    Francis Pegahmagabow (March 9, 1891 - August 5, 1952) was a Canadian First Nations soldier, politician and activist. He was the most highly decorated Indigenous soldier in Canadian military history and the most effective sniper of the First World War. Three times awarded the Military Medal and seriously wounded, he was an expert marksman and scout, credited with killing 378 Germans and capturing 300 more. Later in life, he served as chief and a councillor for the Wasauksing First Nation, and as an activist and leader in several First Nations organizations.

    Lyrics
    Move between the lines, a soldier breaking the confines
    A force deployed from overseas, a war in foreign land await the eager recruits
    And in their midst, among the men, a soldier with a different past return to his roots
    Into battle, the gas has them pinned
    Then this soldier invoke the spirits of the wind
    Under fire, a ghost that roams the battlefield
    Move between the lines, a soldier breaking the confines
    Just another Man and rifle, a marksman and a scout revealed
    Makes his way from trench to trench alone, moving undetected
    And on the fields of Passchendaele, a guiding light for reinforcements finding their way
    And in the Battle of the Scarpe, bring ammo over no mans land and fire away
    In the battle, the gas had them pinned
    Pegahmagabow invoked the spirits of the wind
    Under fire, a ghost that roams the battlefield
    Move between the lines, a soldier breaking the confines
    Just another Man and rifle, a marksman and a scout revealed
    Makes his way from trench to trench alone, moving undetected
    Under fire, a ghost that
    Under fire, a ghost that roams the battlefield
    Move between the lines, a soldier breaking the confines
    Just another Man and rifle, a marksman and a scout revealed
    Makes his way from trench to trench alone, moving undetected
    Francis stayed and fought throughout the war, made his way until the end alive

    Dude, I was waiting for you to do this song. It's my favorite Sabaton song. There are not very many songs about us Native Americans and First Nations peoples contributing to the war efforts of Canada and the US. I, my father and other members of the rest of my family have served in the army, marines and air force. Brings a tear to my eye every time I hear this song.

    This man was a true legend, and I first learned about him through Sabaton. This is the music video he deserves. Yes the White Death was impressive, but I still consider Francis more impressive. To be able to do what he did in the hellscape, that was trench warfare of WW 1 and surviving, is fucking insane.

    • @impe04
      @impe04 Před 2 lety +3

      Those two scenarios were both hellish. Sure the battlefields of WW1 were absolutely terrifying, but so were the ones in WW2. Not to mention the fact how Finns were severely outnumbered, with bad logistics and literally no advantages expect the fact that Finnish soldiers knew the land they were fighting in. Your comment just sounds like you're neglecting the achievements of that Finnish sniper, and the hell he went through. Every soldier, no matter how much they achieved during those times, went through such harsh times that we can't even imagine.

    • @DuckAllMighty
      @DuckAllMighty Před 2 lety +5

      @@impe04 I did just say that the White Death was impressive, and yes the Finnish fought an uphill battle. But many of Simos kills were, where he laid in wait for his enemies to come into view in a semi flat snow covered forest with decent visibility and not under constant bombardment, gassing and mashine gun fire, also the Finnish made Mosins are considered high quality rifles, while Francis' Ross rifle was already considered outdated at the outbreak of WW1 and they where notorious for jamming, as they where not made for the conditions of WW1. There's a reason why Canada quickly changed to the British SMLE rifles. Also did Simo run through No Man's Land during a heavy enemy counter offensive armed only with a knife and pistol, killed an enemy mashine gun crew, took their ammo and ran back to his own trench, to deliver ammo to his own mashine guns to cover their retreat?

    This is an excellent music video. Probably the best for this song specifically. I really, really, really, like how you so starkly contrasted the differences between the visual surroundings of his life home in Canada, mid-northern Ontario specifically. And that of his life on the western front of The Great War. Perry Island truly is a beautiful place, and just the general land around that part of Georgian Bay.

    CO: "Why were you not at your post?!"
    Pegahmagabow: "I was scouting the German trenches, Sir."
    CO: "ALONE?! Do you honestly expect me to believe that?!"
    Pegahmagabow: (emptying German helmet full of German uniform buttons, rank insignia, and medals) "Yes." (starts laying out several German belts) "Though I can't wait to see Gerry try climbing over their trenches with their trousers around their ankles..."

      Basically all Québécois are at least 10% First Nations. Arcadian French colonist men outnumbered French women immigrants 20-1 for more than a generation in the early days, they HAD to take native brides, and got along splendidly with most tribes because of it. More French women came later to dilute the mixing but the legacy is a fixture now.

    FYI: Francis was one of Early Canadian history's most prolific serial killers before he signed up for war, purely for the license to shoot as many 'white people' as he wanted. The war got the killing out of him, and also brought him close enough to the white people of his home-land, that he returned home and fought for human rights in strictly peaceful means only. Such as sitting at the doors of Parliament and simply refusing to move until the laws and aid for his people which he was either requesting, or demanding, was delivered. He had made enough wealthy friends in Britain, and with his new title of 'War Hero', managed to gain a lot of sway and momentum in Canadian policy. It was him who won the Canadian First Nations their right to be known as Citizens of Canada with the right to vote. Sadly they still have not managed to win back any of the land they lost before the stupid 'Indian Reserve" thing we got going on. And yes, the First Nations were not even legally recognized as people, human fucking beings, before this guy came along and changed everything.
