I like how you marked the drive shaft to line it up properly when remounting it... then ignore the marks when remounting it.
Almost like it didn't really matter. Thanks for watching!
@@2carprosright all that matter is that it’s in phase, a lot of people seem to think it matters but the drive shaft is balanced by itself, not with the yokes
I noticed in your video when removing the driveshaft in the rear differential there was a black marker Mark
That was matched up from the U joint to the differential and you put it back on they were misaligned
I'm guessing this is from a previous time this driveline was off because you did not match it back up
It's always best to align the driveshaft back in the same position if possible
Yeah that is a really old trick that some people used back in the 70's. Today though newer vehicles it does not matter but it is a good practice! Thank you for watching!
Thanks for the video!! I watched a different video and only lubed my slip yoke. This did not fix the problem. Once I took it off again I filed the edges of the yoke so that they would not dig into the spline of the transfer case. This worked for me on my 2012 Ford F150 FX4 Supercrew. Thanks again.
Awesome! Glad we could help you out! Thanks for watching! :)
Super helpful. Thanks, now I gotta figure out how to extend yoke our shaft
You need a new longer drive shaft,. Thanks for watching!
@@2carpros thank you 👍🏼
you forgot to line up the mark on the bolt and flange, is that not important, but thanks for the video, it will make my job easier.
I notice your marks didn't line up on install.
why file the splines down?
Matt Jennings burs are rough, filing will make them smooth.
@@TheMoneyjuan thanks needed to know this too
What socket did you use?
Driveshaft are balanced and should be marked before removal and reinstalled in same location
In the olden days that was true but with the newer stuff I'm not so sure it matters. I want to make a video about it. Thanks for watching!
I noticed there was some leakage between the differential in the driveshaft is that a problem?
Need to line up marks on yoke to line on drive shaft. For balancing.
Was going to say the same. You're the only one that commented that knows this.
IS THIS THE SAME ON A 2 PIECE DRIVESHAFT????
The drive shaft was marked at one time with a black marker so it would be reinstalled the same way, which you didn't do. Prob not a big deal (says the transmission mechanic), but couldn't hurt to do it right.
I want to make a video about that. It definitely can't hurt to put it back on the way it came off. But I want to test and put it on "wrong" just so I can either prove or dis prove this myth everyone seems to believe. Thanks for watching!
if it has a unique rust profile and bumpy you can create runout if its not put back exacto.
other than that, if your diff flange and driveshaft rear flange are true then it wont matter as these are not balanced on the vehicle. they are built in a factory by dana corporation.
2CarPros, I'm a weekend warrior, the financial part of it is my biggest motivation, enjoy learning new tricks and tasks. What's the final answer, marking shaft-yoke relationship? Is it mortally important in today's rigs? Thanks.
On older cars and trucks it seemed to matter more but, on today's aluminum super light weight shafts it doesn't look like it matters. Thank you so much for watching!
I have a 2008 chevy suburban, is there an o dring that does in the inside of the rear of the transmission into the yoke. The weep hole of the yoke is leaking real bad.
I got a 2010 Ford explore sport trac I need to rebuild the rear drive shaft the parts that goes into the transfer case. What I need to know is will a jeep or Doge rebuild kit fit? Or the front rebuild kit fit? Because I cannot find a rebuild kit for the rear drive shaft. Without having to buy a complete rear drive shaft. So do you know if you can use the same kit?
Hey guys, great video. I do have one question, when filing the teeth of the spline... do you just file the outside of the the teeth or the entire teeth straight down into the spline as well? Just asking because it looks like you guys only filed the outside of the teeth, so I just wanted to be sure I follow thru with your technique.
would a bad slip yoke make a clunking sound when shifting from Park to Reverse?
Rikki Agana sounds like a bad u joint, you should check the rear joints closely.
