That’s probably factoring in the cost to replace the backup camera wiring which the theives probably ripped out getting the gate off. The whole harness has to be replaced at that point. Then you’ve got to get a new tailgate painted to match which that alone can add a grand or more to the cost. In my state it’s actually illegal to drive around without one so I definitely would have it into insurance and probably have to have a loaner for however long it took to replace

@@raycosman824 if you saw how hard it is to get the hose clamp in the tight little space it goes you will understand a powered screwdriver will not fit in that space. It takes a lot of time to install and remove. You can also clock the hose clamp where you tighten it with an open end wrench and cannot get a screwdriver on it. It is a great deterrent.

Easy to unlock it if you go at the bottom unplug the tailgate camera and lock connector, then the thieves have a female or male part of your truck model hook it up and apply voltage to the lock mechanism and boom! Opens up and ready to un-hook the tailgate, mine i put an cheap remote motorcycle motion alarm inside my tailgate, arm it whenever i park and when tailgate moves the freakin loud alarm will alert anyone👍
The clamp works if the thief doesn't have a screwdriver. There are inexpensive. purpose built anti-theft clamps that require a special key. I've had two unsuccessful attempts to steal my tailgate.
When these tailgates were built then the manufacturer knew how easy these would be stolen just like KIAs. Shame on them for producing such an expensive item that's so easy to steal.
They should have vetting processes to deter selling stolen car parts. So if you sell anything stolen, your account should not only be banned permanently but also the FBI or local law enforcement will be contacted.

I've always used either a hose clamp, or more recently, a locking clamp with a security key to unlock it since I had my own tailgate stolen in the late 90's... Way cheaper to replace than now but still a real PITA! You can find them at AutoAnything or other online retailers... They are relatively inexpensive..

Install an automatic lock, did it on two Tacoma's. Toyota offers it as an option....these trucks cost over 40k and Toyota can't be bothered to just include it.
Not a tailgate issue but I went out to my van today to go somewhere and found a 7/8" deep socket near my rear wheel. That's the common size for lug wrenches. My wheels are not pretty at all but apparently someone wanted them or the tires. The lug nuts are those weird ones which require an adapter to remove.

There's some awful reporting here that mentions putting a hose clamp on it but doesn't bother reminding folks that tailgates have locks on them. BTW, you can buy locks specifically designed to do the same thing as the hose clamp but requires some sort of key instead of the very difficult to find 5/16" socket for the hose clamp if simply locking the tailgate is too much effort. If you're too lazy to lock it up then you get what you deserve.

I remember in the 90s and early 00s body shops did this stuff all the time. They’d steal parts or the whole car. Parts were hard to find or expensive. So they need parts to fix a car. Just steal one, strip it of what they needed, and then dump it. Since they know the area they’d dump them in spots where they’d have a good chance to get that job. Turn 1 customer into 2 and not have to pay for materials. There was a mall in our area that was notorious for it.
2016-2024 Tacomas shouldn't have this problem. There's tailgate lock that prevents the tailgate from being opened and shitbag thieves from unhooking the two hinges when the tailgate is down. 2005-2015 Tacomas didn't have this feature and were always being stolen. Ask me how I know 🙄😐 There's an inexpensive lock about ($50) that can installed on older Tacomas relatively easily to prevent this

Hose clamp is not a deterrent. Perhaps tack welding a metal strap would be more of a deterrent
