  • @vorebiz
    @vorebiz Před 4 lety +35

    I really like Anthony Ainley's take on The Master. You can see he absolutely adored playing the part, and the slightly melodramatic, campy way he played it, mixed with an undercurrent of vicousness and sadism that occasionally bubbled to the surface was just right for the tone of the stories he was in. If they'd brought The Master back properly around Season 13/14 instead of the one-off appearance hinting for a future return in The Deadly Assassin, then a heavier and more weighty villain actor like Philip Madoc would have undoubtedly been better, but he was the right Master for the 80s, absolutely.
    It's a shame that he was a bit off the boil in his stories with Colin Baker (although, naturally Pip and Jane gave him some bloody awful stuff to work with), but he played against Peter Davison well and he puts in his best performance in Survival for sure.

      @madeleine5561 Před 4 lety +5

      Join the club as far as not standing Simm Goes. Though I do think Dhawan and Roberts remarkably managed to be worse. With Simm I just want the Brigadier to show up and punch him like he did Ainley. I was relieved when we got Missy. Although something has to be said for Jacobi who scared the heck out of me and was a better Master than Simm, Roberts, or Dhawan in five minutes then they were over the course of multiple episodes. I hadn't found a Master that threatening since Delgado. As for Ainley. In my list he falls in fourth place right below Jacobi (my third favourite only beaten out by Missy and Delgado). However, I will not deny that he was good in the role he at least had some level of charisma and threat. My main problem was that he was almost always written as a pantomime villain with little to no character development (Not a fault on the part of Ainley who admitted this himself) I rarely felt that he and the Doctor had once been friends and saw almost no signs of that friendship even slightly being there the way it was with Delgado and Pertwee. And it's that remaining friendship (which I saw in Missy/Capaldi) that I feel sets the Master apart. To be clear I don't think he was a bad Master I liked his scene where he said (A cosmos without the Doctor scarcely bears thinking about) But he didn't feel quite as consistently threatening as Jacobi, Gomez, and Delgado.

      Also grew up with Simm, found him actually good, but when I started watching Classic Who, I began to slowly dislike him more and more. I think Missy is the best incarnation of New Who. Delgado is still my favourite Master.

      @@madeleine5561 Dhawan's pretty good in his own way, I personally just couldn't warm up to him because he erased Gomez's character arc, and Roberts is actually quite good on Big Finish. Seriously, some of his performances on audio are just terrifying. He's pretty much the Master's answer to Colin Baker.

    • @yehiahuzayyin7972
      @yehiahuzayyin7972 Před rokem +2

      @Madeleine Honestly, Simm was the best possible Master to go up against Tennant. He shares Tennant's energy, humor, and love of life with none of his kindness or redeeming qualities. He's a dark parody of his Doctor, just like Delgado was for Pertwee, and Ainley was for Davison, Baker, and McCoy. The issue is that Tennant is at his most reserved and stoic in the Master's episodes, so his Doctor Falls portrayal would've worked better, he's still camp and silly, but much more composed, but Davies pushed for the Series 3 portrayal. And Dhawan showcases an aspect of the Master that most people overlook: his self-hatred. This incarnation is regretful and even suicidal. This was very interesting... until it was shown to be over something so extremely petty. I've always chalked up Chibnall's era as being a valiant effort by a man who clearly loved the show. It was just poorly executed. But he does have his gems. Villa Diodati, the Dalek episodes, and Power of the Doctor come to mind. And I honestly find Jodie's performance to be pretty good for what she's been given. Just my take, at any rate. Capaldi's era will always be the high point of Doctor Who for me, even after experiencing Tom Baker.

    Anthony's Master I help add to an old Triva thing for Doctor Who. Because I said he was the first and only incarnation to have meet with different incarnations of the Doctor. With the five Doctor He faced 1-3. He was in many of the fifth Doctor episodes. He faced off with the Fouth Doctor in Logopolis. He faced the sixth doctor a few times and He faced Seventh Doctor. This is the Master both Tegan and Ace remember. So as this incarnation he fought with 1-7. Roger's was only with 3. Simms meet 10 and 12. Missy only faced 12. Master Yana meet 10. Though he was also the War Master the Doctor and he must not have meet during the War. Eric's Doctor only faced the 8th.The most recent Master Meet the Fugitive and 13th Doctor.
    So Anthonys Doctor faced most of the incarnations.

    I think Ainleys Master did get wasted in some 80s stories like Time Flight Kings Demons Mark of the Rani and the ultimate Foe I in some ways cannot help thinking that Planet of Fire might have been the vehicle for the Masters demise and IMO I had it been up to me would hve not brought the Master back after Planet of Fire given how poorly utilised in Mark of the Rani and the Ultimate Foe and with Time Lord villains such as the Rani and the Valeyard who were far more interesting villains than the Master much as I liked Roger Delgados Master the Master got overused as a villain in the Pertwee and Davison years and it was liked in Blake's Seven with the arch-villain Servalan who was a woman and in season 4 of Blake's Seven Servalan much as she was the arch-villain and Blake's arch-enemy in B7 was overused and useful and likeable a villain as Servalan was she like Ainleys Master got poorly used in some episodes that she was in . I do think in billions of ways Survival the final story of classic Who with Slyvester Mccoys 7th Dr although it is not a favourite story of mine and never will be it showed Ainleys ,Master as the main villain and also that year I entered the first year of my 20s and given how Dr Who ended after Survival I can looking back after 33 years understand why it was axed and I think it was the right thing to do
