Van Halen is one of the most iconic rock bands in history, known for their blistering guitar riffs, bombastic drumming, and larger-than-life stage presence. But their history is also marked by a revolving door of lead singers, with David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar taking turns in the spotlight.
The history of Van Halen's vocalists is a complex one, marked by both triumphs and conflicts. Roth was the original lead singer, fronting the band from their inception in 1974 until 1985. During his tenure, the band released six albums and became one of the biggest rock acts in the world. But Roth's outsized personality and ego led to tension within the band, ultimately resulting in his departure.
Enter Sammy Hagar, who joined the band in 1985 and quickly became a fan favorite. With Hagar at the helm, Van Halen released four hit albums, including 5150, which became their first-ever Billboard number one. But even with Hagar in the band, tensions remained, particularly between him and Roth. Their feud has become a legend, with each singer taking shots at the other in interviews and on stage.
Hagar has been particularly vocal about his issues with Roth, both professionally and personally. In a recent podcast interview, he broke his silence on the feud, detailing his frustrations with Roth's antics and ego. According to Hagar, Roth was difficult to work with and often put his interests above the band. This led to tension between the two singers, which eventually boiled over into a bitter feud.
Despite the conflict, Van Halen continued to release hit albums and sell out arenas with Hagar at the helm. But even he wasn't immune to the revolving door of lead singers, as he left the band twice, with both departures coming with their own set of issues.
Ultimately, the legacy of Van Halen's vocalists is a mixed one, marked by both triumph and conflict. But no matter who was at the helm, the band always managed to put on an unforgettable show, thrilling audiences with their iconic sound and unforgettable stage presence. And even with the passing of Eddie Van Halen, his son Wolfgang continues to carry on his legacy with his one-man band, Mammoth WVH.
As the world continues to grapple with the loss of Eddie Van Halen, it's worth taking a moment to reflect on the band's incredible legacy, marked by their electrifying music and larger-than-life personalities. And as we look to the future, we can only hope that the spirit of Van Halen lives on, inspiring new generations of musicians and fans alike.

And he did leave . Hagar is still lying saying he was fired . His 🐂💩 started when he started bossing Ed around . And Ray Daniels saw it and asked about it . Contrary to Captain Candyass Ray Daniels is the reason for the split . Go look for yourself on a compilation of Van Halen clips I'm sure is from Howard Stern on CZcams . In one clip (circa Carnal Knowledge I'm guessing) Hagar says " This is MY band" and the next clip he says " Lead singer of the band leader of the band , what's the difference?" . He made a choice of doing the greatest hits album or QUIT . He QUIT . Again he's pulling this 🐂💩 saying he was fired . Now after all his book promotion he's lying again saying he was fired . And after all this 🐂💩 saying the Halen Bros was only in the business for the money LOOK WHO'S DOING A RIP-OFF ELEVATOR MUSIC VERSION CASH-GRAB TRIBUTE TO EDDIE . Sam is a Candyass two faced lying crybaby 😭

This is my thoughts. In the early years, the only VH albums I cared about was the debut album and 1984. I played most of the songs on my drums and had a blast. All the other albums had great songs, but I only liked the ones played on the radio. I saw them in 1984 in San Francisco, music was out of tune and DLR couldn't sing as good as the studio albums sounded. I didn't think it was all that great.
Along comes Sammy. I fell in love with his voice and the range he had on vocals. I loved, and still love 5150, OU812, and For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. I wasn't a fan of Balance. It didn't seem like a VH band. I had hours of fun drumming to Sammy and VH.
With all that said, DLR was a good singer but not a fan. I think Sammy had the better voice and and when they performed, and I saw them 4 times, the music was spot on and it looked like they were having a blast. I will always be a Sammy Hagar fan of Van Halen.

Ed was the architect (and the most demanding), Alex the momentum on drums, Dave the live ringleader and Mike...Mike? The Secret Weapon. Without him (despite his lack of songwriting input) was like a loud siren that got your attention. I liken his place in VH history to when Ringo joined the Beatles. It totally changed the dynamic of the band. Sad that MA was so unappreciated by 2004.

Drummers have such a different role than bass players in rock bands. Drums are the most consequential instrument of a rock band. There are great bands with poor singers and guitarists, but there’s never been a great band with a poor drummer. Ringo was monumental for the Beatles success. Unfortunately the truth is bass players are the easiest to replace. It still changes the sound but it can be done easier than drums or guitar. Generally speaking.

They bookended their career with Roth. The original Van Halen had guts and drive. Ed tuning down some mixed with Roth’s vocals did it for me. It was raw. When they returned to Roth for Me Wise Magic I was beside myself. I really thought the band I saw live in 1984 at age 12 was back. It’s too bad Roth didn’t try to concentrate more on his vocals live. It’s too bad egos didn’t get in the way.
The era with Sammy was too bright and tinny for me. It was largely due to Sammy’s vocal range and the vibe in the band at that time. Poundcake and Seventh Seal had some punch to them but nothing like I’m the One, Jamie’s Cryin, Mean Street, Sinner’s Swing, Unchained, Runnin with the Devil, Hang ‘em High, Dirty Movies, Somebody Get Me a Doctor, Girl Gone Bad, or House of Pain.
Again, they bookended their career with Roth which, for me, speaks to them squandering many years. It’s a shame.

