I am a retired architect and was pleased to see you prepared a floor plan immediately. As you have been finding the service stairs useful I hope you will consider keeping them. Such a large house needs a "back stair" to help keep the front staircase clean and welcoming. (They are probably original to the house as they go all the way up to the servant''s quarters on the top floor.)
I have lived in a normal size Victorian semi house that still had its rear servant stairs. They are still really useful and make the house flow. Neighbours have had theirs removed and it just doesn't work.
And, it's a conversation piece, people are very interested to see/use them.
Do consider keeping yours, in such a large house, you will come to value them.😊👍
Great to have in case an emergency occurs! I would really hate to have to say, geez I wish we had kept those stairs😢!!! I think they are really nice! Just as much as I Hate that wall by the top of the banister!
It's amazing to see how much you've done since last video. Never apologise for not filming in real time. We all can see the hard work and long hours spent removing unwanted items. We are hapoy to join you and follow your progress. The transformation already is massive. It will be wonderful to see it restored as a family home😊
Please, please, please do not apologize for the video. Speaking for myself I much prefer as you're doing now. I think we all understand the enormity of this project. 👍👍👍
Thank you so much!
I always like to think that old houses breathe a sigh of relief that someone is actually caring for them and adding to their story. And The courtyard is a triumph!
That landing wall realy needs to be removed! It will make a massive difference.
It's already turning back to a lovely family home.😊
I've lived in multiple old houses, and I always tell someone renovating a home to be sure and seal up each room as you work on it to prevent rats from getting in. Old houses are notorious for having little holes that the little monsters can enter...
Don’t apologize for anything, we’re all just appreciative to be sharing the journey with you both.
Getting a lot done before wintertime is a ticking clock before it gets cold and harder to work even indoors with no heating. You just stay and do what you need to do, we’ll follow.
So excited to be following your journey, a lovely house even now and the potential of making it your home is going to be such a lovely series of videos to look forward too. Thank you, Maureen.
There are people who like seeing the actual labor that goes into clearing out a house, but I'm not one of those people. Just walking through the first video with you was enough to realize that every room presents a challenge. Now comes the good part...the transformation. The benefit of you explaining what you feel needs to be done is that there seem to be a few experts who may give, and have given you some really good advice. I'm sure you'll be happy to share the success of this venture with all of those good souls who took the time to examine your videos and gave very technical instructions, and it's to your credit that you graciously and gratefully accept their input. You are both doing great and the fact that you both have work and/or school outside of this project is absolutely astounding to me! I trust you are looking after each other and making sure you're taking care of yourselves as regards your health. We are all anxious to see, as I think Emma said, the first bit of new paint on those walls, but just cleaning it up has been a huge improvement and really lets us see the promise this beautiful old rectory holds!
Thank you very much! We're certainly overdoing it at the moment, but will find a comfortable routine soon I'm sure :)
Don’t worry about your before and after shots and not action shots. I really enjoy your videos!
Glad you like them! Thank you 😊
I believe we all just love what you are doing and the fact that you are sharing your journey with us. Don’t apologize for anything.😊
This house is just wonderful. Thank you for breathing new life into it. It makes this Grandmas heart smile. 😊🏴
Thank you. Your comment made us smile too 🙂
I rather like this format; you showed actual work in real time, work done in sped up time and before and after. You're all doing a wonderful job!
You've already done a lot in a month. Bravo! Even the birds are helping out. "Home improvements" take time. Thank you for sharing your journey.
What you have done so far is really opening the place up. Can't wait to see the wall by the staircase removed. Looking good!
Thank you!
I appreciate how good you are at explaining what the renovation entails. Taking us from room to room helps us see the "bones" of the house, something we don't always get in other renovation videos. I cannot wait to see the changes to come!
Don’t apologise! It’s so interesting, and you’ll have this amazing video diary as a record of your journey afterwards!
You have done so much in such a short time. Very wise to get the asbestos sorted, a necessary expense. Thank you for posting this.
Thank you for sharing & for allowing us all to accompany you & Emma on your journey of transforming & renovating the Rectory. Wishing you both every success 😊
Leave the crow a peanut so he brings you shiny objects!
