I used a hose clamp with the screw facing downward. You'll need an extension for your ratchet to tighten it down and have to tighten it by lying on your back. But it's definitely hard to access in a hurry if not impossible.
I want to add my experience with this lock. First.. the good news. It does work with the 2023 TRD Sport - Gen 3 tailgate. However, I watched a different video, where the guy didn't explain the need to remove the existing pin. I tried to install it, watching his video and bent the outer housing where the rubber tailgate plunger fits into the side.. when I tried to close the tailgate and it didn't work - which bent the housing. I had to remove it, get a thick nosed pair of pliers and bend it back to round. Only after finding this video did I learn about pulling the existing pin with needle nose, then I reinstalled the lock, this time it worked. ps. The sticker provided to cover the lock is useless. I used a small piece of duct tape over the key groves but will plan to drop a little bike oil on it ever so often to help the possibility of it rusting. Do watch this video before installing.
Solid comment, thanks for watching!
Success! I already installed it. It was easier to unbolt all the rear panel at least for me. Also, my wife insisted in another measure: I pop rivet a d ring anchor on the tailgate left side. I put a very short chain with two locks, one at the bed d ring and another at the new d ring on the tailgate. Therefore, with the tailgate locked, the hard tonneau cover, the Tavaski tailgate lock and the lock and chain, I can sleep without worries.
From Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 good teaching 💪🏼 us army
Great Video. My 2017 Tacoma tailgate and rear lights were stolen in broad daylight a few weeks ago. I will buy it and make sure to always lock the tailgate and close the tonneau cover.
What state do you live in?
Outstanding! Worked perfectly on my 2017 Tacoma TRD Offroad. Thank you!
Glad you like it!
Awesome product! Wish they thought about expanding the make of truck it could be used on.
I've had mine on for about three years and have never removed or unlocked it and today i needed to remove the tailgate but the lock turns and it will not release , i will suggest to anyone that installs one of these locks on your tailgate not to forget it and lube it once in a while.
Could you remove it after all?
It comes with a “dust cap” so make sure you put that on so dirt can’t get inside the lock.
Gracias
@@jorgevillanueva6595 Yes i removed it , it was just a bit stuck but a little lubrication did it .
Cool vid. Thanks for the heads up. Can you just remove the tailgate to install the lock though? Or do you need to replace that plastic piece?
I’m pretty sure you have to be able to lift up the plastic piece to install it. It’s not that hard, it’s maybe 5 screws.
I just got my 2022 Tacoma TRD OFF ROAD this morning and I noticed there is a black clamp attached to it already. I was supposed to show it to my brother about how some people steal the tailgate and need a hose clamp or some kind of anti-theft. He said it looks like there is already installed clamp.
Interesting 🧐
Must be dealer installed. My 22 doesn't have anything there.
My 2022 came factory keyfob lock.
Does it work with a dampened tailgate
Yes it does
Your trd didn’t come with it? My 4x4 sr did that’s odd because mine is the lowest trim besides the v6 and 4x4
No, what year is your truck? Mine is a 2018
@@MuscleAmerican oh maybe it’s a feature they added in 2020 I have a 22
@@okie8738 maybe the dealership added it to prevent theft?
@@MuscleAmerican I looked at my window sticker and it wasn’t on there as a option Gulf States Toyota must have done it
Will this fit 2023 model Tacoma ?
I believe so, 2023 should be the same.
@@MuscleAmerican Yes, it will, I did mine today, however the first video I watched didn't mention pulling the existing pin in the middle, so I didn't. I went ahead and installed without doing this and bent the metal housing around the outside. I had to bend it back and try again, this time removing the old pin after watching this video. It worked. Thanks to the author of this video. It helped to see someone actually pull the pin.
I bet a cold chisel and 3lb hammer would defeat this easily
Im sure you could and f.....k up the tailgate.
Can you told me the lock name
Tavaski is the name. There are links in the video description.
If you haven't bought this lock yet I suggest the SaBellCo instead, they did the R&D and make there's out of CNC machined aluminum and use a higher quality lock and keys and they are made in the USA.
This Tavaski, GrteRokki and Guziko are all China made knock offs made out of cast aluminum and zinc with a cheaper lock and keys.
The SaBellCo is more expensive but the quality is outstanding and the materials are head and shoulders better.
Why pay $100 for that when the OEM power lock upgrade is $140 and an hour of easy time?
You could forget to lock it?
Exactly, I just purchased the OEM lock kit, easy to install and works with the rest of your power locks. Especially handy with a tonneau cover to add more security.
I posted a picture of mine on FB and those knuckleheads were telling me 1) hose clamp is just as good or 2) it won’t prevent someone committed from taking it anyway. Idiots.
How are they going to take it with it on?
@@MuscleAmerican dude said it’s a poor quality lock that could be easily defeated. He was very aggressive about my level of ignorance 😉
@@mrk8212 ha ha ok to each their own? 🤷♂️
@@MuscleAmerican yep I think he was secretly jealous
@@mrk8212 From experience I can tell you that the SaBellCo tailgate lock is not a cheep lock it took me about half hour two fully charged batteries of constant drilling to remove my lock.
SaBellCo is a better tailgate lock, SaBellCo CNC machines the lock body from a solid piece of aluminum and they use a higher quality lock. This Tavaski, GrteRokky and the Guziko are knock offs of the SaBellCo, but the Tavaski, GrteRokky and Guziko are cast aluminum and zinc so they will shatter or break in chunks if struck with a hammer or pried on with a pry bar.
SaBellCo put in the R&D for this design and Tavaski, GrteRokky and Guziko copied their design. It is probably one company in China that copied the design and is selling it under different names. The Tavaski, GrteRokky and Guziko are all made in China.
The SaBellCo is made in the USA as is the lock assembly they use in their body, the quality of the SaBellCo is head and shoulders better these these China knock offs.
You are correct. Had I known that before I purchased the lock I would have bought the SaBellCo. I put both links in the video description so people can make their own choice.
Can't you just lock the tailgate and they can't remove it????
Yes you can but it’s inconvenient to unlock and lock it every time.
@@MuscleAmerican you must live in a blue state.
@@RonSavage01 definitely not
@@MuscleAmerican your profile says otherwise LMAO
@@RonSavage01 Apparently I don’t know where I live, please do tell.
They stole on my tundra, with automatic lock.
