  • Like Lennon and McCartney or Simon and Garfunkel, the difficult relationship between Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth led to some incredible music. The difference between the two was essentially that Van Halen wanted to make rock music, while Roth wanted to be a rock star. Roth was the quintessential rock and roll front man, but his relationship with the band finally hit its breaking point in the mid-1980s, and he quit. From the early formation of the band to their various reunions over the years, let’s take a look at the truth about David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen’s relationship.

At their last show at the Hollywood Bowl, Roth went over to Eddie, put his arm around him and they spoke to each other off mic. Roth then said, "The best years of my life; the high points of all my life - onstage with you, homeboy. You too, Al."

@@donnswaby369 Eddie's "love" of Sammy (which was mainly evident during the time of 5150, and was already showing signs of fading by OU812) is more of what I would categorize as an emotional reaction to a new musical partner who wasn't named Dave. His affection for and praise of Sammy, as much as anything else, was an expression of the freedom Ed felt because he no longer had to answer to Dave. If they had gone with a different singer, like Patty Smyth or Daryl Hall, it probably would have been a similar story. Ed's affection for Sammy was likely further fueled when it became clear that the band would continue to be successful with Sammy taking over as front man (something there'd been real doubt about at the time). Aside from his actual family (Al, Wolf, etc.), and Val perhaps, Eddie seemed like the type of guy who developed a huge amount affection for people early in relationships but, over time, would start to find fault, mistrust, resent, or just grow bored with them. Case in point: with Gary, early on, Ed was calling him his soulmate and stuff life that; but a year and a half later, Gary was out and, by Gary's own account, Eddie never contacted him again. If you want to call that a kind of love, I guess you can; but it certainly wasn't a lasting one.

Van Halen was Eddie and Dave. I ask all VH fans one question, why is it that every album with Dave there's not a bad song? There's no other band's catalog I can listen to every song from every album and enjoy except DLR Van Halen Albums. Roth's lyric and melody had heavy influence on most songs i'm sure. Dave and Eddie needed each other to achieve what America's greatest band of all time did. Both have admitted friction between them helped in writing the finished product. He also mentioned when he was doing the Vegas concerts he had been talking to the brothers and had they had given him the OK and was using Van Halen gear and crew. “I don’t know that Eddie is ever really going to rally for the rigors of the road again. His career would either have found him as a great guitar player in a short lived and little known band - or - as a great guitar player in a more or less solo route, such as say - Jeff Beck, Al DiMeola, etc...
The pairing of Ed and Dave was where the magic happened.

Halen with Roth is good. Very memorable and amazing music they created and covered. Halen with Hagar was also good and it actually was more polished and rounded out. The original line up was down and dirty and Eddie played and blew the guitar world away. The second line up was older, wiser and refined and Hagar's voice fit just a good as Roth's and Eddie still played and still blew the guitar world away. Sure there are friend feuds. I have them with my friends all the time. I am sure that both Roth and Hagar had a ball with Eddie and they are lucky guys for having been so close to the greatest guitarist of our time. I can tell you one thing that is for sure. He (Eddie) had IMPACT. I have never seen youtube blown up this way. Every other video is Eddie and that is GREAT. Look at DLR now singing vs Sammy singing.. when you can’t jump and be the showman... one has longevity the other doesn’t. We were lucky to witness both. If DLR was the main frontman.. we wouldn’t have had 20 yrs.... Look at him in Vegas. He doesn’t have pipes, never did. He had looks, jumps and enthusiasm that comes w youth. I was a huge fan of young VH. I wasn’t sure I’d like SH. But he did well, music changed. Their competition didn’t carry into the 90’s. The change they made gave them another decade for us to enjoy. LISTEN UP! I have been a die-hard Van Halen fan for almost 40 years. DO NOT believe the NONSENSE in this video. Saying that they worked with David Lee Roth for 10 years ONLY because David Lee Roth came from money and had a PA system is COMPLETE NONSENSE. A GREAT MUSICIAN like Eddie Van Halen, who KNEW how to not only play fast, but write songs with big riffs and catchy hooks, play amazing nuanced rhythm guitar, write solos that were little songs within songs and not just ridiculous wank-off fests, is also absolutely and definitely musically knowledgeable and instinctive enough to KNOW and value David Lee Roth's cool rock and roll voice and stage performance and Michael Anthony's absolutely amazing background harmonizing vocals. Eddie and Alex had EVERY OPPORTUNITY when they were coming into MONEY, and getting interest from Warner Brothers, to dump David Lee Roth and hire Sammy Hagar or another singer.
    THEY FREELY CHOSE NOT TO!!!
THEY KNEW THE CHEMISTRY WAS THERE WITH DLR AND MA!!!

