Review by www.thepalomino.com
10 years after its original release, this definitive book on skate shoes is back with a new updated edition with over 200 new pages. It's a beast by anyone's standards, by far the largest, exhaustive and thorough book there's ever been on the shelves in Palomino.
Put together by the Museum of Skateboard History, Jürgen Blümhein, Dirk Vogel and Cap10, Made For Skate starts at the very birth of skateboarding and ends right up to the present day, seen through the eyes of what we as skateboarders have chosen to protect our feet with. If someone made shoes to skate in, they're in here. Interviews with skaters and shoe designers alike, it's one of the most impressive books compiled about our culture you could wish for.
634 pages, hardcover, 9 1/4" x 11 3/4".

Skateboarding Is Not a Fashion: The Illustrated History of Skateboard Apparel
The way apparel has been worn and created by skateboarders over the past 50 years has had a tremendous impact on popular culture at large. In Skateboarding Is Not A Fashion, the authors have taken great effort to document all aspects of this aesthetic movement; from its roots in the 1950s as an offshoot of surfing culture, through the early 1980s when skateboarding "found itself" after a crucial underground period of soul searching and DIY expressions of individuality.
Early generations of surfers and skaters wore coastal lifestyle brands such as Jantzen, Hang Ten, Jams, Vans and Hobie. As the culture progressed and developed its own distinct identity, brands core to the scene such as Vans, Santa Cruz, Powell-Peralta, Sims, Alva, Jimmy'Z and many more jumped into the fray with their own apparel.
Nearly every area of garment design was touched by skate wear's aesthetic - influencing the design and fashion of innumerable media from printed T-shirts to board shorts and denim to track suits along the way. Telling the inside story of skate couture in the words of those who lived it, Skateboarding Is Not A Fashion features original commentary from designers, company founders, and pro skateboarders who have defined skateboarding's look for entire generations.
Skate personalities we meet include Stacy Peralta, Lance Mountain, Tony Alva, Brad Bowman, Steve Olson, Steve Caballero, Steve Van Doren, and many more. Skateboarding Is Not A Fashion even addresses the design influence of accessories and safety gear ranging from helmets to kneepads and gloves, not to mention accessories such as bags. Skateboarding's unique attitude and style have captured the imagination of millions over the decades--and Skateboarding Is Not A Fashion Vol 1. is the culture's magnum opus lookbook.

With Grosso gone, I applaud Bobby for nerding out of everything Skateboarding. Documenting this stuff will preserve all the distant memories of our culture. Keep it coming.
I was born in 96 and I loose my mind over shit like this. Down to the multiple factories and variants
Bobby is a really sick host, if that's even what he's doing here. Knowledgable, gets info out of people but doesn't intrude too much.
I love how true to skating Bobby has been his whole career, and even to this day
"For the Culture!"
I have a near mint pair of the Jason Lee's . best goodwill score ever
Jason Cabello wowwwwwwwwwww!!! I would have freaked out.
@@christophersawyer253 Oh, I definitely did
Bobby PLEASE do more tuff like this man. This ruled!
Ipath made some great shoes. Duffs made some great shoes as well. Those gum bottoms just did everything soooooo good.
TUME 1 I believe they were called “Grasshopper” as the model name. I had a black pair. I had skated with Matt Field back when he was on Supernaut skateboards. Probably 1999.....or 98. After seeing him destroy this ledge in some ipath shoes , I was sold.
@@christophersawyer253 I skated a bunch of Grasshoppers. That was the best, most consistent shoe and was made of hemp! Most favorite for sure!
Fantastic video Bobby. I think the resurgence of the rubber toe-cap craze really kicked off again in 2015 when Cory Kennedy came out with the Nike SB All Court.
I grew up on the airwalks and those etnies natus were killer
Bobby Puleo in half cabs is such a natural thing
Holy shit, I forgot how gigantic the Cabs were before the Half Cab. It’s funny too that they’re both tricks(full cab/half cab).
I’m very proud too be a true skate nerd 🛹🛹🛹
I know this video is a couple years old but having watched it today the commentary about the Tony Hawk Airwalk prototype hits home. Airwalk’s first ads featuring Hawk hit the mags in about ‘86 IIRC. On the east coast we figured it would be months or a year before we saw these shoes. Suddenly word came down through my crew that a local discount shoe store had Airwalks. This place wasn’t a chain like Famous Footwear, it was mom and pop type shop in a discount mart. Sure enough- they were stocked heavily with pink first gen Airwalk high tops with suede Velcro lace savers and they were CHEAP. Everyone I knew wore them for a summer. We didn’t see regular stocks of Airwalks of any style again for months or maybe a year in mainstream shoe stores or skate shops. Was this the Hawk prototype that had been abandoned after contracts didn’t immediately come together? All I know is he wore them in the mags and so did we…in the Pottstown, PA area. My friends in South Jersey saw them and wanted to buy them off my feet.
I had at least 4 pairs of those mike Carroll dcs. Freaking loved em.
Loving these videos Bobby!!! Keep em coming.
WOW Bobby did not know about the NATAS.............great shoes.......I was so stoked, a Pro got a shoe......had to order from france at the time. When I first got them still couldn't believe it....................Natas was great and it was designed get at the time.
Bobby’s the man!
