    I wanted to ask: how do I about actually testing the (nine pin) 175 relay to verify if it’s functioning correctly , how would I go about doing so with a voltage meter?
    Do I put power to pins 2 and 6, ground to pins 7 and 1 and test pin 8? My apologies for not understanding how I am to actually test the relay. Obviously I am no electrician. I look forward to your response.

    Great video, but a lot is over my head - on the electrical part. My son has a 2006 Jetta Gas Automatic that periodically will not start. We have a new battery, new OEM starter, Alternator with a new regulator and brushes, a new ignition relay (the on on the steering column). When it does not start, we do hear a click, that I am assuming is the starter solenoid engaging, but the starter will not crank. So from what I can gather it is an electrical (e.g. voltage) problem to the starter. You kind of addressed this early in the video, but how can I test to determine what to replace (I anticipate it is a bad wire). For example, if I use a volt meter and go from positive to negative on the battery it is OK to do that, but if I touch a positive to the frame that is grounded, is that OK or will that short the car? Any simple to explain tests would be fantastic. I have a meter, tools, etc. but I am really green when it comes to electrical. Thank you so much.

    My 2002 jetta started doing something similar, except if you held the key in the start position for 10 or 15 seconds it would crank over and start and it would be fine for the rest of the day. But if the car sits for more then an hour it goes back to me having to hold the key over in the start position before it cranks....Weird!

  • @JonALewis
    @JonALewis Před 2 lety

    Right after replacing the wiper motor switch, I now have a no crank situation on a 2000 VW Golf, manual transmission. I got the rear wiper to work and then buttoned it up only to have the car refuse to crank. I've narrowed it down to no voltage getting to the starter solenoid. When I bypass, putting voltage directly to the starter solenoid, the engine cranks just fine. I show no continuity between the starter solenoid wire at the solenoid and the relay PIN 87 with key turned on or off.. So while I do get 12 volts when I turn the key at terminal 30 it's apparently it's not getting where it needs to go to the solenoid. I also tried sending voltage down the terminal at 87 and still nothing which makes sense if there's no continuity there. Unless there's some other circuit anti-theft or the like which would confound these tests? Or maybe it's just old wiring or chewed through broken somewhere? Is the fix to find a place through the firewall to run a new wire?
