      It's because Kamil Orman-Janowski (the god behind the PoE1 music) is working on the PoE2 music for some time now, that's why we got Michael James Collier in PoE1, who is making the music for it atm. They searched for someone who can make music like Kamil and Michael was the one who got closest when I remember right.
      Collier makes awesome music too, his themes are Lake of Kalandra, Sanctum, Crucible and Affliction. Personally the entire PoE1 soundtrack is the best ever made, listen to "The Climb" or the boss music, old/new Lioneye's Watch, Izaro's theme, Breach Lord's theme etc. OOOH

    I think I understand why big studios often struggle to produce good games. It may have something to do with identifying with the project. Nobody cares enough because nobody really have big influence.
    It seems that a smaller team can produce a good result and be proud of it more likely

    • @eom1682
      @eom1682 Před 6 měsíci +24

      Most of the time it boild down to the directing staff and creative team. Big studios have big investors behind them giving htem guidelines and only allowing things that are confirmed to give big returns. Its why every triple AAA interface seems to be a carbon copy of eachother and other stuff like that. This causes the directing staff to grow detached from the game and see it just as another day another dollar, don't care if people like it or not. And if someone of the lower echelons, like say the modelling staff or the programing staff don't care about the game thats perfectly fine, it almost will not affect the final result anyway, they are in a sense just your everyday construction workers, they are of course the ones building the stuff but they cannot change the final result much, it is the architect and engineers wich actually have a direct impact in the final result. And smaller teams generally tend to have creative and directing staff that is way more involved with the project because it being successful actually has a direct impact on their reputation and job security unlike big triple AAA directors who will always have another job avaliable.

If you look at the retail WoW boss fights they just look gamey: circles and swirleys on the ground, numbers covering the entire screen all the horrendeously looking addons and literal air horns notifying of stages. I'm pretty sure you can remove circles and numbers if you want to, although it's going to make it quite hard, not knowing where exaclty attack hits can lead to your death, same with understanding when boss phases change, etc. You don't need thousands of addons that clutter 3/4 of your screen and millions of notifications about every little detail, these are for minmaxing shower hating grinders that treat anything other than most hardest late game raids as garbage not worth paying attention to. Your comment sounds like you want to make some superficial arguments to elevate poe and bring down wow, but they shouldn't be compared in the first place. Maybe something like black desert or even lost ark would be more reasonable, or i don't know, DIABLO/Other arpg? A wild thought i know.

      @@kickrobotsintheballs5840 I don't seek to bring down WoW, simply looking at PoE made me realize why I don't want to play retail. Classic WoW is a different story: I am playing SoD atm and I love it! But you can also play this game without any addons.
      In general, it's a personal preference thing. If you like numbers it's perfectly fine! It's just a shame to me that what Blizzard made out of vanilla WoW which I loved turned out so unappealing that I quit playing forever after WoLK came out. Simply watching videos from the current retail makes me not want to even try.
      In general, numbers are not a big thing in itself: when I played Diablo 4 (for a bit, lost interest fast) I simply turned them off. Especially in a (mostly) single player games it is not important as long as there is an option.

    Nice vid, I agree as well on the point of not removing complexity (mantaining the skill ceiling) but enhancing the ways new players interact to the game (lowering skill floor). It can be a complex game that explains its mechanics really well.

    • @mityakiselev
      @mityakiselev Před 6 měsíci +2

      Depth != complexity IMHO. A game can be incredibly deep for an experienced player to sink hours into getting the hang of strategy and all the smol mechanics, but start out relatively simple for a more casual player not to be thrown off. Complexity just for complexity's sake is really apparent, you can tell if the devs actually spent a lot of time designing a cool game. It's the developer's job to manage the dankness curve in such a way that it's fairly straight forward at first glance, but as you play through the game and get more or less used to your controls and skills and combos, you progressively get more and more options to customize and improve your experience. If you have complicated mechanics, the last two things you could possibly want to do is 0) not show or explain anything at all so that most players don't even realize you can do that, it can be a feature but usually it signifies bad user experience design; and 1) pour so much information on the player that they simply block it out and stick to the simple stuff, which most game devs tend to do. The complicated stuff should be somewhere in the middle, explained as intuitively as possible, preferably without too much exposition text. The curve should actually go (on the scale of 1-100) from somewhere in the single digits at level 1 to somewhere in the upper percentile closer to level 100, and the shape and slope of the curve should be really well-balanced for the game to really feel like a cool experience. I would say they have to sprinkle in new mechanics and layers of complexity one or two at a time for like the first 20-30 hours at least, so that players have enough experience with what you introduced before for every new thingy. I trust these devs to do the right thing and create a great game, hopefully they don't disappoint.

      @@timperman9883 I would honestly argue chess isn't as much of a skill game as it is a pattern recognition game. I watched quite a few grandmasters explain their thought process when solving puzzles, and usually it's not really strategy, it's more like "does this very specific pattern I memorized apply to this situation?", which is way less fun. The skill floor is actually quite high since you have to understand how the pieces work and what they're able to do, if you move them randomly you're going to get a scholar's mate faster than you could say "rook". This doesn't really apply to video games since it's a completely different thing. I thought more along the lines of "WASD to move, these buttons to attack" at first => skill management, combos, builds, crafting, and stuff like that later on.

