    Markiplier is a man who owns 5 ovens.
    MattKC is a guy who owns 8 total xboxes.
    MattKC could win the duel because of his higher ammo but Markiplier's ammo, while not in as large of a supply, is heavier and therefore deals more damage. It's a matter of who can throw faster.

    1.6 isn't worthless. It can still be soft modded. And if you rebuild the LPC (trivial) you can install most modchips. I've got two 1.6 with Aladdin modchips. Both recapped and supercap replaced. The OG Xbox is an amazing console even today.

    3:50 There was a huge "recall" back in the day because of this issue, though I think Microsoft mostly just sent out little devices that could detect if there was a bad power connection to the Xbox and shut it down, and only then would you get it warranty replaced. As others have said the PSU is probably still working fine and just needs to be resoldered :)

    3:50 That's probably just a bad solder joint. Especially if they used low quality solder and the last owner plugged and unplugged the power cord, that probably started cracking the solder joint and having a loose connection. The PSU probably still works, it just needs a reflow of the solder joint with lots of flux.

    I remembered around 2018 when many of the city garage sales have the original xbox consoles on sale for $5 each. People just wanted to get rid of them because they were bulky and the controllers were bulky. I didn't mind picking them all up.
    The ones that powered up and read game discs I turned around and sold them at eBay and Amazon. The ones that does not power on, I swapped with another parts console and if it able to read disc then sell that. The disc tray coming out issue or cd reading issue is usually the cd rubber band is too old and just replace with another for $1.
    Learned so much by buying these and trying to fix them. Even for $10 it is a good learning experience. In your case I would ask him what is the best price he can do for all 6. Most of the time can get them for $50 or even $40, which will make the deal even sweeter. If not no loss and at $60 still a great price.

    This wasn't recent, but many years ago, I bought three older consoles off of someone on Craigslist. It was a PS1, PS2, and Dreamcast, and all for only $20. Most of them even came with cords and at least one controller.
    - The PS1 turned on and ran just fine, but controller port 1 didn't seem to work. Cleaning it did the trick though. Weirdly, the spindle was missing those... thingies (teeth?) to grip the disc, but a little tape around it did the trick. Still works great to this day!
    - The Dreamcast worked... except controller port 1 again. Cleaning it also did the trick. That's all it took.
    - The PS2... it took some work. The controller ports all worked this time, but it wouldn't even turn on at first. Giving it a big ol' cleaning did the trick, but the disc drive was really faulty (it'd only sometimes successfully read a disc, and even then, it often took really long). Fortunately, it came with that... modem thingy on the back (I'm so good with technical terms), so I was able to install a Homebrew launcher on the memory card and run my games off the hard drive. I wish I knew how to properly fix the disc drive, but it's no biggie. Plus, one of the loaders lets me use my wireless PS3 controller, so that's pretty convenient!
    And it's a good thing I can do that, too; the official PS2 controller that came with it was in horrid condition. The plastic was cracked and... I've no idea why, but the left analogue stick worked fine until I pressed down on L3, and then it'd suddenly no longer get the full range. I had to unplug & replug it back in to get it to work right again. I had no idea how to fix this, until one day I discovered that pressing against the underside of the board (particularly those silver soldered pins) would actually stop it from messing up. I've no idea why, but pressing L3 again after that no longer messed it up. I placed a thin piece of plastic on the inside of the controller to keep some pressure on those pins, and thus the controller finally started working right! Or rather... it did, until about a year later, anyway. Suddenly, the buttons stopped working and the controller wouldn't stop vibrating, regardless of many times I unplugged and replugged it back in. If I had your smarts, I probably could've saved it... alas, I had no idea what to do, so I ended up throwing it away.

    Re arcing broken plug, I don't think the arcing caused the connector to come loose, I expect the connector took a knock and broke the pads, and that's what caused the arcing and burning

    I had something super similar happen to my power supply in my original Xbox. I used to take that thing with my everywhere for LANs, so the plug was constantly being pushed in and pulled out. I had the same issue where the power plug had been ripped off the pad and put a giant scorch mark and would spark when plugging in it. I took the power supply to a local Jaycar Electronics store and the guy behind the counter very helpfully showed me where I should create a bridge with some copper wire. It ended up working and I think the same Xbox is still working today, although if it is I need to replace all the caps.