That it took Eddie 16 years to let go of whatever hurt he felt Sammy had done to him proves this: the bigger the love, the bigger the sense of betrayal and disappointment. Eddie and Sammy were musical soul mates and best friends (Dave NEVER had that relationship with Eddie. Ever. Because of Roth, Eddie wanted to quit the band and join Kiss) who'd co-created some of the best music of their careers in the span of those ten years (1986 -1996 and I am saying this as a VH who has happily supported all incarnations of the band), with Eddie's songwriting abilities at their absolute peak. “I’m gonna abandon my spirit to them which is exactly what I attempt to do. You work yourself up into that state and you fall into the supplication of the demon gods.” - David Lee Roth (Rock, April 1984, page 30)
“I started playing guitar, drinking, and smoking at the age of twelve.” - Edward Van Halen
Where did Eddie get his inspirations for songs and the tones he came up with for them? Well, here is an excerpt from a January 1997 Guitar World interview Eddie connected. It was in an article titled UNCHAINED MELODIES by Steven Rosen. These are actual quotes by Eddie Van Halen given: “It’s a wicked feeling when a complete piece of music comes to you. But it’s not me, I’m just a vehicle and I really believe that.” “I ended up writing five songs that day including the music for Me Wise Magic. It blew my mind. I just didn’t want to believe I could do it without drinking.” “Then she had me do some yoga and meditation and some chanting. Next she had me close my eyes and imagine the room that you go to after you’ve had a six-pack of beer. Really try and feel that place. The therapist continued and said, Look you’ve been chosen to do this. All you are doing by drinking is blocking it. It’s a lot easier for them to send it when you are clear.
    I wonder who “them” is…..Demons……..
Also, Valerie Bertenelli is wicked as well. Valerie is an icon of show business and why is that? Yes she is pretty and she seems to have done a great job raising her son Wolfgang Van Halen. But she has been known to attend the Kabbalah Center and she wears a red string on her wrist which signifies allegiance to the devil. Here is an excerpt from her book Losing It: And Gaining My Life Back One Pound At A Time by Valerie Bertinelli on pages 157-158: Thankfully, I was able to stay at home for my next project, Murder of Innocence. Although shot locally, it took me as far away from myself as I’d ever been. The character I played, Laurie Wade, was a newlywed whose childhood traumas trigger a series of psychotic breaks that lead her to shoot at schoolchildren. She then commits suicide. Though the project let me work with director Tom McLoughlin again, I didn’t for one minute like climbing into the skin of this woman. I had the feeling that the ghost of Laurie Wade didn’t like it either. One day Tom and I were walking down a tree-lined street in an residential neighborhood, going over a scene in which Laurie is in a manic state when suddenly we heard an ear-splitting squawk that I swear to God sounded like someone saying “Get off!” Both of us looked up and saw two giant ravens sailing toward each other, like two planes on a collision course. We didn’t see them hit, but suddenly one bird fell from the sky hitting tree branches on its way down and landing with a thud at my feet. I looked down and saw blood dripping from its mouth. I looked at Tom and said, “I don’t want to be this woman anymore.” As the weeks progressed I broke down into hives and rashes. They had dermatologists visit the set. Nothing worked. Something about that part got under my skin and triggered a reaction. That’s why I couldn’t wait for the movie to end. I wanted Laurie to leave me alone. Now, isn’t that sick? Hollywood is sick! Valerie married Eddie on 4/11/81. 111 days later MTV debuts. All the rock and roll people who loved Eddie and all the TV fans who loved Valerie “came together” on April 11th when they married. Just in time for MTV which debuted a few months later. Music and Television merges and Eddie and Valerie

It ain't Van Halen without Roth
It ain't Van Halen without Eddie
Those two were like galaxies colliding. You witnessed something unique and not something that could be duplicated.
