Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller Long Term Review - How good is it after 7 months?

Even with a couple minor flaws I still can't imagine going back to a regular controller. Having the paddles and hair triggers, along with being able to customize button mapping on the fly with switchable profiles is amazing. When you get used to the characteristics of the thumbsticks you can still be very competitive.
Cons - People shouldn't be having button/stick issues after 7 months of ownership on a $180 controller. When you consider Microsoft only has a 90 day warranty on this premium product, it's as if they know the quality isn't as high as it should have been. If you get one that works, it's an amazing experience.

Thanks for the review! I love mine, even with the minor issues! I can't play without paddles anymore. Feels unnatural. Lol.
Yeah exactly! Something's missing when I play without paddles lol. Can't go back
I actually hate the panels and never use them. The A button was messed up out of the box, I have to press the A button harder than I'd like to but thats about it. The first elite controller the right stick got loose and I can hear it rattling when I turn it upside down. The controller doesn't help me play better either, its all a selling scheme. I play better with the regular controller
After three months and I love it.
I just hate the feeling of it when my hands are dry, it's like this thing is meant for a good sweatfest.
I had mine for about 8 months and it still feels amazing...no lie, only slight problem I have is stick drift on the right stick but I have to force it to have drift...other than that, no problems
You got lucky, got mine in December, I’ve taken good care of it and the draw in my left stick is so bad I can sprint in destiny 2, remove my hand from the controller, and I just keep going, I have hardly any precision in my movements and it’s real bad, I’ve tried everything and it just continues to spiral downhill as I play with it
@@ch113d3 stick drift has been around since 2013 and its still here no matter how much you pay, you watch the new gen consoles will also suffer this shit.360 controller never got this problem.
Take the thumb stick off and with your fingers tighten the little black piece that goes around the screw. That's how I fixed my stick drift problems
I spent about ten hours researching headsets and controllers for the Series X, which I FINALLY managed to get from Target. I considered a wide range of products and opinions for both headsets and controllers. In the end, your reviews wound up determining my choices, and I'm very happy with the products I eventually bought. Really good job with your explanations, especially with technical details of audio, which is hard to understand.
Thanks so much for the kind words! I genuinely hope that you like and enjoy what you picked! If you have any issues let me know and I’ll do my best to answer!
I have had my elite 2 for about a year now and I think it’s coming to the end of its lifespan, I have basically used it everyday for about 4-7 hours a day.
So for a while now it’s been having issues with the RB like said in the video but I think it’s been alright, it does require me to hold it down hard but it still works.
Issue 2 has happened on the night of me posting this comment, the new issue is that it has now got a little part floating around now.
It has only caused me a little issue but I got it fixed. The problem I had with the lose piece was that it got stuck between the trigger lock and the trigger itself, it keep getting stuck all the way down and the trigger lock also got stuck.
But otherwise it is still usable which is great 😊
At least you've been getting some good use out of it! I wish the controllers would hold up better for the long haul, as I'd love to continue using this with my Series X.
I’ve had 2. First one had massive stick drift. But it was within 30 days so I got a new one. Then 6 months after dat my second one had a issue with rb. I’m gonna use my Best Buy warranty and get another one soon
take the face plate off the controller, look for your rb button, apply small amount of force on the button in the direction of your bumper button, this will bend the metal structure of the button decreasing the distance between your button and the actuator.... this will sort out your bumper issue without breaking the warranty seal
So the bumper thing was something I went threw as well with mine being about as old as yours and without a warranty I chose to take it apart and try to fix it myself. After trying a few things what worked for me to get it back to 100% was get wd40 and I sprayed it on a pick and used the pick to sorta get it to drop into where the actual bumper switch is and pressed the button a bunch to work it in. After that it works perfect not sure if it may have gotten dust in there causing problems or what but yeah that worked
Hey man! Great video, any updates on the controller? Any issues after all this time?
I’ve currently gone through 3 of these controllers! The first one I purchased I did not buy a extended warranty or repair plan once so ever. The other 2 I also didn’t, I just kept thinking hey maybe I’m getting the bad apple out of the bunch but I’m finally pushing myself to buy another one and was wondering.. has any of these issues been dealt with? Has Microsoft made adjustments or fixed absolutely anything with these controllers especially since it’s been 9 or so months? Just curious, thank you.
Had mine for little over a year!!!
I had this for 3 years and over 25 days played with it
yeah im getting this controller despite the issues. people have been saying the razer wolverine is better, but i own it and will be returning it cuz it feels weird. The only reason im considering getting the elite, is cuz i can get it at costco for cheap with a lifetime warranty, wish me luck lol
Gotta love Costco!
@@katsuofujita107 If its true it may be worth a Costco membership for that and other things.
If your going to buy an elite controller, i suggest ya buy it at a big store, best buy, or walmart type store and then purchase their warranty program. When i did for the 1st elite controller, got it at best buy, think it was 20 dollars for two years.
Great advice, and it's what I do for mine. Best Buy replacement plan is a little costly but saves me a lot of hassle and, in this case, money.

