Man, I've been working on my own TCG for over two years now (I've been playing MTG for 25 years now), and I've been creatively stuck. This video really got my juices flowing again. Thanks for your insight, you have a good head for card games!
I'm not sure if you're in a situation where it is needed, but I have done consulting for multiple indie card games if you ever are in need of another set of eyes! Glad I could help get you going again!
I make a new tcg every few months. It never gets past early designs, i just find it fun to come up with new mechanics that I havent seen before. I was more of a fan of digital card games like Culdcept and Monster Rancher Battle where you dont have to worry about how you'll disrupt updates fairly among the different deck ideas you've created, something that seems to hurt games like vanguard. But I just started designing one I am to see to completion. To play with my kids one day. Not to ever actually release. Thanks for the video.
Suggestion to remove the need for spells: give each card 3 abilities. 1 effect when/while on the field, 1 effect when used as a resource, and 1 discard effect. The discard effect could be actived from the hand or field, so long as the cost requirements are met. This way every card has theoretical functionality at any point in the game and creates interesting scenarios of players sacrificing potential mana or creatures in exchange for more instant abilities
@@sawderf741 well you can reinforce by using your opponents fallen troops so its like chess but you get a "hand" but the way you explained that reminded me of that
Hell yeah dude, good luck working on it! If you ever want another set of eyes on it for feedback I offer consultation to any aspiring card game dev! :)
You’ve made duel masters lol You should check out more card games imo especially Pokémon duel masters maybe wixoss/vanguard and a couple more. I’m designing my own card game too (: good vid
I think it should go the other way. Big creatures should have mediocre land abilities, while weak creatures have strong land abilities. that would encourage a blend between a lot of small creatures and a few big creatures.
the idea really made me think about how most people don't get very attached to instants or spells like usually your favorite card is a monster especially your boss monster stuff like that. also doesn't the idea of some of your cards being better lands basically make it so you are mainly going to cast them as lands especially if they provide a repeated effect? well any shway great video very interesting and helpful. thats a sub from me
I haven't, and mainly put the project on hold for the past around year. However, i have recently come back to the idea and have made a few major adjustments to the original plan. I'm glad you asked because sometime this weekend/early next week I am going to have an updated video coming out actually, and if motivation remains I want to try to build the channel all around card games and card game design with much more frequent uploads and discussions
@@philnork That's awesome. I was curious, did you check out digimon 2020? I'm not a fan of the meta being quantity or quality of monsters.. from what I have seen of it... but the resource management is interesting with the data, making sure not to give your opponent too much to work with. I hit the bell, curious where this goes.
@@braydenb1581 I haven't checked out digimon 2020, but it might be something to give a look especially if they have unordinary resource management systems
Love hearing peoples ideas. I got a game coming out soon. I got s lot of unique ideas My advice is to let the ideas come to you. Even if you need to take a break. Don't force yourself to be passionate about your game. Breaks are ok.

how to make a good card game :
step one : copy duel masters as much as possible.
step two : you are welcome.

i am working on a cardgame based around spells xD Nice video!
Duel masters has a great mana and life system.
Yeah was gonna say, the mana system is played off discarded cards right? Like they have their own values for what they give you mana-wise
@@ButtersDClown well actually every card in duel masters is also a land. If you get stuck with a bad card just play it as a land.
Interesting. Have you tried playing shogi?
@@ButtersDClown The Board game? I mostly understand it. I just forget how the pieces move and promote most of the time.

Hey dude , I've been designing my own card game for around 2 months now and this was really helpful advice
instead of spells you might want traps. That way the opponent gets the chance to interact with it or even counter it.
have you checked out flesh and blood?
Great video man! I really love your ideas!
Easy to learn hard to master is what u want to strive for
I just found this and realized the card game I am making is incredibly similar.
Hell yeah dude, good luck working on it!
