That’s probably factoring in the cost to replace the backup camera wiring which the theives probably ripped out getting the gate off. The whole harness has to be replaced at that point. Then you’ve got to get a new tailgate painted to match which that alone can add a grand or more to the cost. In my state it’s actually illegal to drive around without one so I definitely would have it into insurance and probably have to have a loaner for however long it took to replace

I've got a crazy, radical idea but I think it may just work: Lock your truck and tailgate! There's some awful reporting here that mentions putting a hose clamp on it but doesn't bother reminding folks that tailgates have locks on them. BTW, you can buy locks specifically designed to do the same thing as the hose clamp but requires some sort of key instead of the very difficult to find 5/16" socket for the hose clamp if simply locking the tailgate is too much effort. If you're too lazy to lock it up then you get what you deserve.

I remember in the 90s and early 00s body shops did this stuff all the time. They’d steal parts or the whole car. Parts were hard to find or expensive. So they need parts to fix a car. Just steal one, strip it of what they needed, and then dump it. Since they know the area they’d dump them in spots where they’d have a good chance to get that job. Turn 1 customer into 2 and not have to pay for materials. There was a mall in our area that was notorious for it.

2016-2024 Tacomas shouldn't have this problem. There's tailgate lock that prevents the tailgate from being opened and shitbag thieves from unhooking the two hinges when the tailgate is down. 2005-2015 Tacomas didn't have this feature and were always being stolen. Ask me how I know 🙄😐 There's an inexpensive lock about ($50) that can installed on older Tacomas relatively easily to prevent this