same problem. I changed 3 ... and nothing ... again
I've had mine since launch. I never had an issue with the Elite 1, although I know a few friends that have. The elite 2 is better but the same, the integrated battery is a huge +
U could literally buy battery packs thatre rechargeable lmao not a huge + buddy if that's what sold you than u got got about 90$ for a 10$pack
@@ronswanson4173 you commented on a year old comment? Wtf?
This controller ended up breaking anyways at around the year mark the RB and LB buttons went.
Ouch... this why i prefer the series 1... at least i can repair those myself
I’ve just bought one from amazon and got the 3 year repair or replace insurance so I’m good for 3 years at least. 👌🏻
That's a great way to do it. Good call
How is it holding up? Any problems?
With first gen controller triggers when i used the slide range adjusters underneath combined with deadzone you could adjust it so with full movement of trigger would only activate the button to a percentage for eg,,, 72%. perfect for forza ect to enable ABS off . Its as hame i cannot get the same off this controller. Everything i seem to do makes trigger always activate 100% at all times.
I had no idea you could do that, that's awesome! Perhaps people were doing that unintentionally and making a lot of support calls because they couldn't go full speed when driving for example. I'd imagine MS wanted to make the controller more simple in that regard.
I think you can adjust deadzone in the Controller customization app in Xbox and on Windows... that'll ignore the movement in the stick before you hit the spring tension.
True, but too much dead zone reduces your ability to make small/micro-adjustments to aim which could be critical for long range sniping. It's all about tuning the response to be as tight as possible with little-to-no drift.
@@GadgetryTech
I agree.
If it were be I'd still bring the deadzone closer to where the spring releases... but you're right... the looser the spring the more deadzone you'll have to have... a lot of pros and cons... maybe in the future they can get the neutral wiggle even smaller.
@@Xcentr1cK Yeah I hope so as well. I still enjoy the hair triggers and paddles enough to justify continuous use of the Elite Series 2, but it could have been sooo good!
@@GadgetryTech
yeah well said. Even Ferraris have pro's and con's
On my 3rd Elite 2, stick drift on the first 2. These controllers are not much better than the standard ones quality wise. Battery, features are amazing, they just need them to be better for the 3 times cost.
can you try the scuf prestige?
Don't know if you're still responding to people, but wow man I appreciate you going through the dead zone! Had mine for 3 months and the play in the sticks don't really bother me and it'd help to get some feedback. Have you tried shaking your elite slightly? Out of the box I hear a small rattle from under my left thumb stick, starting to think this will lead to drift or other problems. Other than that I have a 3 year plan and the controller has been flawless, don't really want to swap it but non of my other controllers have this rattling. Appreciate the video!
Thanks for the kind words. I just have it a few big shakes and there's no odd noises coming from it. Hopefully everything else is working well for you!
@@GadgetryTech Yeah I had a rattle coming from under the loose thumb stick I think it was damaged at some point in the package. Microsoft was very helpful and their sending me a free basic controller while I wait for my replacement. Hopefully the ones the techs look at and send back doesn't have as much slack in the left stick. Thanks man
So just bought my elite and I've had problems where the left thumb stick would get stuck and my character would move in one direction or another when I didn't want them to. I was able to tighten a plastic piece on the stick And so far its working. Do you think I should return it? I've had it for a week. I really don't want to go through the hassle of returning it to Microsoft but I'm not sure how long it will hold up
Nice review!!
I bought one 2 months ago and now start a Double click RB... It is not bothers me, it happens from time to time and does not disturb, but I was wondering, if who had the same problem, if it gets worse with time?
Hi Luis, and thanks! My right bumper has been the most problematic part of the controller. I have to make sure I press it hard sometimes.
yup this happened to me , ive gone throuigh 6 replacements now
just got mine a week ago wish me luck
How is it so far????
Did it Go bad yet?
Mine has stick drift till 13% and it’s not even a month old. I got it from Germany and I can’t send it for warranty, any tips on how to reduce the dead zones ?
Honestly even if you could fix that, with that much drift and a fix your aim will be pretty poor. I would see what other options you have for swapping it out.
i love it, but after 6 months my bumpers started to fail and at this point they dont work.
Same
I’m glad I got extended warranty.
Still doesn't work for Mac. Sucks! It does work on iOS Beta 14 tho.
I think you just got lucky on your standard xbox controller. My last one had a deadzone from 0.04 to -0.14 out of the box.
I tested two standard Xbox controllers and the second one was tighter on one side but looser on the other. It averaged out so I didn't mention additional controllers. Sorry to hear you got -0.14 though! Hopefully it still plays well for you.
Can someone answer my question I had for a while?? Loosen both sticks. Is yall left stick more tighter that the right one? Cause mines is like that.
Hello. I thought my left stick felt slightly tighter than my left. Less play/wiggle room, and when you move it, the stiffness was higher as well. It's only slight for me though. I max out the tension on the right stick anyway so in the end I got used to it.
