  • Hi, everyone! Today we move on to planking the aft deck. In the last video, we mounted all of our stringers and identified a problem with the work we did on our bulwarks. Now we'll address that issue and dive into fixing it.

    You guys have a lot of patience and very skillful. Nice to watch these videos. I learn a little Everytime. I'm a lifelong commercial fisherman myself it's nice to see true fisherman,which to me are guys/ gals that can remedy most of not all of their problems as well as catch fish. Keep up the good work. I hope you have a profitable summer.

    When we (Marine Welding 1973-78) built anything out of aluminum we used WD-40 for cut lubrication. We also used cheap to expensive saw blades. We saved all and reset the kerf. The expensive ones seemed to last a bit longer for staying sharp.

      Yep, was going to suggest a bit of WD-40. Same experience too with the special non-ferrous blades. They last way longer.

    I cut thousands of extrusions with a chop saw and a aluminum blade in my day. There is a difference in the tooth shape over a wood blade. The key is WD-40 on the blade about every 3 cuts depending on thickness. Cuts clean and can be sharpened. And the welders didn't complain about the WD.

    As a fellow island dweller I fully understand. I always prep my welds with lacquer thinner and WD40 wipes off very easily. Probably also why it isn't good for much else! I shop the internet for my blades. Haven't been off the island in 16 years.

    I always love jobs you do . Because you show that everything can been done by anyone , using diffrent tools , taking different aproach and throught measuring trial and error everyone reach to end result .
    I have one question to ask . Maybe i missed an episode , but did you paint the floor under the deck with that white paint ? Also if you did or didnt , wouldnt be better to paint those metal standoffs of the deck to protect them more and prolonged their life ? I know they are stainless to some degree but you know better that sea is rotting everything .Thank you !

    I have been using a regular carpenter's carbide blade for forty years or better on aluminum. They last a long time especially if you give them a squirt of WD40 (about the only thing other than cleaning it is good for.) as you cut now and again. Keeps that gum from building up. Actually diesel oil is just as good but not as convenient as the spray can. Metal cutting blades generally have (way down in the fine fine print) a thickness rating for steel and they are not as all purpose as they like to portray. When you use the right blade for the right thickness they will last much longer. When I first started cutting aluminum carbide was not all that available so we used regular saw blades and they actually did surprisingly well. Not as good as carbide of course. Again if you use the right number of teeth for the thickness you are working with they will last much longer.

      @EISAlaska  Před měsícem +1

      We used to get the Dewalt carbide blades here for $10 bucks or so. They stopped carrying those and the current selection is poor or really expensive! Tough thing about living on an island is we can't just run over to the next town and shop at another store. I try to avoid using lubricant as it does affect welds and needs to be cleaned up prior to weld prep or it just gets into the metal and contaminates the weld. Soap does work well though and we have been using it throught this project.

    I have struggled to understand the reason for building the deck up like this raised height and with slatted boards and a gap that will let debris fall below compared to the Fish Tale where you have a solid floor beneath your soles that can be easily washed down and cleaned. No doubt I am sure you have thought this through and have a method to this, I am just struggling to understand the process and why this was considered??? My first thought is you needed a sturdy new floor and you wanted something that let the water pass through, but I will let you explain, please.
    How well will you be able to clean under the floor when finished and will there be a need to clean in the process of catching and preparing the catch onboard?
    With the shower and more kitchen space onboard will you have to store fresh water, and store and pump out black and gray water upon return to port regularly or is the release of these ok for smaller vessels on the ocean? And before people get grossed out or outraged at the question or answer if you knew what gets pumped into our oceans by our governments you would be appalled, besides fish poop and pee in the ocean.
    Will you be equipping the EI with LED light fixtures for more efficiency and better lighting?
    Will the EI also be set up for the same fishing use as the FT?
    Thank for taking the time to answer, love you all. Stay safe!

    The false deck looks beautiful, but I am wondering, how are you going to fasten the reel for longlining Halibut in the future?

    • @EISAlaska
      @EISAlaska  Před měsícem

      Great question Karl. We will mount a permanent bracket that straddles the tank compartment hatch. Here we can gain access to the underside of the deck and make a very strong connection by through bolting to the deck beams. The removable false deck can still be slid out allowing us access to the compartment with the reel in place. The permanent bracket will have blind nut welded to underside to receive reel bolts. It sounds more complicated then it is. I will explain in a video soon if it doesn't make much sense!

    • @karldahl4113
      @karldahl4113 Před měsícem

      @@EISAlaska Makes perfect sense now! I knew you guys had a plan for the mounting but wasn't sure how you would do it. I do understand how but am looking forward to seeing it on another video. Thanks, your faithful follower, Capt. Karl

    Cheap blades ? In Australia a cheap one is $80.00 dollars, have you tried for easier cutting apply to the blade some wax, tallow or even soap. Cheer,s.
