True Blood also used this piece of lore and I enjoyed that. Especially when people would have to say the line "I rescind my invitation" as angrily and dramatically as possible, and then the vampire would involuntarily run out of the house at Flash speed. Also, it's funny that they deliberately threw out other very common pieces of vampire lore - garlic doesn't affect them, crosses don't affect them, I think you can still see them in mirrors IIRC, etc. - yet kept THAT, of all things.

Julie Plec mistreated Kat Graham (Bonnie’s actress) and is part of the reason she was often written out of the show and never given a good opportunity to be happy. I was so young when I watched this show and I remember my sister was more into if so watched much longer than me and she was telling me the whole Bonnie's gay dad plot and I just responded "she's still alive?". I feel like that is one thing I will give vampire diaries credit for (even if they may have not meant to) they set Bonnie up as a character that is typically killed off quickly die and subverted that
i always thought of her as the kinda shadow main character. I liked Elena fine but Caroline was easily my favourite. Elena was a blank slate for the fans to project on but Caroline was the person who seemed to have the most actual story, development and progression.
Caroline is surprisingly pretty cool/interesting, I love her as a bubbly positive vampire it's fun

Absolutely underrated part of this comfort video is the VIDEO GAME SECTION. Everything about it sends me every time. Jenny calling it a “depression simulator” will never not kill me.

Holy shit. I have watched this video so many times that I read your comment in the voice of Stefan (the video game version) with the cadence and inflection used in the video game. They did Bonnie dirty. She could have been the best character - but they just made her a problem solver who’s always getting her heart broken.
Bonnie was the best character wdym?? The fact that she was so powerful and sacrificed her happiness and literal LIFE every time was so heartbreaking. Kat played her so well and her emotions were so raw.

They did almost every poc dirty, tyler technically isn't poc for some reason, but Michael Trevino was done dirty, same with Marcel in the originals and so on

I love how Jenny sets up the huge emotional and dramatic stakes of the moment near the end where Bonnie figures out how to end the spell and when Elena wakes up and sees her there and asks her how she did it, Bonnie just has this casual "It was super easy. Barely an inconvenience!" energy when answering her. Watching a Jenny Nicholson video is an unparalleled experience.

A better love story than Vampire Diaries.
The fact that they had a character with survivor’s guilt have their survivor’s guilt confirmed to be accurate, and they chose to basically kill themselves, is pretty incredible. Incredibly stupid and irresponsible.
Not too much unlike Miraculous Ladybug presenting a character who's set up to have an abusive father, where you'd predict the ultimate culmination of his arc would be to break away from familial abuse and heal and learn to live for himself, only for the show to turn around and say "actually he's not even a human, he's just a human-shaped homonculus and is physically unable to go against his 'father's' orders".
Or how 13 Reasons Why basically redeemed or narratively praised every single teen character that died throughout the series, thus communicating that dying or offing yourself in your teen years will only make everyone love you, which is, yknow, not a good thing for a show about a teen offing herself to do.
I don't know why some writers can't resist making the most irresponsible choices for their kid/teen audiences.

Lmao, like kind of a Taika Waititi comedy about immortal vampires with shit memory. They act like they're world-weary, wise and have seen everything first-hand but in fact every single smug recounting of historical & personal events are like wildly inaccurate. Show flashes back to the vamps in the 1700s or whatever then cuts to present day where they make the exact same mistakes over again bc none of em can retain a single life lesson over the centuries.

She leaves out the part where Bonnie is trapped alone in a prison world and eventually driven to suicide. The writers basically used her as a human punching bag.

Bonnie is the best and has it worst.....some screws up...Bonnie rescues them, suffers, gets nothing...(repeat as necessary)
But they always went running to her when things hit the fan. It was so crazy how when Elena lost her brother she was allowed to grieve and push it aside in such a horrible way doing bad things to people but when Bonnie lost her grams she had to help them out straight away and that happened anytime she was going through something.

I'm a black woman, was a teen watching vampire diaries and fell in love with show. Bonnie of course was my fave, and loved seeing someone like me as a strong witch. However, I did wonder why Bonnie and Damon never happened, actually wondered why Bonnie was either not on screen or every relationship she had was a failure or they died. Now that i'm older (still watching vampire diaries till this day) and I understood why and what happened to kat graham, really makes me sad. They didn't give her character what she deserved smh
She was such a hit and miss character, they could have done so so much with her and it always made be angry that every time they didn't know what to do they just killed her or some family of hers and sent her off screen

@Agent Bubble Part of it comes with learning how to discipline and be yourself w an adhd mind, in mind. It's easy for me to turn some boring tasks into a game or an opportunity to just hangout in my own head. I've also found that people find me kinda interesting, since I naturally have a different way of verbalizing thoughts. Obviously the other sides of those coins is that I can forget to self care when I'm toiling away, and people can also find me very intense. It's all about perspective. It's hard to view it positively all of the time tho 😕

Kat Graham (the actress for Bonnie) was the most talented actress and even musician of the entire cast and she herself expressed how incredibly disappointing and demeaning it felt to play a character who wasn’t even a priority, though she presented as a main character

I remember reading a series in middle school called Cirque Du Freak, and the author of that series tried super hard to make being a vampire seem bad, but the whole time reading that series I just really wanted to be a vampire, and wished it was me going through all these crazy adventures.

This video is a work of art, the recurring jokes never get old because Jenny has the BEST comedic timing. And I LOVE that she mentioned the on-the-nose music choices early on because now I'm noticing it in like EVERY scene she plays and it's hilarious
One of my all-time favorite rewatch videos, and I've never watched vampire diaries, I was more of a twilight kid haha
The structure of conflicts in this show are all basically: the villain threatens to cause trouble for the gang, the gang comes up with a plan but it doesn’t work, it looks really bad, and then Bonnie does a spell. Throw in some of Elena crying and Damon being sassy and that’s the show
I would love to see just once a vampire romance where the teenage main girl asks the vampire how long he's been 17 and he replies "30 years" and it gets awkward as she realizes she's just dating a young looking middle aged man.
