    Tony is right sprinting is dangerous but so is everything else in cycling. The problem is there are rules. The UCI and Tour have select enforcement of their rules. I guess that select enforcement has finally caught up to Jasper.

    I have to disagree with Tony when he said he didn't think Jasper had done too much wrong. Tell that to Wout who had to stop pedaling in order to prevent a crash due to Jasper's reckless riding. Yes, sprinting can be dangerous. That does not grant immunity from prosecution for those cyclist who ride like certified buttholes.

    Dear UCI: the only thing damaging to the sport of cycling about a rider stopping to kiss his wife, is you fining him for it.
    For those against gravel in a stage: The TDF was almost entirely on gravel when it started.

    • @out_spocken
      @out_spocken Před 5 dny +2

      The TDF was also fully unsupported when it started. The TDF also didn't have race radios, team cars.
      Happy for us to go back to what it was if you care that much about continuity. But we have gravel races now. We don't need ROAD (ie tarmac.bitumen) to do it. Cobbles are still roads and there's no dedicated cobble races...so that still stands.
      Each to their own but I don't need it in the TDF unless we are going to go old school with EVERYTHING else.

    • @danielakerman8241
      @danielakerman8241 Před 4 dny

      @@out_spocken that’s a rather Originalist and extreme view. And I’ve got news for you since you brought up cobbles and roads: these gravel sections are still roads, too.
      I wasn’t implying that the TDF needs to be exactly as it was at its inception, only that there’s nothing fundamentally out of place about having gravel on a stage or two, since it was part of the TDF for many years. It’s not like they’re riding Unbound-like terrain. It’s smooth, maintained gravel ROADS (gasp! Road-riding can include gravel roads!).
      There is plenty about the TDF that was never even imagined when it started, and there’s plenty of room for innovations and changes - including roads that aren’t coated with asphalt.

    • @out_spocken
      @out_spocken Před 4 dny

      @@danielakerman8241 originalist and extreme view...how so?
      And yes...really...dirt roads and gravel roads are roads? Wow..I must have missed that in life 101. Thanks for clarifying the obvious.
      My argument is that no-one races cobbles other than road cycling. There's an entire different type of race if you want to ride or watch dirt and gravel cycling.
      Did I find the stage interesting? Hell Yes. But I'd also find cyclists riding in heavy rain going down hill interesting....and they stop races now when that happens. Heck they even move the start of races some distance when the rain is too heavy.
      You had half the peloton stuck completely stopped because the roads were 'that bad' that 'riders' had to get off their bikes and run up the hill. And that's where the race blew apart. I was watching it thinking...well...whats the point. When for a good minute or two the front of the race was hurling along and then you get to see the bcak and there are guys unclipped before they are even on the gravel section, before the banner, just waiting for people to start moving again.
      Not because of a crash, rider error....purely because of shitty route planning.
      It was interesting because of the attacks. I've no doubt they could create a route that was equally as interesting on paved roads that would allow for attacks and the peloton to be broken up instead of riding on more main roads.
      But no...we have to make it riskier for riders...which again...is everything the UCI has said it is about now.
      It's not needed. And if it is...why not open it up completely. Why stop at dirt? Why not let riders ride across mudslides, or in hail. Why not make them ride on uncompact dirt...you know...because that wasn't uncommon for the TDF either.
      The TDF used to do a lot of things. So we should allow that all to happen again too?
      No doubt it's a matter of choice. I just don't think it needs it. I'd rather see a bloody TTT than a gravel stage.
      Heck...I reckon they should probably put jumps in the race too. Innovate into some BMX stuff. Or throw in some legit fallen trees and have a 'cross' stage. Innovation isn't always good. It's just a great word to use to justify things based on aspecific metric/metrics while disregarding other ones

    Jasper is “marked” because he’s repeatedly dangerous. He was highlighted in Netflix documentary because he’s repeatedly been shown to ride beyond the rule. He’s not been called out for it before, and that’s the problem. The rule is there for a reason, his bad habit is the reason. I’m sure he’s not trying to ride dangerous, he’s not trying to hurt other riders; I’m just as sure he’s doing anything he can to win and prefers to be a victim than responsible for his actions.