Rikki Agana hi. No the repair here is becausee the slip joint is not greased from factory. They covered the splines in teflon coat so it will slide smooth. When it wears off you get bang taking off from a stop. There is a tsb from ford on this. For your problem. Id look at the u joints especially the one closest to the rearend. If its bad replace all of them
Hello @2CarPros. I have done the service however when reinstalling the markings I made wore off and am unsure if I reinstalled correctly. What should I look or feel for? How should I go about correcting it?
why are you using gm ac delco grease? why not motorcraft blue grease?
grease is pretty much grease
Ok I'm having a problem with my 2 piece drive shaft. The rear drive shaft won't go on I don't know what's wrong
Shouldn't the bolts be torqued to 76'#'s ? I'm getting ready to lube mine, change the transfer case oil, and possibly change the U-joints. The U-joints seem good, but they have 237,000 miles on them. Would you change them since you were pulling the drive shaft anyways even if they seem excellent? I have developed a clunk bang, that's why I'm lubing the slip yoke.
Same silicon grease no matter if you have 2wd or 4wd? I'm asking because I'm not sure if the trans fluid comes in contact with the shaft on the 2wd models. Thanks
What is the metal ring that’s around the yoke for?
This might sound like a dumb question after reading some of the questions people asked lol, but anyways wouldn't it be better to just buy a new slip yoke that wouldn't require you to grease it every few thousand miles? I looked online and I cant find one on auto zone or oriellys or anywhere like that. The only places that have them are random sites I've never heard of, and they all seem to be different. My 2011 f150 is doing the slip bump everytime I accelerate from a stop and most of the time when I come to a stop. I just bought the truck a little less than 4 months ago so I'm all for buying a new part so I dont have to worry about taking the driveshaft out every oil change. So if I can replace it then I wanna do that.
Honestly, I would worry the new driveshaft would do the same exact thing. Thanks for watching!
IS THERE A CERTAIN WAY TO REINSTALL THE DRIVE SHAFT? TO MAKE SURE IT IS ALIGNED OR BALANCED CORRECTLY WITHOUT MARKING IT.
Heres my problem 2011 F 150 XLT 4x4 5.0...When moving slow in a parking lot and letting off the gas then gently giving it some gas Im getting a slam from what seems to me to be the drive shaft, its not happening at all from stop lights or normal acceleration only coasting and giving it a little gas like it has some play in it, what does this sound like and is it something a average guy can fix or does this require a professional? Thanks Joey
I had a 2011 F150 Ecoboost and I had the same problem until I did this slip yoke service. This is how I fixed it. Took a few tries but it got done. I think it might have a recall for it too check it out. Thanks for watching!
Drive shaft center support or driveshaft carrier bearing
Thank You.
@@lostnavigating7595 how do you know? I'm not saying your wrong, just want to know if you have facts. It's hard taking advice from people online
Thank you
Like how you're torque spec is, "make sure these bolts are nice and snug"
Yes it is. Almost never actually need a torque wrench. Thanks for watching!
I’ve had two mechanics now tell me that the slip yoke gets lubricated by the transfer case. Neither want to do this procedure for me. The noise and slipping is clearly in the back and its an issue you can read about all over the internet. But two in a row that don’t want to do it. One of them owns a ford and said his has been doing it for a long time and he just deals with it lol. I wish i could find someone local who would do it
This is the fix. I'm not sure why they wouldn't want to help you out. Guess they don't like money? Thanks for watching!
@@2carpros Yea man, the last thing he said is he wasn’t comfortable with it. I wonder if they’re worried about contamination with the transfer case oil? Thoughts? And you’re welcome i really appreciate the help
It’s it bad if I put the slip yoke backwards
Don't forget to chock the tires
Man, you ain't kidding.
Hello! Thanks for the video. I noticed that one of the splines is wider than the others (it looks flat). what's that for? Should it be aligned with the transmission shaft ?
It’s a master spline so yes there should be a similar one on trans side so you know where to line up and put in
What kind of file is used, my 99 explorer make noises while moving slow or going up hill & what kind of oil to put on
A petafile
nice and snug? the Ford manual says 83 ft/lbs.
torque adapter.
Yes, I would call that nice and snug. Jeeez. Thanks for watching!
How often should this be service? not having problems yet.
