  • Signature Entertainment presents The Auschwitz Escape on Digital Platforms 14th May & DVD 24th May.
Slovakia's Oscar submission for best international film tells the true story of two Auschwitz prisoners (Noel Czuczor and Peter Ondrejicka) who escaped hell and provided a rare first-hand and shocking report of genocide at the camp. After meticulous planning and with the help and resilience of their fellow prisoners, they manage to escape. While the inmates they had left behind courageously stand their ground against the Nazi camp officers, the two men are driven to survive by the hope that their evidence could save lives. Emaciated and hurt, they make their way through the rugged mountains back to Slovakia ready to share their horrific report to the United States Red Cross. Gripping and harrowing at every turn, The Auschwitz Escape honours the power of truth in a world that might not be ready to hear it.
Also starring John Hannah (Four Weddings and a Funeral) as Warren, a British representative of the Red Cross. The Auschwitz Escape was written and directed by Peter Bebjak, with additional writing credits for Tomás Bombík and Jozef Pastéka, inspired by the novel What Dante Did Not See by Alfred Wetzler.

I want to see this. It's disgusting to realize that people tend to disbelief the stories of the survivors... Spreading the word in this way is the best thing we can do.

Yeah I know, these stories are real. I met a survivor of the Holocaust at a anti semrtism rally I went to with my church. The guy lived in Belgium and came to America at 13 years old and later served in the marine Corp. My great grandfather was not a Holocaust survivor. But he was in the Italian army I believe from what I was told by my family. And he was captured by Hitler and was a barber for him. And he made a friendship with one of Hitler's right hand man. And the guy told him all the secrets to get away and when destruction was gonna come to where he was. So he was able to escape and he came to America. Had that man not had a heart for my great grandfather I wouldn't be here today.

Yup..."Man's inhumanity to man" and it happens to this day. Maybe not this severe or widespread but...we seem to be slowly heading in that direction again. And the downplay of this insanity that actually happened.

Aha, the Slovakian movie is being [originally] called THE MESSAGE. As local Polish resistance decided the first messengers to Suisse/the Holly See/the USA embassy in the Switzerland/Turkey @ Pope being Slovak-speaking voluteers like Vrba and Wetzler. The pope´s ambasador to Slovakia had reported to the president of Slowakei - Dr Josef Tiso - and he just couln´t believe in this report, writing on the papers: AD ACTA... The same thing as you, the Westerners, couldn´t believe what the Ukronazis had madE to 14-thousand Ruthenian-speakers back in 2014-16 in €astern Ukraine.

This movie, based on a partially fictionalized story by Alfred Wetzler has much misinformation in it. If you want to watch it out of interest, go ahead, but understand that many things that happen in this movie did not, in fact, happen in real life. Tomorrow, by the way, April 7, will be 79 years since Vrba and Wetzler hid in the lumber pile and Monday the 10th, will be the Anniversary of when they actually escaped. It took them 11 days to get to the border of Slovakia and another 4 days to get to Zilina, where they spoke to Jewish leaders. I highly recommend reading I Escaped from Auschwitz by Rudolf Vrba. Riveting reading!

I am reading The Escape Artist by Jonathan Freedland which is an account of Vrba's escape from Auschwitz as well as Wetzler's escape along with Vrba. It sounds like Wetzler wrote a book that is not entirely accurate. Is that what you are saying? I will have to look into the book by Vrba.

@@NJcruiser Yes Wetzler wrote a fictionalized book about the escape under the name of Josef Lanik. Some of the story, attributed to Vrba and Wetzler, was lifted from the experiences of Mordowicz and Rosin who escaped four weeks later. Vrba's original book, now called I Escaped from Auschwitz, told in the first person was recently re-published.
