I also I love South Africa. It is a country with a dark history but people have come together to build one of the most prosperous counties in Africa. It’s anthem is sung in Xhosa, Zulu, Sesotho, Afrikaans, and English.
Even if we disagree with a counties government we will always be one as a people. People everywhere have amazing things to share. I cannot wait for part 2.

    Hi, german here.
So I don't know what exactly was meant with ''do you sing it in english or german'' (1:45). Since it's the german national anthem it's sung in german.
And to the second question: Germany kinda kept it's anthem after WW2.
The ,,Deutschlandlied'' (song of/about Germany) was written waaaay before Germany was even a unified nation (if you didn't knew, a single unified german state didn't exist until 1871). Back when it was written Germany was split in many small kingdoms and duchies and so on. It was more like a war song, calling for a united german struggle against the French invaders (during the Napoleonic wars). When Germany was formed in 1871 it's first national anthem was ,,Heil dir im Siegerkranz (Hail you in/with the winner's wreath)'', which has the melody of ''god safe the King/Queen''. After WW1 the Weimar Republic (Germanys first attemt at democracy) adapted the Deutschlandlied, with all it's 3 stanzas. The first one is probably the most known one with ''Germany Germany above all'', which got ripped out of context and abused by the 'crazy moustache man' during WW2 for his propaganda. After WW2 West Germany first adopted all 3 stanzas again, but later got rid of the first 2. The first stanza had too many bad implications with what had ahppened during WW2 and the 2nd stanza was just not really fitting for a national anthem, so the German national anthem in only the 3rd stanza. Meanwhile East Germany wrote an entire new anthem after WW2, called ,,Auferstanden aus Ruinen (risen from ruins)''. But after Germanys reunnification 1990 there where many proposals of mixing the two anthems, for example the eastern lyrics with the western melody and vice versa. But in the end they just stuck with the original third stanza of the Deutschlandlied.
    I hope I could help ^^

The slavery bit in the Italian anthem is a bit complicated.
It says that "Victory" (the goddess and personification of victory) was created by God as a slave of Rome. So the personified concept of victory is the slave here.
Basically it just means that Italy is destined to be victorious.

For Türkish flag; Legend has it that the red on the flag is blood red and represents the spilled blood of martyrs. The image of the Turkish flag is formed with the crescent moon and a star reflected on these bloods at midnight. This legend is said to have taken place in the First Battle of Kosovo in 1389.
In the other hand, On the Turkish flag, the Crescent represents "Islam" and the Star represents "Turkishness". The red color represents the "blood" mixed with the soil. According to another view, it is said that crescent and star represents "Turkishness" from Central Asia and the red background represents "Homeland". It is known that the 8-pointed star used in the Turkish flag represents victory. The 5-pointed star, which was first used by Abdülmecid (31st Sultan of the Ottoman Empire )and is still used today, represents the human being. Almost all Turkish states in history have a crescent and star in the flag.

Italy has been a Republic since 1946 but was unified as a single kingdom in 1861 (that year is usually considered to be the founding of Italy). Before that there was different kingdoms, city states, duchies and the Papal states and most of it was controlled by other European monarchies or powerful merchant families. The unification process started after the Napoleonic era and is the reason the Italian flag looks almost the same as the French one.
About "La Marseillaise", France's anthem, it was written in 1792 during the revolution and after France declared war on Austria wich started the war of the first coalition against France. It became the symbol of the Revolution and of the Republic.

After all, people's tastes are different and you can't judge them. Everyone likes something different, so saying that one anthem is better (prettier?) than another doesn't make sense. Anthems have their historical and political justification. They were created in different eras and cultures. So it's not about catchy melodies, moving rhythm or crazy arrangements. It's not a Miss Beauty Contest. Tastes change, hymns remain, because they carry other associations and values than aesthetic ones.

Germany had the same national anthem during WWII, but with different lyrics (this was the old third verse). Serbia use the Cyrillic alphabet (the same as Russia), but speak Serbo-Croatian. "God Save the King (or Queen)" is the anthem of the United Kingdom, but not of other countries in the Commonwealth, all of which have their own anthems. And even within the UK, the four separate countries have their own anthems (England's "Jerusalem" and Wales's "Land of our Fathers" should both have been on this list!). South Africa's anthem is unique in that it combines two separate songs - the second half is basically the same tune as the Apartheid-era anthem but with new words. The message is that all parts of the country need to come together to make a new nation - and it works brilliantly. FWIW, I'm biased as a New Zealander, I feel our anthem should be on that list somewhere too!

This is a difficult topic because many people cannot separate a good song from politics and their own views and hate for others.
Clearly most of these songs have nothing to do with the modern world as they are older than most people alive.
As a Swede I would obviously say Sweden's the best. But it is kind of boring and generic.
I do like Denmark's however it is a good one.
Germany, France and Russia have very catchy songs that sticks.
As far as I remember Germany changed the lyrics after WW2 to be more downtoned.
The older lyrics are more powerful with " Germany above all others"

I'm not even French, but I have to say this: "Babe", "La Marseillaise" is from the 1800s. And if your issue with it is that it is a bellic anthem, I must ask: have you actually interpreted the words to "The Star-Spangled Banner" (which, by the way, is also from the 1800s)? What do you think it is about? "the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air" gives such a cozy friendly feeling to an anthem, doesn't it? At least there's no mention of blood and I guess that's what matters. How do you think most countries were/are born and is thus ingrained in their identity and national symbols? That's right, war.

Each country under the Commonwealth has its own independence and own anthems. In 1901 we became a federation, not fully seperated from Britain but able to govern itself.
I'm not French but from my studies it was around the French Revolution that you got the anthem from, so that's why it's so graphic.

There is kind of a myth behind the Turkish flag actually, it is said to have come from the reflection of the moon and stars reflection on our soilders blood. The red mostly symbolizes the blood spilled in our war of indepence

Islam is the dominant religion in Turkey. The moon and star are a religious motif, and the color red clearly symbolizes the blood we shed in the War of Independence.