    • @BattlewarPenguin
      @BattlewarPenguin Před 6 měsíci

      @@mityakiselev the best progression system I've encountered is Doom Eternal.
      The game throws a lot at you, however you develop skills naturally as your weapons arsenal grows, with meaningful upgrades, and more.
      Complexity is non linear, it is exponential, if you want to add something complex to an already complex system it can change everything. For that given a certain mechanic a certain use should be implemented without it being impossible to live without that mechanic, and encouraging funness.
      I agree organic growth is important and videogames are the medium in which people can interact with stuff rather than being tell stuff. I hope as well that the devs will provide the best experience they can, as they seem to be working passionly about it.

Also any time I try to get someone to play with me they see the skill tree and all the systems and I can see their brain melt 😂. A few examples:
      1) you can get different skill tree branches for weapon swaps and even character shapes (bear counts as a separate swap btw) for a wider build so that you don't have to put all your points into lycanthropy and go around as a bear forever (ahem ahem Diablo 2) and still get good DPS;
      2) your skills combine with each other so you'll have to use them in sequences to achieve a result: if you bear stomp near a volcano as a druid, the volcano spits out more lava from the vibration, which makes a lot of sense but is insanely cool, the mercenary can combine different attack patterns (sniper crossbow, assault, shotgun) using different ammo (incendiary, freezing, oil) for different effects, which all synergize with each other, so you can freeze an enemy and break through its armour or try to shatter it completely into shards, and so on;
      3) all skills are now socket chains where you put gems directly into the skill to create a custom OP synergy-based ability, so basically custom 6-links for every skill;
      and so on and so on, I won't bore you with too much detail, you can check out other reactions, my point is the devs are actually trying to create a cool game, which is a revolutionary concept nowadays

    I love POE-1 damage stack possiblities.
    I mean I have a marauder(Jaugger) whose heavy strike was only dealing 800 dmg and then I had multiple other skills I wasn't really utilizing.
    So I got regret orbs and respec my passives to give me more ailments chance(Bleed/ignite/chill) and got some auras, looked through items for boosted dmg, jewlery passives, curse damage %increase, golem minion with electrrical(complimented with shock% increase), support damage multis, secondary attack skill(Which with passives and supp give 80% bleed chance) and supported my main(Heavystrike) Skill with boosted damge to bleeding enemies + boosted dmg against aliments and now, after four hours of mathz I got the 800 dmg heavy strike to 3000 upfront dmg and 4.5k dmg after modifiers and if shock hits then it goes up to about 6k+.
    Went from fighting enemies, to feeling like N.A.T.O. would charge me with warcrimes. lol. I love it. and I'm not even past act 5.
    Oh, and thts not even touching on my 4k armor which when aura boosted goes up to 9k with capped out ele res, 250 hp regen, 200 leech on hit, endurance charge boosts.
    I think the most fun I'm having is in the fact that at any moment, I can go back to my hideout, switch out a few things, and be able to use a completely different playstyle.
    There is a time penalty for doing so (having to farm for nessecary items, jewels, gems, armor, etc) But then again it makes it feel earned, it isnt just a "Hey ima paly like this for five minutes then switch" type of feel.
    I also love the mini tetris game with the inventory lol.

      after thinking about whether I agree with you or not, I realized that late game you shouldn't be even picking up that many items. Once you get the upgrades you need you going to be picking up only currency anyway. Limited space got me to eventually stop picking up shit from the floor. I know I did, I picked up something I thought I needed but I actually didn't once I exited the map. Also, I think making the game too convenient might not be the way to go, now I know this sounds like a quality-of-life improvement, but it might be a developer's choice after all...

    Fast pace end game where your positioning is crucial to not getting hit and die, WASD keys move would be so good, finally can move and attack at same time rather than slow laggy movement by mouse click when you need mouse aim to also attack.

    you can mouse over a spell and see how much damage you do. Also, the character screen shows you. But having damage numbers is something I would take or not, I really dont care, other good arpgs have the numbers like Grim Dawn etc. and poe does not and both are good games. So yea, if they do numbers I know they would look good because it is POE style if they dont I dont care

    The most important thing for me is the endgame, and it wouldn't be fun if they just copy-pasted the same mapping system to PoE2 imo. It would be too stale. The Nexus from Synthesis League was more dynamic, as you could place your maps in a grid to progress in a 3-dimensional space. There, you're not grinding the same map 24/7 to get the best rewards, you're getting the maps as tiles to path through. That was peak endgame for me, and nothing since has compared.

      The idea is you can just play POE1 and naturally transition to POE2, and the story is connected somehow.

    You know what would attract a lot of people while still keeping a game complicated? Is that for every class, you have 3 archetypes you can choose and you can auto level them with a button to create a viable but standard build. Experts can skip that and do everything manually, but new players can learn to build archetypes like that while still beeing able to reach the endgame.

  • @xXGe0rgEXx
    @xXGe0rgEXx Před 6 měsíci +3

    They said they won't add a target dummy to PoE because people would stay in hideout smacking the dummy trying to get bigger numbers instead of playing the game and trying things out there. Then they would be misled into thinking their build was good because of the target dummy but there might be a lot of situational stuff they didn't consider.
    We have the same issue with PoB where people crank up unrealistic settings to get a bigger DPS number but in reality you're never going to have all these buffs up at one time during a boss encounter. Maybe for 1s but it's not realistic sustained DPS.

    Target dummy would be great. Combat (death) log would be better. An accurate ‘dps’ number hovering over your skill would be great too. The game knows your actual damage, why the hell does your shown dps number ignore half the modifiers and give bad numbers?