Thank you so much!
I would think the annex would provide a great temporary residence while you tackle the main house. No doubt the project will require more time than you ever imagined, so why not establish a comfortable get away from the work and mess each day. Love seeing your progress.
That is a top notch Idea, and practically essential to cutting down on the need to travel back and forth to the job. Does not have to be a finished job just get the kitchen and bathroom working fit out a bedroom and some secondhand furniture and your gold. another benefit is some heating in there will dry the place out and help prevent any mold returning.?
They already have a full house they live in..
@@frenchartantiquesparis424 Is it close to the chateau or do they have to waste time traveling on the weekends to the worksite?
The old water tanks from the attic can be used as large plant “pot”. Fig trees like to have their roots contained…and we used an unneeded water tank for our figs many years ago…they are thriving and productive😀😀😀
Good suggestion! It's excellent for other crops, too, and can become an architectural feature in the garden. Disguised with pallet boards and/or painted, they can be quite attractive. Just don't forget the drainage holes and some gravel, then use woody trimmings to fill in at the bottom, like hugelkultur in a container.
Or they would make a nice water feature in the garden, buried with rocks and plants, and either just a little aerator pump/spray fountain or a waterfall.
It's great, I'm sitting here with my feet up, a cup of tea next to me, and I'm watching other people do all the work. I will enjoy the finished house very much!
I'm really impressed with what you've done in just one month!
No apologies needed! Sometimes before and afters work better than all the same work shots. You'll find your way as you go along, and you'll learn what works, when to do time lapses, what music works, when to use subtitles for explanation (sometimes way easier than trying to talk thru it) what makes good editing, all that. Thanks for letting us come along for the ride! You've gotten a lot done, wow! I know renovation is hard work, but I hope you can find ways to make it fun, and if I can give you one piece of advice, it's to smile!
The work completed so far looks amazing and it’s so good to see an old house be brought back to its former glory.
You have put in a lot of hard work. Take it easy, one day at a time. Thank you for sharing.
If you find the original hard wood floors ,just sand them back to bare wood and reseal the wood and make it feature of rooms the hardwood flooring is in , it could actually save money for other projects in the Rectory .
Yess bare treated wood floors are so classy and much better for your health than carpet which gets impregnated with dirt and dust
One problem, and I don't think it's been mentioned by anyone else yet .. is the running costs of the house after renovation. i.e. it's a big old house to heat. Wooden floors - while lovely to look at - are very cold and can cool down a house quite a lot, and are cold to walk on during winter months. So there are some advantages to a decent thermal underlay and carpet.
@@zedzeduk just get a couple of big rugs and place the furniture around the edges of the rugs with either side tables with a coffee table in the middle of the rugs at the same distance from each piece of seating in the formal rooms , while the wooden floors make for easier cleaning in the rooms with high foot traffic . In the upper floors it also has the advantage of the same easy cleaning methods with wooden floors unless it's a bedroom where you have the bedrooms carpeted for warmth and it keeps the cost of renovating the floors down as the rooms with carpets will be expensive to buy depending on the type of carpet if the house is fully carpeted .
I can’t imagine wanting wall to wall carpet in such a space - or any space: the floor will never be clean because you can’t wash the floor and it gets impregnated with dust, human skin waste, etc., etc.: very unhygienic! If I had such a place, I might consider is underfloor heating under wood floors and same under tile in the kitchen and bathrooms.
I consider myself (and other viewers) lucky that you find time to do any video work at all. Getting the work on the house done on such a part-time basis is enough to be going on with. Well done so far!
So impressed by all the work you've done so far. It's good to see your feathered friends enjoying the work you were doing in the courtyard!
The courtyard looks amazing now! Loving the fact you took all the flat front doors off; I can literally feel this place "breathing" again. Great work so far guys, keep the vids coming!! Watching from Australia 🇦🇺 ❤😊
Thanks, Mum, for mowing. The lawns will be Gorgeous!! The grounds are lovely.