@@GadgetryTech I believe they did that on purpose. Because people were concerned about drift on the left stick. I never heard anyome having drift on the left one. Only the right..
My series 2 was unusable after 6months due to stick drift on both sticks.. I had to get a new one.. i love the series 2 but they need to fix the drift..
I’ve had mine for a year and I don’t have stuck drift I must’ve been lucky
@@buttermulk7649 I’m usually really lucky with things people said I was gonna get issues with my series S because the first batch of new consoles are always faulty but my series S has zero issues whatsoever PLUS they extended the warranty to a full year on elite series 2
@@LIIIIIFE where ?
@@LIIIIIFE my controller i bought it back in may you think i can still do it
@@LIIIIIFE hey you snap where I can get more of your help
I hear the RB complaint but why not map it to thee xtra trigger on the back?
It's certainly a workaround, but an issue that shouldn't exist at this price point so early on in its use.
GadgetryTech for sure
The looseness of the sticks and deadzone is terrible on these... literally just had 2 this week... both issue but 1 is good at 7% deadzone setting... still nowhere near as good as my elite 1 i used 2 years
GameStop has a 2 year warranty as well
What app are you using to measure inputs
gamepad-tester.com/
I have just bought and returned two of these. How can these controllers be so bad?!
How you get this test program?
gamepad-tester.com/
My A button doesnt respond properly. Bought it february 2021. Returned it.
They still haven't fixed the durability issues on these? Damn...
@@quintonloewecke3103 Yeah that's why I waited so long with ordering it, to be sure stuff like this was fixed. I am actually angry at this point.
was happy with mine until the left stick start to drift
It happens. Sorry to hear you got the drift issue. Microsoft extended the warranty to a full year though so look for your receipt and see if you can get it covered.
That was the problem with the one I bought. The looseness in the sticks before hitting that wall and receiving the input after. That's unacceptable. Sent mine back. Xbox one controller quality is crap
Cap
I wish it was tighter. It seems inconsistent though. Both of my Elite 2s had different dead zone characteristics.
Where you buy it from?
Both were bought at Best Buy.
Anyone living outside the USA such as I am, is screwed when it comes to anything being warrented by a company in the USA.
Sorry to hear. Honestly this is not the best when it comes to long term quality and consistency. If you get lucky and get a good one, it's an amazing controller.
Way better than scuf in my opinion!
wow no problems another youtuber had his for 7months he had stick drift lol
He sounds like he has a gun pointed At him behind the camera
Lol. I can assure you I'm safe.
Bro he’s chilling
Really want it but heard it breaks and is not good
Same I want to get it for my birthday but I’ve heard that it has many durability issues so I’m still debating
I have one and got stick drift but warranty helps a lot if you have stick drift you email then you send your controller to Xbox and they sent me back a brand new one. This was a good 10 months after buying it
@@jyotilal3614 we in the same boat. I was thinking about getting it for my bday next month. But im always hearing and seeing more negative than positive about the controller.
Im Getting It Regardless, The Store Im buying it from, has "good" costumer service so if it comes out bad, i'll replace it, or get my money back
Awful don’t buy it both my triggers feel like someone glued them because of a adhesive that slips
It was sooooo good that they gave 90 days warranty??? Jeeeez i am glad i never got this pos. Even with extended year warranty issue with stick drift will still remain, then what after 1 year? I just sold xbox one(not s or x) controller 100% correct and even i got it used. This "elite2" breaks down in 6 months for freaking 180$ controller???
I bought one from GameStop got the warenty and the warenity was 50$
Same as best buys
After 7 months, my bumpers broke, rubber on the trigger locks came off, i didn't even get to use them and rhe right stick moves down without tension, this controller is made of such brittle plastic and poor electronics
Chase Rawling you have to remember that with launch there were a LOT of bad bunches. Right now there’s no stock in any UK so I hope they’re fixing it before they bring out more stock
That's much worse than my experience, sorry to hear. If anything, my bumper seems to be working a little better lately which is good considering the backorder on them right now.
bro u so bias.. cmon.. lol (i'm j/k)... appreciate the follow-up reveiw~!
Haha I read the beginning and I was like wtf... Oh
There’s a class action lawsuit against Microsoft because of this controller now

Just buy one from Amazon cause you get a 1 to 3 year warranty
Is this true?
@@dboooshi I believe so unless they changed it
The only thing microsoft makes to last in there xboxs...
elite controller with a noob warranty.
SIGNALacquired Right. I just bought it with extended warranty. Even Power A controllers have a year.
Customers... theres stick drift
Microsoft... makes mega wiggle deadzone
It’s ass don’t get it I swear to god one of your buttons going to get stuck or the buttons gotta be pressed extra hard I regret spending 200$ on this controller
The worst controller of all time !. I had 4 of them, all of them had bugs. Never again.
Worst controller I’ve ever bought. Only saying it so no one wastes their money
Sorry to hear! It's certainly hard to justify the cost but having paddles/hair triggers is amazing for FPS. Regardless of brand, any controller that has those features gives you an advantage.
