Dancers: Sergei Polunin and Anna Ol
Born in Kherson, Ukraine in 1989, Sergei Polunin / Сергей Полунин is a Russian ballet dancer. Famous for his "once every hundred years" talent, he has incredulous elevation and impeccable technique. From an early age, he displayed glorious dramatic range. Home videos of him as a small boy improvising to Pavarotti are very foretelling. At age 19, he became the youngest ever male principal dancer with London's Royal Ballet company.
Ballet gained an unprecedented new awareness when he danced in Hozier's viral video "Take Me To Church." People who would never have paid any attention to ballet began to watch the tattooed phenom. He is generally attributed with bringing ballet to the modern common man. Classical, yet cutting edge, Sergei starred in Diesel's "Make Love Not Walls" campaign and has put his mark on many other promotions.
Sergei is a much sought after model and actor. Fashion designers love his breathtaking physique and brooding good looks. He has garnered only positive reviews for his acting. His appearances include Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of the Orient Express, the biographical documentary Dancer, The White Crow, and Red Sparrow.
Anna Ol (Krasnoyarsk, Russia) joined Dutch National Ballet as a principal in August 2015. She trained at the Krasnoyarsk Ballet College and has danced with the Siberian State Ballet, the State Opera of Tatarstan, the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St Petersburg and the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Academic Music Theatre in Moscow, where she danced all the major roles of the classical repertoire and worked with choreographers like Jiří Kylián and John Neumeier, Natalia Makarova, Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Jerome Robbins and others.
Anna won gold at the Grand Prix Galina Ulanova in Krasnoyarsk in 2008 and at the Arabesque competition in Perm (Russia) in 2010. In 2018 she was nominated for 'Best dancer of the year' in the British Critic's Choice. Anna danced as a guest soloist at various international ballet galas. In 2017 she performed with the Semperoper Ballett in Dresden as Manon, in Kenneth MacMillan's highly acclaimed choreography of the same name, and in 2018 she performed as guest soloist with the Staatsballett Berlin in a reconstruction of La Bayadère by Alexei Ratmansky.

Pam Boehme Simon
Sergei could be my grandson. 🤩
I never thought that I would be hours and hours watching a man dancing!
I'm fascinated with Serve!
Sergei is BRIGHT. He is the BEAUTY.👑🥇⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Yes..me too..he is wonderfull..and she too..spend lot of time see a sergei dance..dont have more words to sergei ..feeling ..the bes for hi and family and
Electric and absolutely addictive. I - of presumably sane mind - find myself entrenched to continually watch him here, happily sliding down the rabbit hole of UTube
Heartwrenching! I adore Sergei. His passion and talent are electric and his ability to embody the character is remarkable!
Exquisite
They were splendid! I almost died of emotions. Thanks, Pam, for this holy moment.
Your comments are always so spot on. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Him and Anna Ol : just amazing in this Tragic Tale "Mayerling". Your voice is captivating. You explain and summarize divinely. Humbly thank you :)) Friendly, Joe
I wish this ballet would be' on stage in the next few months...
What a tragic but beautiful ballet! Both dancers are just superb!
Mayerling is so unknown, yet it is one of my favorite ballets. Sir Kenneth MacMillan was a choreographic genius. And NO ONE can touch Sergei and Anna in these tragic roles in my opinion. Thanks for writing, AND for watching.
Yes, I agree with Pam, it's the exellence touch of Sergey and Anna in ballet space. Nobody is better.
Pam Boehme Simon ❤️😊
Thank you for this exquisite video of such a poignant story. Sergei glides through this difficult choreography with his brilliant technique while Mary performs with such fluidity and devotion. It is always a pleasure and much love to you, C💟💟💟
I saw Mayerling with Sergey în Munich Opera ,was amazing and All the Moments so beautiful and magnific! He touch the Sky is from another Planet! Two Performance was fantastic, because Sergey has a True and Amazing Gift to convey feelings! He dance with Ksenia Shevtsova unforgotten with Heart and Soul! Thank you, dear Pam for your amazing Work! Lot of Love!