The garden is looking so much more civilized - what a job that initial mowing was! I just started my own compost piles this year, and I've learned that just a pile of green stuff doesn't break down very quickly. Some manure and a regular watering will help it go more quickly. As with everything little research goes a long way! Well done in hiring the plumber, architect and asbestos inspector! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. What a huge amount of clearing out you two have done - you can begin to see what the Rectory will look like. Well done!
As you're learning, a happy compost heap wants green and brown. Too much fresh greenery can just go all slimy and rotten on its own, so you can layer in torn-up brown cardboard, paper and newspaper (no color print!), kleenex, paper towels etc, layered with some soil, to stand in for dry leaves etc.
@@chezmoi42 Thanks, I can use all the advice I can get!
No worries, Charlie about action shots or editing. The before and after walk arounds are really great. Plus, your drone shots are really interesting to see the progress. You and Emma are literally on your hands and knees bringing this amazing structure back to its original glory. Thanks for sharing your adventure. It's very interesting. Be well.
You have made so much progress in a month. Amazing thus far and as projects go, you learn along the way. Thank you for taking us along and showing us the rooms!
Many kind greetings from Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.A. Congratulations on your new home. We enjoy watching your videos and wish you much success in the future projects ahead. Thank you for sharing this process with us. Looking forward to the next video!
You ALL ought to be very proud of yourselves.....you have accomplished so very much in such a short time......many blessings to you all.
You should both be proud of how much you have done so far, looking really good. So glad you are getting the Asbestos survey undertaken, take it from me, that is a major milestone in your redevelopment journey, you will have a sense of freedom when done, so you can work safely, keep the content coming.
I say keep the front the front and the back the back and just make the front fancier (ask your architect for tips). To be able to sit in that back garden with that gorgeous house behind you will be magical.
I quite agree. We haven't seen the front much, but I think if that's where people arrive, it could be terribly confusing for visitors to know where to knock on the garden façade, if they even find it by wandering around the corner. Friends have a pavilion with the back to the front of the lot, and I always feel awkward knocking on the living or dining room french doors. They use the garage as an entry, so they don't think about it, and meanwhile the front entry (on the back of the house) goes unused.
I'm glad to see you're wearing masks and gloves and coveralls to stay protected and safe especially until you find out what you're dealing with
It's clear how comfortable you are both getting with the whole video thing, the editing and presenting is getting better and better with every video.😊👍🏻
I Love the before and after footage and, of course, any footage is a gift to us all so just do what you can. The work is the important thing. We are just your cheering and enjoying squad. It is such a beautiful property. Great decision about the annex; leaving it alone for now as a useful base!
Before you finalise a plan with the architect can I suggest you see if you can find something about how the room layouts where originally. This might help with what you do with the layout. Also as you are seeing how useful the servants stairs are I hope you reconsider losing them. They are part of the history of the building after all and will be useful to a house that big
You've made lots of progress so far. It's made a world of difference. Your subscriber numbers have increased greatly, too, i noticed. Think i was one of the first few hundred you had. This will make an excellent family home.
Oh, wow! It's looks a lot more open, airy, and light filled now. Room to think!
Save all the old wiring keep safe and any cooper to weigh in for scarp getting a little back . Doing so well with it slowly slowly 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤
It really makes sense that the front of the house is the side with the huge yard. It was so fun to see the grande staircase as you walked from the big room into the area where the staircase is. Looks so natural. So glad to see this project. God bless and keep the faith.
I had asbestos removed from my 1885 house. It was very expensive. Rooms were sealed off, workmen had a clean-dirty showers in a huge van parked outside, the inspector visited 2 days running to measure fibres content in the air, after the removal. Quite an ordeal. But it must be done. Good luck!
Your dog is cute, I bet you have made him very happy with that enormous garden! Every episode needs a shot of the dog in it imo! : )
Your videos are fine. I for one will be here til the end. This is a fascinating project and I am enjoying the journey!
Thank you very much!
I'm loving this project so much! Your rectory reminds me of a beautiful house from Jane Austen's time😊 Keep up the good work!