Don't fix what isn't broken. Ford was known for this issue on this Gen F150. So some t'ward the end of it's life cycle got a coating that fixed it while the rest have to do this service.
Agreed, only reason I watched this video was because I was experiencing the bump in my truck. Lubed, but did not file splines. Smooth as silk now. Like butter. Feels like a completely different truck.
I'm experiencing engine knock or clunk when accelerating from a full stop on my 2010 F-150. Will greasing the slip yoke help? Thanks
I had the same exact thing happening to my truck. Hence why the video is here lol mine would do it on take off and stopping it just feels like a big clunk and a hesitation. This fixed my truck and I hope it does yours as well. So I lubed the slip yoke every oil change. A pain yes, but still a nice truck.
Where would I purchase that angled file? Does that type of file have a name?
is it important to use only that type of grease and is it OK to file the inside of the spline.
It is good to use a silicone based grease and yes you can
CARLOS GONZALEZ The grease Fords sells and recommends is a Teflon based grease
how bad does it need to be? i think im having this problem but there isnt any audible clunk or huge slippage feel. just seems like maybe i drive over 2-3 rocks when i start moving forward.
It really feels like a big build up then a big bump. You might have something else going on. Thanks for watchng!
@@2carpros thanks for the reply. I think I'm just paranoid at how the truck feels because I haven't owned one in 5yrs. Been driving sports cars.
Hello just out of curiosity but does pretty well any grease work? I’m taking my driveshaft off in the morning to do this but wanna make sure some of the stuff kicking in the garage will be fine
I'd go with a synthetic grease like I showed in the video. Something that has decent durability.
Been looking for a driveshaft slip yoke for my 1991 f250 4wd any suggestions please
Check out LQK they have older model stuff like that. Thanks for watching!
could you tell me some of the symptoms that this creates if this is a problem is it possible that it could cause a weird feeling under tour at higher RPMs or speeds
Sure! The truck will shudder or hesitate on acceleration or stopping. I'm not sure if this will solve your problem. But I know it won't hurt to try!
My 2010 Explorer clunks as if I've been rear ended when I come to a slow stop like at a stoplight or stop sign. Would you recommend I try this as a first action? What would be a reasonable amount for a shop to charge me to do this if I didn't want to do it myself? I took my SUV to Goodyear for a quote for getting this clunk fixed, and they said I needed a new transfer case in the ballpark of $3100 for parts and labor. Not an option at this time.
Yeah I would definitely try this. As far as a shop doing this for you it shouldn't be more than $130. It is really easy and there is no parts cost just a light amount of labor. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the prompt and super helpful response! I'm moving a few states over in a couple of days, so I'll try to get my local mechanic to knock this out for me before I go. $130 would be well worth it to have peace of mind while driving that long distance.
it was good
Thank you so much for watching!
So was this a good fix? I have to grease my splines about once a month! I fixed the clunk by the racquetball method (yes it worked) but the splines bind up so bad once they go dry. It makes sense that widening the splines by filing them to alleviate the bind. Ford told me i was nuts and that a simple grease job would fix the problem forever. Wrong.
is this to stop the pop when u 1st take off? because when I take off it pops then is fine only does it when I take of hard from a dead stop, everything is good under truck .
I think I'm having this issue with my Grand Marquis.
DOES IT MATTER WHICH WAY IT GOES BACK ON?
It only goes in one way
I love how you turned a 1.25 minute video into a 5 minute video for no reason other than to generate more money...
Ridiculous.
3:40 massss lengua
Like how you say 2011-2014 yet ford hasn't change the driveshaft design since like the 70s lol
If I say anything else the "technically correct" people come out of the woodworks and are very mean. Thanks for watching!
You should have cleaned off the rust.
You totally didnt re align the bolt with the black mark you made yo.
And yet it was totally fine. I really want to make a video about that. Thanks for watching!
This was not help at all, because I have a 2011 F-150 with a split drive shaft. This looks like a single piece drive shaft.
It’s pretty much the same thing you just go from rear dif detach the four bolts holding in driveshaft and slip the shaft out of the yolk it’s a two piece but same thing