You're completely right. It could have been worse, the Gary Cherone experiment, but Gary sings great for Extreme. They tried for the college crowd with Sammy and it worked a bit. The DLR years were the best of all, but I don't think he gave a shit too much later on. In some ways it was wasted talent. We just need to be happy with what we got out of them, remember, they always got our money! And they were spot on the first few years!

    • @bayesian2007
      @bayesian2007 Před rokem +1

@@joereilly8925 Ed and Al got into moneymaking mode. Their greatest years had them hungry making great, driving, hard rock. Sammy seems like an okay guy. His stage antics were embarrassing. He simply tried too hard. He’s not a bad boy like Roth. His lyrics were/are a joke. Ed and Al shouldn’t have gone and trashed him and poor Michael who did nothing to no one. Ed then tried to pawn Cherone and the songs from that era too hard.
In some ways I wish they never went back to Roth. Ed said in 1996 that touring with Roth would be a disaster. It somehow wasn’t at the end. Ed knew he blew it. Al did too. Roth knew it in 1996 onstage at MTV awards. They squandered an amazing lineup and since Ed’s death it’s the only Van Halen I listen to.

I think most people would agree that if you're only counting range and quality of lead singer capabilities, Sammy far outweighs the Diamond. But you can't just only count that. Dave added a flare in the early years that was so flamboyant that it simply wouldn't work later on or now. But, it sure did then. I found early VH a guitar explosion band with some great tunes but Dave's "singing" was about 50% of the time "speaking" the lyrics instead of singing them. Let's face it, those first 3 albums were all Eddie and his world-topping, amazing talent on the guitar. But, Sammy has always been my rock hero, in whatever incarnation he's playing in. Imagine my elation when I found out who was going to replace DD. It kinda saddens me sometimes when Sammy gets braggy with his commentary, but then again he has the tools to back it up and in general, he's a very giving human being. (Humans Being?). The commentary in the video about how Sammy compared Roth's solo career to his own ... saying that he made so much more money... is somewhat taken out of context. Again, he does however have the tools to back it up. Sammy's solo career spans farrrr beyond Dave's but he shouldn't have compared them at all - everyone knows it. I bet Sammy would now agree to that, too! These people have to have giant egos in order to succeed at all in the world of Rock especially. And overall, Sammy is one of the very best. The Sammy VH albums were far better except for VH1 and for me, it's 85% Sammy and 15% Diamond Dave.

Most bands peak at their debut or very close to it. The breakout years are the best because the band, the material, the signature sound are usually quite unique, hence the breakthrough.
It's nearly impossible to top that, so much of it is emotional attachment of the fan base to the original band and lineup within the band. Not one of Sammy's VH songs are on my VH hit list. I do love BTW Sammy's singing and with the band Chickenfoot it's great band altogether.

This is a tough question to answer my favorite song. VH 1 and Fair Warning are my two favorite albums. There was Unchained, Mean Street, One Foot Out the Door, On Fire, Atomic Punk, but each album had great songs. 1984 had the underrated Girl Gone Bad and Drop Dead Legs. VH 2 had DOA, Light Up the Sky, Women and Children had Somebody Get Me a Doctor, And the Cradle Will Rock, Diver Down had Little Guitars. So many songs to choose. They're all classics to me!

Imo, Van Halen's work with Sammy Hagar made for the best rock albums of the 90's outside of grunge and alt rock. - masterpieces including For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, Balance and even though OU812 and 5150 didn't match their '91 effort, the first 2 albums sounded better to me than anything DLR did with the band, ( with due respect to DLR's over the top star persona, fitness displays and showmanship ). Van Hagar's music brought me the courage to take guitar lessons at age 16 and buy my first electric. My own modest band and touring experience for some years after, helped with anxiety issues and got me through college and bill payments. VH Mark II 's gift to the world was abundant, and opened the gates for quieter, ambiverted types to believe they could create music with relevance. Without them, 80's rock stars and stage theatrics wouldn't have left a timely niche for musicians like Dean De Leo, Kim Thayil, Marty Friedman, Dave Matthews, Reb Beach, Mike McCready and similar relatively unpretentious performers. R.I.P. EVH.

The question specifically is favorite “singer”?
The answer, in my opinion, is they had two singers and two badass frontmen…DLR & Sammy Hagar are badass frontmen, and Gary and Sammy are excellent singers…so to be clear as he TOPS BOTH CATEGORIES, Sammy Hagar is clearly my choice, plus he added to the dimensionality of VH, and the band musically was better…more hits…that translates to more money. The Roth era was great, the Hagar era was EPIC, and the Cherone album is best off forgotten.

Dave was by far the best vocalist VH ever had. While Sammy's voice was technically better (had more range and control), Dave's had better tone and a whole lot more power. The punch and swagger in Dave's voice (heard in the studio recordings and early live shows) stood side by side with Eddie's guitar work to define the greatness of the mighty Van Halen. Just as Eddie reinvented what it meant to play rock guitar; Dave shattered the old ideas of what it meant to front a rock band. He was the standard all later lead singers tried to match. They styled their hair to resemble his. They jumped and kicked on stage, as he did. And they whooped and hollered trying to duplicate his inimitable exuberance. Dave changed the course of rock history. What did Sammy do, other than give us a bunch of syrupy soft rock, of which we already had a much superior supply from the likes of Journey, Foreigner, and Rick Springfield? VH's original producer even said Van Halen never would have made it without Dave, and to know the truth of that, all you have to do is look back at how Montrose failed. Long live DLR!