*Never ever apologise ok 🙂 This is your future home that you are restoring it back to what it was. So as this is YOUR channel, you can put up whatever you like.... 🙂 We are all here cheering you on... as this will be a long process for you both. 🙂 All the best with the asbestos to see if there is more in the house plus also the cost to get rid of it all safely. 🙂 nz*
It's very interesting to see how you are progressing with the project. Don't worry about filming the work, you just need to get it done.
I am glad to hear you went ahead with an asbestos survey.
You're doing a great job. God strengthen you and bless this work.
Thank you so much
No need to apologise about your video format, the walk-around and chatting is perfect for what you're presenting, it's the before/after aspect which is most interesting!
You mentioned small jobs making a difference (hear me out on this because it will sound insignificant), clean all the faces on your light switches and plugs. It might sound silly but they will be like little beacons of cleanliness while the walls are waiting to be sorted, it will make a difference to your wellbeing if not make for good content.
That old property is really coming back to life thsnks to you! 🎉❤
I lived in flat, build in the late 1940’ties. In the kitchen, there was two floor two ceiling cupboards. One had ventilation like in the northern room, and it was meant for keeping food chilled. So this room was maybe the original kitchen.
A very lovely house with tons of potential!!!!!
You could save money and travel time by moving into the annex. You are very fortunate to have this beautiful home.
This is going to be absolutely amazing to watch you transform it back to it original beauty .Thanks for sharing
Renovating, remodeling and gutting out take all the time and energy so before and after are gonna have to be the norm! As someone who gutted and remodeled a retirement cottage while my husband was still working away from home didn’t leave much time for filming which we never did. It took us 14+ years because we had one and 1/2 days each week to make progress. Not much time in the world of renovating/remodeling. I’m truly enjoying your journey and anything you share is worth viewing!!!:):):)
You guys are doing a fabulous fabulous job. You got so much done and the courtyard looks amazing.
What an improvement removing the horrible conversion.
Everything you do is an improvement. Good going both of you. Before and afters are good. Don't worry. Best wishes.
Great work. Starting to see the potential. Use the old water tanks as planters in the garden. Paint them too.
Thanks for sharing your project with us!
My hubbie and I just want to see the before and after. I do like your walk around when you explain what you’ve done, and what you are planning to do. Great video! I keep imagining a huge natural pond in the ‘front’ for wildlife to come. Also less grass to mow for your mum. Love how you are almost surrounded completely by trees. (Maybe plant a couple trees so you don’t have the view to the left.😊)
Thank you so much for sharing with us! All very interesting. Don’t stress out about the videos as long as you give us something to look forward to view. We want to be with you all the way on this journey. 👏👋😘
Thank you so much!
The opening tune and shot is really sweet
What a great project/journey. Wish Iived near to help. My two cents are: Watch out for the mold in there!!! Certain kinds could also be a health Hazzard! Best of luck, will watching from from across the pond in USA. You'll teach the rest of us too.
You've done an amazing amount of work during the past month and we're enjoying your progress.
Thank you so much!
I love the symmetry of Georgian architecture and your future home will be beautiful. Loved this episode. Crack on!
We get it, no need to apologize! Keep going, your doing a great job.
Decorative framed mirrors strategically hung near windows could be considered to throw back light into darker areas like back stairs and corridors.
You have achieved so much, given the time you have had access, even more so considering you are both working. No need to apologise for content, as you say "You are busy". A cheat for filming might be to put a camera in the room you are working on and set it up on time lapse!
You’ve accomplished a lot in a short time. I look forward to more progress. Thank you!
Thank you too!
Love what you have done so far! I can't wait to see what the architect comes up with, so much potential!
Looking good….having the place open should freshen things up, you look like you’re working hard, glad to see your wearing protective clothing! Much further down the road in your remodelling….but if you are replacing the windows in the priory you could recycle the old windows for a greenhouse in your garden. Don’t apologise for your videos…they are good to watch!
Please we all dance to a different drummer and I'm pleased to just follow your lead. It's looking great so far and will watch to the end.
Thankyou sooo much for sharing your videos! I am a gran in South Australia and it is like “ going home” watching you restore this lovely building. Sending blessings!
Good on ya for being safe with Asbestos, and it seems like you're coming around on the second stair well, there were so many comments too urging you to keep it
That's a nice sunny courtyard.
