  • When I sent a picture of the eggless gluten free jowar cake to Paro, she was all praise for the chocolate cake. She even ordered me to bake with sorghum flour and banana in airfryer when she comes to meet me after Corona Virus. My darling Paro knows how to differentiate between a healthy cake recipe and an unhealthy one. When bhua is with Paro, I make sure my cute little niece eats only What is jowar in English?
    Sorghum flour
How long does jowar flour last?
I keep all my flours and powders in the refrigerator so they last longer and do not go bad easily
How do you bake with sorghum flour?
Well, baking with jowar atta is easy in airfryer, cooker, oven or otg. You can make a jowar banana cake like I have done or make guilt-free homemade jowar biscuits that are colored with saffron and sweetened with jaggery. The jowar cake and cookies and even a simple jowar banana bread can be your go-to baked goodies for parties and get-togethers once you get a hang of baking with sorghum flour.
    How do you eat jowar?
Well, you can make jowar roti, jowar cake in cooker , jowar banana cake in airfryer, sorghum cake with dates, sorghum flour cake with jaggery. I mean to say there are a plethora of jowar flour recipes that are gluten-free and guilt-free as well.
    Q. Is this jowar cake soft or hard as the batter looks like dough?
Well, the jowar banana bread cake is soft, moist, and flavorful. Bananas help bind this millet cakes recipe along with flaxmeal, which is my go-to omega 3 (I am a vegetarian and need omega 3 from healthy fats).
    Q. I always feel baking with jowar flour is not easy as it does not bind easily. What do you say?
Well, I can bake with sorghum flour or any other gluten-free flour hassle free. All you need to know is how certain flours behave. Just train your hands and mind and you do not need anything else to make baking with sorghum or ragi or any gluten-free flour easy.
. Do you have an easy recipe of homemade jowar biscuits ?
One of my favorite sorghum cookie recipes is the one that uses saffron for flavor and color. It has been a huge hit with my followers as well. Do try out that recipe.
Another one is the 3-ingredient jowar biscuits recipe with jaggery in airfryer. You will become crazy for sorghum once you try out this healthy biscuits recipe for a gluten intolerant loved one.
    Q. I was looking for an easy sorghum cake recipe (gluten free). Is this a gluten-free cake recipe?
Absolutely. The Indian airfryer cake recipe is gluten free, sugar free (no added sugar), and dairy free. That means it is a perfect treat for those with celiac disease, lactose intolerance, and gluten sensitivity. However, this is not a diabetes-friendly cake, since it uses dates as sweetener. Dates are packed with fiber, so one slice should be enough for a diabetic who takes insulin shots.
    Q. Can I bake millet cakes recipe in cooker without oven?
Absolutely. You can follow this cooker cake recipe to bake a gluten-free sorghum flour cake in cooker.
    Sorghum benefits for diabetes
Sorghum is rich in phytochemicals, antioxidants, phytosterols, phenolic acids, and tannins. All these phytochemicals are believed to reduce the risk of certain diseases in humans. When you make jowar flour a part of your diet, this reduces the risk of cancer due to the high concentration of phytochemicals.
Since sorghum contains tannins, it is believed to reduce caloric availability, which further lowers the risk of weight gain and obesity. Besides, the Sorghum benefits for heart are immense. The phytochemicals in sorghum play a heart-protective role, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.
    sorghum nutrition
Sorghum is a nutrient-dense grain, which is categorized as a millet. A rich source of vitamins and minerals, jowar flour benefits skin, thanks to its B vitamins. Besides, it is packed with iron, zinc, magnesium, and potassium, which make it a highly nutritional flour to include in diet. Not only this, jowar is a blend of tanins, phytochemicals, fiber, amino acids, and antioxidants,, which make it a complete food. Jowar benefits for skin, weight management, heart health, diabetes are immense.
    sorghum for weight loss
Since jowar reduces caloric availability, it lowers the risk of weight mismanagement and obesity. Therefore, benefits of jowar in weight loss cannot be denied.
    sorghum in hindi-jowar
    how to eat sorghum
You can make jowar roti or bake with sorghum flour. I have shared many jowar flour recipes here.
What does Sorghum do to the body?
Jowar aids in digestion as it is packed with fiber and nutrients.
    Is sorghum for diabetes good?
Jowar is rich in phytochemicals that are known to have blood glucose-lowering properties. Besides, they help reduce cholesterol. Research finds that sorghum extracts have hypoglycemic activity in which control sugar levels in blood.