Oh what a perfectly priceless treasure that memory will be. So happy for you. One day... one day.... Thanks for the kind words, and for taking the time to watch and write. Big TEXAS hugs your way.
Dear Pam-Thank you, thank you, thank you for this channel and your homage to all things pertaining to Sergei Polunin! I first personally discovered him in February, 2017, when he starred in the “Make Love, Not Walls” piece for Diesel Clothing. I knew nothing of him, but recognized him as a ballet virtuoso immediately. I found this delicious channel when searching for anything I could find. I subscribed immediately. It’s always a delight to open my mail and find a notification of a new video of Sergei. I’ll sign off now, but I could go on for days. Thank you for your obvious devotion to bringing Sergei to the notice of more people and your generosity in sharing your own knowledge and insight.
I read your dear, dear comment early on, yet have not found proper words to answer as I am so touched by it. Am still trying to put together a worthy response. Just wanted to say this much for now, as too much time was passing and could not bear the thought of you thinking I was ignoring such a kind and heartfelt comment. Big hugs from Texas, and we'll "speak" again soon.
Pam Boehme Simon
I look forward to it, Lady Pam, and send greetings to you in Texas from a landlocked fellow Polunik in neighboring Oklahoma (yes, we know ballet here as well).
Anna Ol is soooo incredible here !
And music you added helps to feel more tragic, than the classical music does.
Thank you so much for sharing this intense and very dark piece. He and his leading lady really do it justice, and are absolutely spellbinding to watch. I particularly appreciate the commentary, which helps give context to the dance.
Thank you Claudia. Your comment is much appreciated as I still to this day am terribly uncomfortable speaking in my videos. I force myself as there is so much I wanted to point out yet don't want to clutter up the video with text. So anything supportive of my efforts is most welcome.
I agree completely with you... to me Sergei and Anna Ol ARE Rudolf and Mary. If you look at photos of the actual Mary Vetsera, Anna looks a lot like her. The chemistry between the two... if it weren't so tragic, it would be downright hott lol. I never tire of watching them dance this ballet, even after the hours spent editing... I could still watch, over and over without tiring of it.
Thanks again, and big hugs from Texas.
@@PamBoehmeSimon Well, I'm glad you got over your discomfort! I'm sure you wouldn't have been cluttering up anything if you'd pointed out everything you wanted to. Ballet is beautiful to look at even without context, but context adds another layer of complexity that allows us to even more deeply appreciate the dance. Big hugs back!
One of your best, Pam! Thank you!
Oh Kathy, thank YOU!! **mwah**
Amazing! No words¨
I'm so happy you like it Mira. Thank you!!
tears in my eyes , for the performance and your commentary .Thank goodness people recorded this performance .Wish I could buy the DVD. their performance was staggering . Thankyou dear Pam .x.
Thank YOU Jane, for this beautiful comment. It is a SHAME there is not more video of Sergei available. If only the Royal Ballet would get over his leaving and release even just some of it. It's a priceless treasure the rest of the world needs to see.
I echo your sentiments for both this exquisite performance and Pam's superb work! My question is WHY isn't it available on DVD ( please let me know where if I've just missed it)? It borders on criminal to me to NOT record for posterity and make available for purchase more representations of these incredible artist's works....especially Sergei's:-). Stepping off of the soapbox now but this cultural gatekeeping really does need to be shifted.....
@@nancybinder8006 OMG yes yes yes yes yes you are a woman after my own heart. It IS a crime. I would like to share, if you don't mind, my Sergei website. I speak of just what you're talking about here.
sergeipoluningracefulbeast.com/
Btw, this is not available on DVD... sadly. And know this... the Royal films EVERYTHING... but then they sit on it. Thanks and I'm happy to scootch over a bit and let you stand with me on my soapbox!! LOL.