    Try replacing the 5 CPU filter caps, even if they don't look bad they can cause issues with boot looping, have had it on multiple occasions now!

    I remember when my dad accidentally bought a car. the car was "too cheap" on ebay. So he made a bid on it hoping to up the price to the final buyer. (why would you care if you don't want it). No one else bid on it. He won it. Did nothing with it and eventually sold it. The car he did intend to buy he barely touched. Eventually had it professionally restored. Over the years I think he probably spent about 30-40k on it for a car he rarely drives because it's a "classic".

    Controversial take but I think one (small) reason the Xbox does less well is because the naming conventions are insane.

    I'm curious, what's worthless about 1.6 models? I've got one (had it since I was a kid, it even has homebrew I screwed around with a lot back then - dunno the method used to do that, though...) and I figured it was the best case scenario since the time capacitors in these generally don't leak.
    Edit - watched the rest of the video like I should've - That just makes me more interested in knowing why a hardmod is more beneficial compared to whatever softmod mine has.

    • @nhand42
      @nhand42 Před 3 měsíci +3

      Two cons with the 1.6. You can't do a flashmod (no TSOP flash) and Microsoft removed the LPC traces from the motherboard to thwart hardmods. But the LPC rebuild is trivial so you can still hardmod. And you can always softmod.

    • @nickolaswilcox425

      @@nhand42 theres an extra problem, and realistically the real reason modders hate it, the xcalibur video encoder, its bugged, certain video modes just dont work properly
      just being unflashable isnt much of a deterrent but bugged video modes really pisses off people who put any value into visual quality

    Awesome deal, I picked up a pair of OGs last year for £20 and they were both modded, one with an Aladdin and one with an X2.6 which is rare to see here now, also picked up 6 360s and another 4 OGs at one point with a "free" PS3 thrown in for good measure all for repairs, it's all good fun :)
    That 1.0 has the infamous Foxlink PSU which has no strap on the power socket. The only thing holding that sucker in is the solder joints which fail under stress of plugging/unplugging the console until eventually, it arcs and does what you've seen. Rather than recall and replace, Microsoft sent out a letter to everyone known to own a 1.0 and offered a free trip protection cable as a "patch".
    The fact it's now FRAGing is likely corroded traces on the very bottom of the board that run from around the clock cap area right across the board, they're super thin traces and corrode easily when cap goo goes everywhere, sometimes it looks like a tiny spec of dirt on the board.

  • @Kraaketaer
    @Kraaketaer Před 3 měsíci

    That PSU issue looks like a dry/cracked solder joint - probably exacerbated by the force applied to the power plug being inserted and removed. That's why it's sparking - because it isn't making proper contact. I've seen that issue on Xbox PSUs before at least. It's unlikely that this would damage anything much further down the line, but it can definitely damage the PSU PCB and surrounding components. It is of course possible that the constant voltage spikes (or just heat from the PCB) fried something else in the PSU that in turn killed something on the motherboard, which would be rather tricky to track down (though hunting for shorts, injecting voltage and looking for hot spots, and tracing voltages across the motherboard to see if they suddenly disappear somewhere tends to all be useful methods).

    hmm, out of curiosity, couldn't you access the LPC bus on the broken xbox and connect something like a BIOS POST card to it (There's a youtube video on a DIY BIOS POST card using a raspberry pi pico)? Maybe that can give a more precise error message. Also it'd just be interesting to see if that would even work on an xbox

    Lol that is exactly how I got my set of 3 OG Xboxes. Went in to a local retro game shop, needed og xbox parts, shop offered me multiple units of unknown condition at $10/ea. They surprisingly all worked so I used them to fix my xbox and now I have plenty of parts.

    I find this quite interesting and actually am curious how often stuff like this comes up. Seeing OG Xbox's for $10 isn't exactly uncommon where I live in the UK. You can frequently go to second hand shops and see, 10, 20 Wii's all the time all for about £3-£6 depending on condition (about $4-8). They all work, as well.
    Out of curiousity, how much do you find consoles for? I've bought loads of them but never ever bothered to make profit off them, currently having 27 Wii's (it was also an accident...)