The Jason Lee Airwalk was my first skate shoe ever back in the mid 90s. Loved the Axion Guy's too.
Bobby makes this...so genuinely interested and asks the best questions! Harder to do than you’d think...keep it up
This was amazing!! Keep these coming Bobby!!!
So rad!! Thank you for this content yo
I had a pair of Koston signed by him at slam city jam in Vancouver 98...
Axion, all time favourite skate shoe.
Koston never rode for axion bro
@@DARRENTINOnz what I meant to say ES Koston..
The axiom shoe I had was Kareem Campbell, i guess i should of been more specific lol..
this was sick! thank you
Those guy Mariano Axions where the best 4 pairs of skate shoes i have ever owned hands down
Sal Barbier 23s
D.C. Colin McKays
Kareem Campbell Axions
peculiar peasant the Sals, those were the shit.
@@johnnyc.3261 9th grade I walked in with a fresh pair of white with baby blue sole
My buddy had baby blue with the white sole
Kareem Campbells' "KCK's" from Duff's
🤙Rad video, I always tune into these. .Dc/Vans with a ton of those reissues right now!
Cool content!
Respect to Bobby. This is great.
This channel is amazing
Just awesome! Go by them books
DOPE! This is it :)
i had those guy mariano's and skated burnside with them
and koston's
Rad video!
I had the burnquist shoe in black and grey. It was awesome
Respect
the Danny Way mega ramp boot is supertech
Those Axions are so sick I had some too and they got beat up pretty quickly but they were such good looking kicks.
8:34 and not 1 single mention of the SLB 23's from és...shame on you bobby.
Vision shell toes, and the MC-1400 with the lace cover n straps were the shit!!!
Wow, i still have those salman agah vans in the basement. Unfortunately i've trimmed off the white rubber toe piece. For some reason i disliked it at the time.Maybe because it was neither a full toe cap, and it kinda caught your eye, so you couldn't 'not' notice it when skating. Also they were pretty darn heavy shoes for low tops.
🤘
Bobby dude I love this shit
@4:40 the board graphic bsides satan 😉 was somehow like kris markovich given graphic inspired 💪🔥 is the story of the failed puma sb deal+program by brezinsky is also in the book???
Whoa, what about that Vans shoe with the flys on it, and the ad was Mike Sola doing some judo at the big surf contest in Arizona?
Yooo i had the sheffey 2s from dvs and they seriously looked chewed on just like those Daewons.
Those Danny ways were NOT released in stores!!!!
I had axions in 2001 I stole off my older brother that were literally destroyed but loved them so much 😂😂
👍👍👍👍👍
I'm surprised they didn't mention adio, globe, or emarica.. But sick history! (:
DC Needs to bring back the 1994 Mike Carroll shoe. pause at 7:17. So dope!
@@Abraxis Ya guy!!
Yessssss them boys are ill. I was only 2 years old! For 94 got DAM that is a ridiculous pic. That board has gotta be a 7.75......is that a FS flip?????
@SIOUXICIDE * I was gonna say that's what it looks like
Those are nice , what model is the es they show right after that ?
@@ManiacDrummer1212 pretty sure he did not land that fs flip, it was by my house lol.
Natas was the first pro shoe?! Not Cab?I'm gonna win so many bets! 😂
The first DC's I ever saw and gotten were the Boxers. I thought those were the first DC's
WolfWould I had the Danny way 1 shoe in white.
@@christophersawyer253 Rad! He's a legend.🤙
History lessons
Bobby rules, true skate rat
Remember Vita!?
Had no idea pros wore such wrecked shoes.
MC vans were the best
where can i buy these....zzzzzzzO_o
Anybody know the shoe on the bottm right hand at 1:46?
Looks like Vans Cab 8s. Definitely a Cab shoe since it has the dragon
dobis
don't forget about vic Novettipolae
whats the es at 7:27? bring those back, not the scheme
Looks mainly like an accel but just mid top. Dope though...the scheme is def ridiculous and the other one they recently put out too....I would say the Koston 2 or whichever one had the airpocket first. I like something between this plain shoe here and an Osiris D3 lol. When it's right the board feel is fine even with a big board
@@ManiacDrummer1212 i realized its the SLB
@@subledger wow yeah! I just tried looking for a pair in my size. Looks discontinued. But yeah there is the Silo and the Symbol........those ones are ridiculous :)
What about vision think they had pro shes first
I’d skate salman agahs pro model today
I remember getting a free t-shirt w the salmons.
Homeboy didn’t know who Etnies was . 🤦♂️
When he asked if guy actually skated that very shoe Lmaooo Guy was the flyest mafucker out then, he wouldn't be wearing those ripped things
Savier...
There’s no way Guy wore those Axions will all the Shoe-goo.
Furst
Meh….Show me a pair of Airwalk “Next” (preferably olive). Everyone remembers the Enigma and the NTS, but rarely mention Next.
gross, handling pros old moldy shoes. I can understand un used but used.. gross.
@N K Have you ever looked into the guys that put together "Made For Skate?" Pretty sure that they're not skaters, but skate shoe fetishists. They're not "museum guys."
Just sayin'... don't ever run a black light over those shoes!
Nothing against bobby personally but unless he learns how to not come off like a know it all, u should find a different host... genuinely interested yet not jaded.
no way, Bobby rules