@@nancybinder8006 and thanks so much for the kind mention of my work. It's an honor and my pleasure to be sure. And you've given me my smile for the day **skips off happily**
@@PamBoehmeSimon Thanks so much for replying, Pam. I absolutely will check out your website...this cultural gatekeeping is a soapbox I feel strongly about and I believe that Sergei's ability to "think outside the dominant paradigm" is one of the reasons I've been drawn to his work (besides his amazing ability to EMBODY both the movement AND the characters:-). I'm with you on being perplexed by the Royal's extra special brand of gatekeeping ...yes, they do have a selection of DVD's available, if steeply priced, but the scope is limited in my view (I AM grateful for the Marguerite and Armand with Sergei and Tamara:-)
Oddly enough, during this worldwide "experience" we've collectively been having...it's the Bolshoi that has racked up more positive points ( in my view) by releasing a number of free full length telecasts from their archives...I was most impressed with the Marco Spada with David Hallberg that I had never seen full length before. Royal did some but much less compellingly for my taste. Oh well, here's one vote for shifting the paradigm to be more respectful of recording / releasing for purchase seminal performances by a wider scope of artists. (If only I could get aerobically conditioned by getting on and off my soapbox:-)
Thank you dearest Pam waiting for this..... love when you explain the story
Thank you Karina for the encouraging words lol... I do NOT relish speaking in my videos and I am never completely happy with myself. But I make myself do it as sometimes there's just so much I want to say about something and I don't want to distract from Sergei (as if) with a bunch of captions or text all over the screen. So I very much appreciate your support. Thanks again!
Magnificent! Thank you for this (and ALL) other Polunin clips. Subscribed! 😍
Oh thank you Roberta!! How wonderful. I am so grateful. Thank you also for taking the time to write. I hope you will continue to do so. Where are you from? I am in Texas, and sending big hugs to you.
@@PamBoehmeSimon - Italian based in London, UK. Traditionally, I'm an Opera person, but saw Polunin soloing at the ROH. That's what got me into ballet... ❤
@@PamBoehmeSimon why not use the original music for Mayerling?
@@lyndahillyer5651 I knew I would be chopping the video clips to bits to build the story in a timely, yet concise manner. The original music would have been disjointed and chaotic broken up such as I was doing. So, to emphasize the mood, and for continuity, I decided to go with a "soundtrack" approach. I wanted the focus to be on the characters and the story and the "neutral" music lends itself nicely to compliment, yet not distract.
Fantastic question. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to ask.
Utterly spellbinding.
There are so many great dancers nowadays but no one even close to Sergei! His energy is shoot you from head to toes and you sitting, watching and feel paralyzed because don’t want miss thing. So sad that his commercial project won’t let us enjoy classical ballets, it is not same if you are not in a system anymore but to see how much he put in every performance let you think that we don’t want him to be burn to soon.. so much energy and health it takes!!
I can not agree with you more... this reply would be longer, but you've already said it all. Brilliant comment. Thanks very much for watching and writing. Your time and attention are most appreciated.
Yes- agree to all. Without a major ballet company behind him, Sergei is forced to do less- than- quality work. I’m sure he prefers being in charge, but his artistry has suffered. He is still at the age where he could be taking on major roles with the Bolshoi or the Royal, but I think he’s had his fill. He has said on many occasions that classical bores him. Must be too reminiscent of his sad childhood!
Crying
A very tragic story I think the suicide wasn't right.Polunin is obviously very talented in many facets and Mary o portrayed her role very well
The actual full length ballet "Mayerling" goes much further into Rudolf's mental issues, his affection for guns and gunplay, and the murder/suicide at the end is actually played out on stage/behind a curtain. I tried to soften my video a bit as I know I have young children who like to watch them and I'd prefer to let them keep thinking that "everything is beautiful at the ballet" until the world forces them to know that life isn't always like that. Thanks for writing. I appreciate your very thoughtful comment.
I so enjoy your comments Katharina.
I remember reading that he took drugs I think he was unbalanced and for that his life and Mary's was ended
I just saw this response, forgive my out of order replies please. You are correct. That alone could have caused it but he also had other possible culprits that could be blamed as well.
Disturbing.
