Yes, Karl was right about Lobsters... the only way they die is to be eaten or when their carapace (shell) becomes so large that they lack the musculature to actually remove their exoskeleton during molting, then they starve.

Yes. They don't have genetic deterioration like other creatures, therefore they don't age. Every new cell is just like the previous in lobsters.

the thing about Karl is, whenever 2 people are around him - they automatically assume the ‘Ricky/Steve’ role. Except the only people who are good at being Ricky and Steve, are Ricky and Steve.

Ricky and Steve have said multiple times on podcasts and interviews that he is not a comedian, he's not an actor, he's just a normal guy who is extremely funny without even trying. Comedians try to be funny, it's their job.

It's weird how the actual show itself uploads these even though literally nobody likes or watches these for the hosts, we just love Karl.
A lot of people just use Karl for views and money. Ricky takes his jokes and uses them in his stand up routines as if they were his own. Karl's way too kind for his own good.

I have been watching After Life, and some of Ricky's jokes and lines are either real things he has already mentioned on XFM, or monologues that sound suspiciously like something Karl would say. There is no doubt Ricky is good at what he does, but he seems to lack the creative imagination of many comedians.
OpenMusic comedy comes from real life mostly ..... it’s no different from sitcoms that are based on real people from the writers life .... Karl wouldn’t have had a single chance of being where he is now (pretty well known) without Ricky and Steve ... and I say that as somebody that wouldn’t listen to their XFM show without Karl on it

This reminds me of being 13. Knowing something that my friends don't know therefore they ridicule the entire concept.
The turtle story really just sums up Karl, he may not always think things through, and consequently does/says some ridiculous things, But it's all underpinned by empathy. He's just a genuinely decent bloke.

After listening to Karl talk about animals and insects endlessly on Xfm and have Ricky and Steve shout him down as if they’re experts, it’s nice to see Karl talk to an actual naturalist and bounce off of Steve Backshall.
They stated multiple times they would antagonize and disagree with Karl to get the best out of him. Ricky certainly could be a bit of a know-it-all to be sure, but it was mostly for their dynamic.
It was annoying though. Ricky would come out with the most ridiculous statements such as it's a well known fact that primates don't have opposable thumbs, when they do. So I agree with the OP. It didn't get the best out of Karl, it just made them look silly and interrupted this story telling.

People get attached to Karl, and lose sight of the fact that the three were best mates and chose to do hundreds of hours of material together. None of them are nearly as funny alone as they were in a group, with the aforementioned dynamic, in my opinion. So agree to disagree I suppose.

Karl's incredibly clever.. It's just the way his personality comes across and how it reflects on other people that make him look daft. Put him on a 'chat show' with a few professors and I'm sure you'd see a different side to him!

@@iconoptixx It is true, but not in the way you would expect. There is more than one way to skin a cat. In the same way there are ways to arrive at the truth, or the approximation of the truth other than through pure logic, which Karl lacks somewhat. Karl is very creative, imaginative, and intuitive, through that alone his 'hunches' lead him to some interesting and fairly accurate conclusions.
Someone like Ricky, who is logical and analytical, would need all the facts placed right in front of him before he made any conclusions. Ricky would struggle to connect dots in the absence of cold hard fact, whereas someone like Karl can use his intuition to connect dots in the absence of facts. It doesn't always lead to completely accurate conclusions, but it leads to fairly accurate conclusions and at a much faster rate than someone like Ricky. Being logical and analytical, 'clever', is very useful for certain fields, but it does have it's limitations.

When ever Karl speaks to people they always assume he's bullshitting and i have no idea why. People think he acts dumb but in reality hes pretty smart, just shows it in a different way that is quite amusing.

This is a good example to demonstrate how people deny information instinctively if they have never heard before. When you say something shocking, or unbelievable - we instinctively try to deny it. That's why you rationalise it with evidence and build upon previous knowledge that they have. Karl is quick to believe and less interested in details, hence he was unable to explain what type of lobster may be immortal and how they may remain immortal. He is more interested in the shock value and the moral of it, and the rest of them are interested in the rationale of it. Fascinating stuff!
Lobsters can die of diseases or being attacked etc but if everything was perfect, like if it was kept in a fish tank and fed and cared for etc, the lobster could live forever because it's DNA stays 'fresh' no matter the age. Essentially Aging does not affect lobsters like it does in humans or most mammals.
That’s not entirely true. As lobsters grow, they are more likely to die when molting. In older lobsters, molting ceases and their exoskeleton eventually degrades leading to death. However lobsters are biologically immortal, as in the rate of mortality due to senescence does not increase with age, just not immortal in the traditional sense. So clearly Karl took a piece of information and falsely extrapolated that lobsters can live forever. Pretty par for the course.

Karl was half-correct about Lobsters living forever, similar with crocodiles I believe. They dont die of old age, but diseases and injuries. In Lobsters it has an enzyme which stop cells from decaying when being re-grown.
That story with the immortal Jelly fish is literally what Karl was talking about on the Ricky Gervais show where When you die (at 75) you have a baby in you but it's you again as a baby haha
The thing about lobsters is half true. Lobster do tend to live long and the interesting part is that they continue to age continuously which isn’t normal to eukaryotic organisms. Most organisms quit aging at a certain point but lobsters tend to continuously age and can live centuries.
However, they do die naturally. Often due to disease and predation.