Excellent progress!👍👍
I previously mentioned scrap value for the various metal objects which you are removing and that also applies to the electric cables.
Excellent, looking so much better already 👍👍👍
I think your presentation of work updates is terrific and you're making great progress on a number of areas. Glad you caught that asbestos issue before you got too deep into the danger zone. I have to say the opening scene was sweet with Mutley walking toward the camera - great music choice haha! I must say I don't like comedy skits per se but this quick cute moment is charming.
Thank you very much!
I can see one of those tanks as a fish pond. Great progress so far!
I love the before and afters, because we can see the huge amount you've managed to get done in a relatively short time. It's like a slow unveiling and builds the anticipation. You're doing a great job and it's going to take time. Hang in there!
Thank you! We certainly have a long way to go 🙂
The yard and courtyard look amazing - great job!! The rest of the work is certainly looking to where you can decide what you both want to do with your new space. Love from Canada!
You've probably finished removing the Radiators now. . but if not then here's a tip. As you take the radiator off the bracket spin it 180 degrees so the bottom is now the the top. That way no nasty black water floods out and stains the floor. Empty them outside so as not to make a mess in the house.
Great lockpicking job. 👍👍👍👍
Great Video. Thank you
EDIT: I see you have all the Rad's off. I'll leave the comment in just in case someone else benefits from it.
Thanks! I did figure this out myself, eventually, after some mess :)
No, your videos are very welcome, love seeing the bones of the house gradually revealed. It's such a beautiful house and will be amazing when you've finished. Understandably that will be quite a long time in the future but you've made such good progress in just a month and appear to be the type of people that get stuff done I expect we'll be happy to watch the ripping out of walls etc. I'm especially looking forward to Emma's interior decorating. The courtyard looks wonderful and the lawn will very soon turn lush and green. You have definitely done the right thing buying that house, it will make a fantastic family home and will be worth so much more than you paid for it so all good. I wish you well.
Those plastic water containers can be utilized as containers for growing plants/veggies etc. Just paint or decorate them.
You've really made a difference already... It's looking great..
Loving this.
Now go and treat mum to a sit on mower! 😊
Nice to see an older property being looked after, in my old town, some beautiful buildings have been bulldozed 😢
Don't apologise,I think it's so interesting seeing how far you have got and in only a month, keep up the good work, thankyou
Thank you!
It’s a lot cleaner now ,you have done a lot.The garden looks beautiful and I love the big Copper Beech tree .When your surveyor comes you will find there are a lot of walls that have been added to make the flats and hallways. The house would have had large bedrooms upstairs originally.Usually about the same as downstairs,it’s not often the old houses had more. Its like the attic would have probably been for live in staff male on one side and female on the other.Occasionally they were sectioned into rooms. In a rectory I should imagine there would have been a Housekeeper,a maid,a cook, who probably lived out,and a girl who did for the cook..A possible nanny ,but Nannies did not live with servants ,usually in a small room next to a nursery. You have not shown the basement. The up attic could have been children’s rooms and Nannie’s..That is if there’s rooms in the basement..Because in the Edwardian period the Kitchen was still below stairs and the servants…usually lived in rooms down there.Cook, kitchen girl there was the horses too as he would have needed staff for that ,but that part may be missing as they usually lived in the stables.Although it was not a big house it still would have had servants.Stables with at least a bore and carriage, possibly 2 horses .It’s a shame you cannot get the original plans. You could try the Library and ask who to contact.I think plans need to be registered even then.Alternatively try contacting the church they may still have them. Hope this helps but it gives an idea as to the workings and how the Edwardians home was set up.Its not a castle but would have had servants. So there’s rooms for them in the house in the attic or under the stairs.
Wow!!! What a lovely single family home you are going to have!!! Already it looks so much better!!!
You really have accomplished so much in such a short period of time. It will be fabulous when you have it done. God bless and good luck going forward. Phyliss
The court yard would make a nice kitchen garden. Loads of work already and it's looking less sad.
If the floorplan allows, I'd put the kitchen in the sunniest portion of the ground floor.
Cheers!
You are blessed to have a great family to help you.
