  • Scroll saw Blades, Pegas blades for hardwood.
In this video we explore the best options when it comes to Pegas scroll saw blades when working in hardwood. We put a variety of Pegas scroll saw blades through a simple test to see the ones that can cut hardwood the most effectively.
Finding the best scroll saw blade can be the difference between success when it comes to scroll saw projects. The idea of this video demonstration is to share our thoughts on which Pegas scroll saw blades we believe are most suitable for working in hardwood.

Hi Stephen, thanks for the positive feedback. Hope the Niqua speed blades work well for you. Make sure they are definitely Niqua Speed before you buy. Used others like Niqua Fix blades and they were no where near as good.

A big thumbs up for the testing of the Pegas blades. I've been wondering about the modified geometry blade. My go to blade is the Flying Dutchman #5 reverse tooth for most cuts, but I do have #02 to #9. All reverse tooth.I also have their reverse tooth spiral blades . I don't like spiral blades, lot of cleanup. I do have their puzzle blades too, but haven't used them yet. I cut both softwood and hardwood. Plus I cut Baltic Birch Plywood. So I wasn't sure what to start with. I do some fretwork, mostly simple stuff. I will be concentrating mostly on whirligigs that I have designed my own patterns for, but I will be cutting more hardwood for puzzles. I also will start cutting hardwood for carving projects that I want to learn to do over next winter. I can learn to do carving in the house next winter when I have my shop closed. I'll cut ahead all the projects I can this summer. Then I can paint, assemble, or carve during our long winter. Thanks for the Pegas info! Take care!

Hi Michael, great to hear from you and thanks for the positive feedback on the video. I have another one coming up on a few of the flying dutchman blades too. More difficult to get hold of here but for me, I enjoyed working with the flying dutchman blades more than the pegas blades. I also agree with you that spiral blades are not my preference. Again though, if I had to choose one type of spiral blade it would be the flying dutchman ones.

Hi I am a deaf person and have tried to follow your narrative about the different blade and uses.
The one I'm I interested is either the Pegas No 9 or the No 7 which I think you refered to as "Pagas Modified Geomity" Do you supply these if not where can I obtain them.
    Best regards Norman

      Hi Norman,
Thank you for getting in touch. I bought Pegas modified geometry blades through Axminster tools here in the UK. I personally prefer the Niqua speed number 9 reverse tooth blades and buy these directly from the factory in Germany.

I placed my order from Axminster yesterday and being delivered today, great service from them. When watching videos I always use subtitles and the Name “Niqua” came up with lots of different spelling. This is a huge problem with auto-generated subtitle.
Guess what? I’m going to order some Niqua No 9 because I’ve now got correct spelling, thank you Dai.

Very informative thanks. What would you recommend for a novice using soft wood

    • @DailovespoonsThomas
      @DailovespoonsThomas  Před 2 lety

      Hi Cindy,
Great to hear from you. Depends on the thickness of the soft wood. My favourite blades are reverse tooth blades. I work mainly with the Niqua speed number 9 reverse tooth blades. I am working in half inch thick hardwood though. Flying dutchman reverse tooth blades are great too, just more difficult to get hold of for ourselves here in the UK. The Pegas version is also very good but tends to slip in the blade holder more. For soft wood, depending on the thickness a lower number reverse tooth blade (3 to 7) might be more appropriate to get a finer finish.

I can only find Pegas blades in my country so I have to use them. They are better than the Makita or other blades because there's basically no variety and they are all pinned blades and big. I was using them on 9mm hardwood but I didn't try stack cutting them yet, only on soft woods where they do a nice job. I managed to find Olson's spiral blades and I will try them out later.

My go to blades these days are exclusively Pegas, mainly #3 and #5 reverse tooth for the type of cutting I do. I have tried Niqua blades but find them slower to cut than Pegas. I have also tried Flying Dutchman blades but found them to be the worst blades I have ever used. They cannot be tensioned properly and stretch so far that eventually they just snap! Not what you want in the middle of a long stack cut. Also, here in the UK we have to pay import taxes and VAT on them which pretty much doubles the purchase price!

Hi, great to hear from you and thanks for sharing your own experiences. I think blades are the most debated and such an important part of scroll sawing. So important to find the blade that suit you best and works best for the work you do. Just out of interest, what scroll saw do you use? It would be interesting to know if certain scroll saws suit certain machines better.

@@DailovespoonsThomas Hello, thank you for replying. The scroll saw that I use is an Excalibur EX21, now known as the Axminster Trade AT535 I think. I know that Flying Dutchman blades are regularly used with these saws especially in the US. If I remember correctly, at the time I bought my last batch of Flying Dutchman blades there was a question over the quality of them with reports of them regularly snapping in use and wandering off line. I think they had not been properly hardened or heat treated and they got through to being sold worldwide, and when you are ordering from another country you have no control over what is sent to you. It prompted a lot of people, me included to never buy them again and stick with Pegas blades, which for me work reliably for everything I do. I still have a load of Flying Dutchman blades that I will now never use but would feel guilty about passing on due to how bad I think they are!!

@@redditchscroller7049 thanks for getting back to me. A similar thing happened years ago with the Niqua blades we use. There was a bad batch. We found a solution to that problem though. We would put the blades on top of the wood burner, heat them up for 10 minutes and use them and they were fine. We bought them off hegner Uk and in fairness they also sent a replacement pack so we did well from it.

Great video as always I think I have said this before to me blades aren’t as good as they were 30-35 years ago for years I used a No. 7 BLITZ Blade from Germany my local supplier close I started using Olson Blades I have tried about every blade there is over the years depending on what I cut I use No. 3 up to a No. 9 an have over time used every size I think but so many brands I tried aren’t good at all I use to buy by the Gross but I did try OnLine Premium Scroll Saw Blades Platinum Plus an they cut a little slow but the finish is really good I don’t run production any more so speed doesn’t matter as much.
Sorry for the long comment one last thing Pègas isn’t my blade of choice they are good but blade slipping is a problem

Just found the online shop for Niqua blades in Germany so hopefully that will be a great contact. It has become difficult to get hold of them here in the UK. Flying dutchman blades are another we enjoy using but we can only find sellers in the USA, nothing here in the UK.

Niqua Speed number 9 reverse tooth blade or the Niqua Pebecco number 9 reverse tooth blade. The Niqua Speed is fine up to about 25mm but anything thicker I prefer the Niqua Pebecco. Pegas do their own version of a number 9 reverse tooth blade too.
