  • A long weekend getaway to Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland.
    In this video I show off the stunning scenery of the Swiss Alps in summer, and breakdown a 4 day hiking trip some friends and I took to the Jungfrau region in Switzerland: where we stayed, what hikes we did, and how much it all cost.

    I was there a few weeks ago so this brought back very good memories. It's the best place in the World. I stayed in Lauterbrunnen but my favourite places were Wengen and Murren. Looks like you did a few hikes that I would have loved to have done but my stay wasn't long enough. Also the trails up higher were closed due to the threat of avalanches. My daily average spend was $168AUD which is around 95gbp. I kept costs down by only having breakfast and then doing a big lunch/dinner combination at around 4pm every day. I also hiked as much as possible instead of getting transport.

    • @KennyC

      Keeping it under £100 a day is impressive, but shows you it can be done! Thanks a lot for sharing - just have to be conscious where you're spending your money, and what you want to get out of the holiday. We were similar in that we tried to walk everywhere - only time really we ever got the train from Wengen to Lauterbrunnen (or or vice versa) was if we had all our luggage!

    I’m off to Grindelwald in 2 weeks with my family, so very excited!
    Interesting that you hired a car rather than take the train; it hardly looked like you used the car that much. In the Jungfrau region and the wider area (Bernese oberland) they have passes which cover the mountain railways / cable cars/ buses etc - we think that the 6 day pass we are getting will save our family probably hundreds of pounds!

    • @KennyC
      @KennyC  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks so much! Yes we could definitely have made the trip cheaper if we were to take the train everywhere, and if the group was less than 3 people I probably would have as rentals in Switzerland aren't cheap. But splitting the cost helped hugely, and we decided to hire it more for the sake of convenience and flexibility - it's nice to just be able to go wherever without having to worry about trains and buses, especially when you're there for little more than a weekend!

    Fantastic video! I'm planning to go next summer and this is such a great introduction. Your hikes looked particularly amazing and I'd love to hike around the area but I do tend to get lost easily. Were the trails really straightforward or were there a few bits to figure out?

    • @KennyC
      @KennyC  Před 5 lety +1

      Appreciate it! If you've been hiking before, you should be fine. The hiking maps you can pick up when you're there are really detailed, so if you're not used to reading maps then it might all look a bit confusing at first but I you'll get the hang of it pretty quickly. Also the trails are for the most part pretty clearly marked out, at no point did we wonder whether we were actually on a path or not!

    Nice video! We are wondering, if you go to Switzerland in April (when we have time) would you spend your time in Lauterbrunnen or ???

    • @KennyC
      @KennyC  Před 2 lety

      Hard to say as I didn't experience Lauterbrunnen in April! Main thing I'd check is the weather forecast and how much snow there would be, as I know that the Alps are obviously very different depending on whether you go in the summer or the winter. If there's still a lot of snow, and you're looking to do some hiking, then it might limit you a little more compared to when we went in the peak of summer. I've seen videos of Lauterbrunnen in the winter though, and it looks just as magical, so not sure if that place can look bad at any point in the year!
      And sadly I haven't experienced much else of Switzerland, so can't really recommend another town/region. There's another video on my channel of some hiking I did with a friend in the Dolomites the year before this trip though, and that's equally if not more impressive from a landscape POV!

You can also find it on Google Maps - if you go to Lauterbrunnen, and select the little yellow person in the bottom right hand corner, you can amazingly go into street view mode along the path that clings to the east side of the valley!

      Thanks mate! And honestly I'd be guessing just as much as you would be - we didn't hike through a single bit of snow during July...we could see it further up, but never quite reached it. So backtrack 2 months, maybe there would be remains from the winter scattered about? I'd have a look at what the average midday temp will be, if it's fairly high then chances are a lot of it will have melted away!

Would you recommend going in July? Im trying to avoid the rainy days. Also how was the temperature overall?

    • @KennyC
      @KennyC  Před 5 lety +1

      No problem! Thanks for watching, and yes that's exactly why I thought I'd make one! We went at the beginning of July, so all the footage you're seeing in this video is from then - the weather was great, we had some clouds but it was always sunny and warm, but not so warm that hiking was almost uncomfortable! It should be around 18 degrees in July. Also worth noting that the weather apps often say there's thunderstorms when you look online - I found they did this for the Dolomites as well, and never experienced one. Not sure why they do, or if they're just predicting the worst case scenario since mountainous weather can sometimes change quickly, but I wouldn't let that put you off when doing research!

      Asanka Gunasekara I actually went up there this past April the 20th and stayed for a few days. There is more snow than in the video but still mostly everything was vibrant. The only thing I’d say you might have trouble with is that the waterfall path they walked through in this video was closed. And the trail going from the back of the valley up to murren and Grimwald was technically closed but there was people coming down so I hiked it anyway with no problem, just a little snow. Overall it was still very good and definitely not a whole lot of people. If I could do it again tho I’d go just a bit later for more vibrant green

It obviously depends on how far you're going on it tho, we only ever caught the train either going up into Wengen, or going back down into Lauterbrunnen. But seeing how beautiful Lauterbrunnen is, we really want to visit (it's approx a 3hr 30min journey by car).
    If we're to plan a day trip and only had around 6 hours in Lauterbrunnen (and with a train up to Wengen), what would you recommend we MUST do, if anything can be done at all 😅 (not activities per se, but where to visit for good views, etc).
    Also, how did parking work out?
    Thanks!

