The BEST Scroll Saw Blade to Use | The Ultimate Saw Blade Test

  • There are so many scroll saw blades to choose from that it makes it difficult to know what the differences truly are between the variations. I conducted a test of the most common types of scroll saw blades in order to determine for myself which blade is best.
My test is completely subjective because I’m a human being. Shocking, I know. But as a human, I have to use the blade and interpret the results. All blades were new when I used them. They were installed correctly into the saw. They were used to cut the same pattern on the same material. However, there are always going to be variables to account for when a person is using a blade. If my test resulted in your favorite blade not performing well it does not mean that you are using a bad blade, just like it does not mean I do not know how to use the blade. It simply means that you found the best blade for you on your projects.

I tested the blades by cutting 1/4” thick poplar, 1/4" thick plywood, and 1/8” thick acrylic. I used a new blade for each material. The following blades were tested:
    • Pegas Reverse skip tooth blade - amzn.to/3CSBeMc
    • Pegas Double skip reverse tooth blade - amzn.to/3B5WME2
    • Pegas Modified geometry blade - amzn.to/3cFfE3j

Spiral blades require much experience. A skilled person can make the spiral blade look like childs play. Just because you had trouble with the spiral blade does not mean it's a terrible blade, it means you do not have enough experience.

I want to pick up a #5 crown tooth blade and see how it performs. It's hard not to love the quality of cut.

Interesting experiment, Billy. I don't do that much scroll sawing but if I ever get into it more, I'm going to refer back to this video as a starting point.

Hopefully it can be of some help to people. I know it certainly helped me by allowing me to experience so many different blades.

Good and fair tests. It seems that the acrylic brought scores down for some of the otherwise good scoring blades. For me I think I'd try to narrow down the best for wood individually and the best for plywood individually (or one that best suits both), and then a separate for acrylic if need be. I pretty much only go with whatever crappy Bosch blades I can pick up at Lowes, which aren't great but they do in a pinch for my infrequent scrollsaw needs. Require a lot of cleanup work though and don't last that long.

I'd like to do more testing on specific woods that I use often. There are several ways to go about it.

Forgive me if I missed it as I just found your channel, BUT could you try using an old vinyl record and see how that goes ????

Very informative for a rookie - have seen several videos on blades and this with the comparison and different goods was very interesting - Thank you very, very much - I might never get the skill to use Spiral blades, so now I know to wait with those :D 🪚🛠🪛✂