    As an american roadie turned graveleur, tomorrows stage has been a really easy sell to my casual riding friends who would have never otherwise been interested in the tour.

      IF the Tour (and other Grand Tour) organizers, and stage route planners continue with this trend, and even expand it, maybe some of the teams will try to recruit Lambie (is he still even riding??), who can also TT on tarmac brilliantly, or one of the other gravel stars into their ranks.

    I think the key point everybody missed in that podcase about Jasper Philipsen is Mathieu Van der Poel. Last year MvDP would lead Philipsen at the front of the peloton at full speed until the last 300m. This year MvDP is still helping Philipsen but you can see he is not as fully commited in this Tour de France, probably as he is taking it as a training for the olympics, as he was last year and doesn't lead Philipsen as far into the sprint preparation.

      Agreed on the Prologue, and even more TTs, even though that is against the current trend.
      At one time some TdFs had FOUR Contre la Montres in them, even if one was a pure uphill/hillclimb.
      I am surprised that the route planners made the last stage a TT for the first time in 35 years.
      But maybe the rationale was that the last stage is going to be somewhat anti-climatic anyway due to not finishing in a sprint on the Champs, so what does it matter.
      Might as well have the 'tension' of a nail biting TT (a la '89!) IF the GC is anywhere near close on that last day.

    You said bini might win another one .. I bloody agree with you .. he will win 🏆 twice and keep the green 💚💚💚💚💚💃💃💃💃🇪🇷🇪🇷🇪🇷🇪🇷🇪🇷🇪🇷 bini all the way

    It's NOT just for viewers, entertainment, etc. It is so the competition is WORTH the accolade. If you are going to call this "the Toughest", then make it BE the toughest! The Tour has NEVER hesitated to thrust added challenges into the mix, precisely SO THEY WOULD consider it the toughest, period. If pro riders don't like it, FIND ANOTHER SPORT. Do the Giro twice, specialize in one-day or one-week races. F it, do crit "racing" for all I care. Just DO NOT complain about an event that is SUPPOSED to be tough!

    Why in the world would you want to watch a stage where riders you support and have been training for months could be eliminated because someone thought it would be cool to ride on gravel?
    You can watch gravel races, MTB, races and cyclocross races if you like that.

    Sorry but completely disagree on Jasper's behaviour. Reckless is an understatement. Consistently and knowingly massively deviates racing line to force riders accelerating past him into barriers. People trying to argue about inherent danger of sprint finishes must have short memories - Jakobsen crash! Riders have a duty to hold their line!

    The only people that are damaging the image of one of the most interesting TDF in years, is the UCI with there idiotic fines.
    As for sprinters changing lines while sprinting, IF the UCI were really serious on that they would have DQd Girmay as he closed De lei the same way that Jacobsen did to WVA.
    But there us no consistency in there rulings and to dq Girmay is a place they didn't want to go and this is coming from a Girmay fan.

    Francis come back and save your channel!
    Cade Media has drifted so far away from why it was such a refreshing change from the rest of the normal pro-race oriented podcasts. Now, it’s full of race content BUT at a level of friends chatting down the pub, with little real racing knowledge or factual content. I subscribe to ‘Watts Occurring’ and ‘The Cycling Podcast’ for quality race oriented content.
    I miss the massively refreshing take on the passion of cycling and guidance through all the equipment options away from industry pressure to buy stuff that I don’t need or makes no difference to my non-pro performance. Not sure I will take three weeks of this content…

Sure the sprints are dangerous, all the more reason to take reckless out of it until they learn new habits

Once this is done, it'll be a whole lot easier to find the cast needed when the info is in the title instead of 'stage 8 thoughts' 'stage 9 thoughts'.
