Octavia Butler’s big goals: get millions to read her books and change the world. She succeeded.

- Before the word Afrofuturism even existed, Octavia Butler was writing about it. Before climate change was considered a crisis, Butler was writing about it. Before our country threatened to slide towards autocracy, there she was. Butler is rightfully considered one of the most important voices of the past 100 years. Her magnum opus, "Kindred," tells the story of Dana -- a Black writer living happily with her white husband in 1976 Los Angeles suddenly taken back in time to antebellum Maryland where she discovers two of her ancestors -- the spoiled son a white slaveholder, and a young enslaved woman. “Kindred” is equal parts historical fiction, science fiction, and a blistering commentary on the generational consequences of slavery. Award-winning authors and editors Nisi Shawl, a friend of Butler, and Sheree Renée Thomas, student of the icon and the recent winner of the 2023 Octavia E. Butler award, join the Velshi Banned Book Club to reflect on ‘Kindred’ and Butler’s legacy.

Octavia was sci-fi genius. Love her work.
Thank you for covering her!
I love Octavia Butler. Thank you for this segment.
I've been a fan of hers since finding one of her books in an Indiana public library back in the 1990s. The worldbuilding, characters, themes. One of the best writers of the past century.
Thank you for this enlightening report Ali! What a great discussion and panel!! 👍
I'm both in shock and in awe of her writings. Her books are opening eyes and minds.
Dawn was a great book, and unforgetable, and the other 2 in the series were good too. Crazy Sci Fi. She was an interesting person and way ahead of her time.
I've never heard of Octavia Butler before so I'm so thankful for this report and to you, Ali, for the introduction. "Kindred" sounds interesting, fascinating and insightful and I can't wait to get a copy of it! Keep these book recommendations coming!!
I highly recommend her Parable books
A great story!
Amazing writing and mind... She would be shocked to see how America has changed, and not for the better.
Just got a copy of "Parable of the Talents" looking forward to reading it.
Hope you started with "Parable of The Sower " 😊
Thank you for the great suggestion.I now know what book to check out next library visit.
Fascinating!
VELSHi, you truly are, ONE OF THE ✨️👤RiGHTEOUS❕️✌️ THANK Y😎U, FOR BEiNG.
Thank you Ms. Butler. I'm going to help spread the word about your book and tell everyone in my DEI training class next week. 💙💙
🤣🤣🤣 DEI (democrat enraged indoctrination).
DEi 😂😂🤮🤮
Excellent interview!!
I just bought the book, thank you for your reference and advice.
So if you just bought the book, it's not actually banned. Thank you for helping prove that Velshi's "banned book club" is a load of crap.
One of my favorite authors❤
Kindred is one of my favorite books. I have reread it over and over.
As an Australian I found Octavia's short stories really interesting - I will have to get "Kindred".
One of sci-fi' absolute BEST!💕💕🕊
Terrific piece!! 👏
I have that book and it is scary, enlightening and amazing!
I love this book.
Awareness is what Rosa Park taught us,she pave the row to the front seat...
A prophet.
Saying a book is inappropriate for children is not the same as saying it's banned. A bigger issue is how MSDNC got rid of Mehdi Hasan for being critical of a foreign war.
Mehdi is still on MSNBC, but he's often on several other stations, as well as writing in magazines and newspapers.
@@elainedaprano9130 He officially left a week or so ago. During the war, they took him off the air (but kept all their Jewish anchors on). They didn't fire him- they demoted him and hid him from the pubic view. Because he was Muslim. It's effed up. This network is pureEvil
Check the dehumanizing video of Mehdi Hasan saying that all non Muslims are animals. As in livestock. Because Mehdi was a Muslim and a Liberal, he received a free pass on his obvious hate speech. Until Oct 7th that is. His hate speech finally caught up with him. I say good riddance.
First time hearing of her
there will be no egyptian woman govern Rome
Never heard of her.
Me neither
All fiction.
Use the money to fix the inner cities.
What money?
@@jameswamba4338 From book sales.
Trump should use some money to fix Appalachia oh yea he is broke.
@@DarkNJuju They don't have the violence the inner cities do.
@@kennyc6597 Yes they do. It just doesnt make the news because well that doesnt fit your narrative. But I do hope they continue to support their local drug dealer

No one actually believes that you have read any of her books.
and they're not actually banned.
Not really. They just expose the fragility of a few.
At least children in Baltimore can't read
And here's another prize for going the extra mile and liking your own comments 🌟
@@jameswamba4338 I dont get it. If you think someone is going to appericate your ideas why like it yourself?
What is this garbage?
That's what your mom said after you slid out.
@@FGP_ProAt least they have one that doesn't require a leash. Something you can't say. 🤷
@@keepingit8797 So, they have one doesn't require a leash and one or more that does? Good for them, at least they have one. You're right, I cannot say that. None of mine require leashes. But, at least, I can say that my mom has a son who knows how to write a complete sentence that makes sense. You can't say that.

All of Velshi's "banned books" can be legally printed, legally distributed, legally sold, and legally purchased in the USA = not actually banned.
You've said this several times in these comments. Here's a prize 🌟
It is a book tax. Poor people will have their reading selection limited while the rich will not.
@@DarkNJuju so the book isn't actually banned. Thanks for helping me make my point.
@@Sturmavk Then removing the bible isnt banning it. Just removing it?
@@Sturmavk Then we should remove the bible from the schools and public libraries. Now that isnt banning it. Just removing it. Thank you for helping me understand how to remove the bible from the public libraries.
