount of light. but generally its a center draft lamp. has safety features like tipover shutoff.

    • @logcabinlooms
      @logcabinlooms  Před 7 měsíci

      I have a Perfection heater to, and they work on the same principle. Perfection also made a heater which used a glass cylinder instead of the metal drum, so you got both heat, and light. One of those would be cool to find, but I suspect many of those didn't survive. The metal ones seem to have been pretty popular, they turn up at farm auctions fairly often. They also work very well not only for heating, but also handy for cooking, they make a lot of coffee very quickly.

    These and Aladdin lamps are not foolproof. Start with low flame on both till the lamp heats up, 10 to 15 minutes, then turn up flame. DO NOT light and walk off, or flame will be boiling out the top!! Both give superior light. The Aladdin burns cleaner, the center draft gives lots of light, but burns a lot more fuel. The center draft doesn't use a fragile mantle.

    I've been looking at them since your last video about them. Where can you get the round wicks? THANKS

    • @logcabinlooms
      @logcabinlooms  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Available on eBay, even Lehman's carries them. I just ordered extras from them, 5 for $40, but singles are available also. The wicks last a long time if you don't run them out of fuel, but they do need to be trimmed now and then if the flame becomes uneven.

    How long do the wicks last with daily use?

    • @logcabinlooms
      @logcabinlooms  Před 7 měsíci +3

      Years, as long as you don't burn them dry. If they are low on fuel the wick will char. You do need to trim them once in a while, but you take off only a little to even them up if the flame becomes uneven.

    Do they throw a lot of heat?

    • @logcabinlooms
      @logcabinlooms  Před 7 měsíci +8

      Yes, can be a bit noticeable in summer, but then the days are long and I don't need them as much. In the short days of winter, the heat is welcome. The design is very similar to the old Perfection kerosene heaters, so yes, they generate heat.

    Were you able to do anything with the one I sent yoi?

    • @logcabinlooms
      @logcabinlooms  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Yep, I was running it earlier tonight. It has a small problem with the wick adjustment gears, which are different from the Naugatuck, more of a rack and pinion design, and tends to slip. I just set it to the right height, and don't adjust it. I may try tightening up the mechanism a bit with a pliers, or build up the gear and file new teeth. It burns fine, and no leaks, which is what matters.

    Do have to be concerned with carbon monoxide?

    • @logcabinlooms
      @logcabinlooms  Před 7 měsíci +2

      They burn very hot, so very clean. Bound to be some monoxide, but nothing to be concerned about. No more than running a burner on a gas range. They give off no smell that is noticeable.

    What size is the wick you use?

    • @logcabinlooms
      @logcabinlooms  Před 7 měsíci

      I think all the Center Draft lamps use the same size, 1 3/8 inside diameter, but to sure measure the outside diameter of the draft tube. The wick is actually made of two flat wicks stitched together, and should measure 2 inches when laid flat, 6 inches long.