Tried this twice and the cake came out great on both occasions! I added 13 kimia dates and 3 yelakki bananas instead of the said 10 dates and 2 bananas (As i wanted the cake sweeter). The outcome was a dense, well formed and (still) mildly sweet cake! Thanks for the recipe! Will be my go to from now!

Sourdough is surely the best way to eat bread. In fact, if you eat a lot of bread, then you must start with sourdough. It is a healthier alternative to commercial yeast and helps in better absorption. Well, in the US, I know the climate is different ( being a geography student). Yes, you have done it right to shift the starter glass in the oven.. however, we also want to ensure that the natural yeast are able to grow..the oven environment might not be right..better to keep the oven door slightly open so fresh air can circulate and bring healthy flora and bacteria along. I hope that makes sense. Let me know if there's any confusion. In the US, the starter might take longer.

.. i heard from some random video that it is a young starter and we can make bread with it which will also be less sour.. and go on developing the starter ahead.
.. though i will follow your method, can't risk all the efforts and grocery😀

@@hrehaancuber8544 well, you can make flatbread or kulcha with it only if it smells good. Ideally starters smell bad in the initial stages because of the bad bacteria. The smell gets better with time..say 5th or 6th day onward. I use the discard only when it smells good. Otherwise it goes to the compost.

Well, cakes might sag in the middle if the batter is overbeaten or the amount of baking soda is more or if you open the oven or cooker again and again to see if the cake is done... regarding, substitute to banana, you may add thick curd instead if you are okay with dairy

    • @healthfoodfitnessRavneetBhalla
      @healthfoodfitnessRavneetBhalla  Před 2 lety

It could be due to an old stock of flour. Gluten-free flours tend to get bitter after some time, especially if they are store-bought because there is an anti nutrient cover that is bitter. There is a wrong and right way to make flours. Else, you may refrigerate the cake overnight and the bitterness should subside

    • @healthfoodfitnessRavneetBhalla
      @healthfoodfitnessRavneetBhalla  Před 2 lety

I am sorry to hear that your jowar cake didn't turn out as expected. Well, first, please check the expiry date of your baking powder soda. The reason could be expired raising agents. This is the result in many cases. Alternatively, all flour brands behave differently. So you might need to add more flour and just fold it into the wet ingredients. Overmixing the batter might result in a dense chewy bake. You want to make sure it is a thick batter..more like a loose dough. If you don't like nana flavor, try taking fresh banana instead of a very ripe one. The more ripe the banana, the more the nana flavor because all its sugars get concentrated upon heating. An overly ripe banana already becomes sweeter with an intense nana flavor. Try increasing the amount of flaxmeal. I hope that helps.

The recipe sounded so great because you said your cake turned out extra delicious. But add extra virgin olive was was a very wrong tip. My cake didn't taste good because of this. Other people advice to put virgin coconut oil or butter. Virgin Olive oil spoilt the taste, plus it didn't bake well inspite of 34-40 mins in the oven. I kept it for further 10 mins but still it was uncooked from the centre and it also broke open when I tried to cut and lift it from the baking dish.

Well, sorry that you had such bad experience. But my family loved the jowar cake as is. In fact, several people tried the cake and gave positive feedback here as well as in facebook. Oil may be replaced with whatever you use. I prefer evoo always for my bakes. Baking time varies from one machine to another. Even it varies from airfryer to airfryer. You know your machine better. It may take longer or bake in shorter time in your appliance. The cake is fragile because it is a Gluten-Free cake dear. no gluten cakes tend to dry out and break apart. If you can keep it in the fridge and cut it the next day, you ll get perfectly clean slices. The flavor of the jowar cake is perfect for my family and friends. I hope you get it better next time.
