Unboxing and Firing 1990's Cabela Black Powder Hawken Muzzleloader in .54 caliber

  • After firing small cannons, I got the itch to fire a classic blackpowder cap and ball style muzzleloader so I took an old 1990s box that has been in storage for years and fed it the new Pyrodex RS that I had been using in cannons.
The video covers unboxing, assembly, loading procedures, grouping of shots, and cleaning.
Range time was slow. Loading took a long time and the barrel fowled very quickly. Recoil was stout but not unpleasant because it mostly rolled up instead of a quick jerky punch. A few people on the range commented on my interesting choice.
Powder was Pyrodex RS, caps were #11, and projectile was Hogdon's lead balls with patches. Cleaning solutions were hot water and Palmolive dish washing hand soap.
The cleaning was relatively straightforward, but still much more involved than the small cannons. Shooting was fun and historic but the cannons were more fun and less cleaning.

My dad recently died unexpectedly and he had one new from the 90s. Just put it together, looking forward to shooting it. He also had a Cabela's buffalo and army revolver. Going to the range tomorrow!

..I bought a Thompson Center Hawken in 50 cal in 1974 shortly after I returned home from better than two years in Gernany with the army..great gun...lost it to pawn in 1979 when I moved to Florida and needed quick cash

Awesome rifle. I bought the 50 caliber Hawken rifle from Cabela's a few years back, she's shoots great and is a beautiful rifle.
You have a beautiful rifle, I really like the .54 caliber and want a .54 next.
    Thank you for sharing.

I have 2 of that exact rifle. A couple of things to consider are to put a small dot of white out on the tip of the front sight so you can see it better in low light. Second, get yourself a fiberglass ram rod to use at the range, instead of using the wooden one. The wooden one can break. Better to just take that rod hunting. It's a great rifle, mine are accurate out to 100 yds..

I bought the 45 cal. around 25 years ago! Little did I know that a 45 rifle uses a 44 cal ball and my 44 revolver uses a 45 cal ball…

This setup came with a lot of accessories. I don't think you get half that much good stuff now-a-days.

Did it come with all that from the factory, or was it acquired by the previous owner, who just wanted to get rid of it all?

@@johnmullholand2044 I am the first owner because I bought that kit when I was in college in the 1990's. That is exactly the way it came.

For a fast, cheap introduction, they are ok. I assure you, you will get a far better one, and there are several very good companies.

There is probably a blunderbuss kit in my future which will probably be a video. Right now, I am working on a single shot muzzleloader pistol and will probably upload the video in 2 weeks.

You cannot get this particular model anymore from Cabelas but they have similar models. You can get it through mail order in most states or at the Bass Pro Shops
      www.cabelas.com/shop/en/pedersoli-traditional-hawken-percussion-rifle
The closest ones available today are the Muzzle Loaders Investarms Hawkens like this one and I thoroughly recommend it because it is a little nicer made than mine is

      Have fun and shoot safely!