    • @KennyC
      @KennyC  Před 4 lety +2

      Thanks so much! I'd definitely try and do a day trip to Lauterbrunnen if you can, and parts of the drive are so stunning it won't feel like 3.5 hours because you'll be so in awe half the time!
      I'm not sure if you'd be able to fit much of a hike in if you only have 6 hours. If you did want to do a bit of walking, I'd say park your car in Lauterbrunnen and hike up to Wengen - this won't take too long and ensures you can appreciate the views of the valley in your own time, which you can't as much on the train. Once you're up there you have the option of catching one of the alpine trains if you want to travel further up one of the neighbouring mountains - for instance I don't think it took that long to get the train from Wengen to the Eigergletscher station, and the views from up there are pretty incredible. Then you could get the train all the way back down to Lauterbrunnen town and get something to eat before you leave. Whatever you end up doing, it's hard not to enjoy it when you're in such a stunning setting!

    • @KennyC
      @KennyC  Před 4 lety

      Thanks mate! So £660 was for one person (me in this case), but the costs that covered the car and the accommodation were split between the 4 of us. Obviously if I was travelling solo then I wouldn't have stayed somewhere that accommodates 4 people, so would have found somewhere cheaper...the car however is where the real advantage of having multiple people comes into play

    • @KennyC
      @KennyC  Před 5 lety +1

      When I was up above the valley (so either side of it) I didn't have any issues, I just made sure I was sensible with it and didn't send it too far away or too high up. I did see a helicopter fly through the valley during the trip (to put out a fire), so it definitely is a used flight zone. If you haven't turned off the max altitude function that works in coordination with the flight zone you're in, you won't be able to send it up more than about 15m when you're on the valley floor (that was my experience). I also never flew it near the town itself. I'm against flying drones in densely populated places (like cities), but when you're out in the open like that I trust I'm sensible enough to fly it!

    • @NarrativeEscapes
      @NarrativeEscapes Před 5 lety

      @@KennyC Yeah, a lot of the restrictions seem to be built on the assumption you're flying it at crazy heights or very distant from you .
      I am very conservative on they front. Stays well within range of a sensible pull back shot aside .
      Thanks.

    • @KennyC
      @KennyC  Před 5 lety +1

      Cheers Dave! No I didn't encounter any issues - I just made sure I stuck to the basic drone principles of not flying it in any built up areas, keeping it within eyesight etc. There was one day when I saw a helicopter flying through the valley to help put out a small fire that had started, and did think 'good thing I didn't have my drone up' then, but the day before when I got most of those shots I could see for miles around and had something like that happened I just wouldn't have sent it up! I try to be more on the conservative side, but also trust myself not to be reckless with it!

      @@KennyC thanks, just got back, got some great shots. Stayed away from the helicopters and also a lot of para gliders to avoid.. I didn't fly when they were around, as if I lost control of the drone for any reason and it flew near their chute, could have been terrible. No one really hassled me and I followed all of their rules which are common sense. Thanks for the reply!

    Thank you for making this video! It's really helpful. I am trying to plan our trip to Switzerland this july. On the first day, did you do the loop hike through lauterbrunnen. I see videos where they say you need to take a tram up to Grutschalp. Is it necessary as the tram ticket is around 80+ euros. I like the hike you did. Would you be able to walk me through the trail you took? I mean all the places you covered along the route.

    • @KennyC
      @KennyC  Před 5 lety +1

      No problem! Glad you found it useful. So I just googled where Grutschalp was and after seeing it on Google maps I remember we did stop off at this tram station but it was because we hiked up to it from the town below (quite a steep decent from memory). So it depends on how much hiking you're looking to do - you definitely don't need to pay for the tram ticket if you're happy to walk. From there we took one of the paths to Murren, of which there are a couple. We took the longer route I believe, but I remember we missed this cool bridge that you cross if you go on one of the others (sorry I can't be more specific, I just remember seeing pictures of it and wished we had crossed it!). From Murren we walked to Grimmelwald, and then there's a trail that takes you back down to the valley floor. Once you're here, I believe you more or less are just walking along the road until you get back to Lauterbrunnen which is quite the hike, but it's completely flat so a little easier. I don't think we stuck to a trail that is mapped out from start to finish in a guide book or anything, we were fairly flexible once on the exact route once we got to places like Murren and Grimmelwald. However, there are points (like going from Grutschalp to Murren) were there are only a couple of routes you can take so you don't have much of a choice. Hope that all helps!

      I was there a few weeks ago and actually walked from Wengen to Grutschalp. The part of the walk from Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp took me around 2 and a half hours and is up hill the whole way. Not many views on the way either and only came across 2 other people the whole time. On another day I caught the cable car to Grutschalp and walked from there to Murren which I would highly recommend. It's an easy walk and the views are ridiculously beautiful

I believe there are, but honestly I didn't look into it a ton before I left, I just stuck to the basic rules: don't fly it in any built up areas, always keep it within eyesight, don't fly it near an airport etc. Whenever I put it up, I made sure I wasn't causing any inconveniences or being reckless in anyway.
