I agree. Poor Pearl is in the same boat as other” mush faced” dogs plus all those extra folds of skin. Shar Peis we’re bred as guard dogs and hunters- their loose skin was a protector for them from attacks. BUT- anyone who doesn’t help these dogs ( bulldogs, pugs, etc) with their breathing from smooshed faces are abusive owners. These things are health risks that shorten their life. Shameful!

Some friends of mine had a couple of cats. Of course, cats love to play with yarn or string. Unbeknownst to my friends, one cat had swallowed some yarn. The yarn made it through its insides and some of it was peeking out of its bottom. At about the same time, my friends and the other cat noticed the yarn. The other cat beat my friends to it. The cat started batting at the yarn sticking out of its bottom, startling the cat, causing it to dart. The yarn came completely out without damage. To be sure, they took the cat to the vet and it was fine. Try picturing that happening.

It was a thin thread-like string so it didn't show up on X-ray, but they assumed he had an obstruction and off to emergency surgery he went. The vet tech discovered the string as they were anesthetizing him. All wet well good and a health middle aged cat now, but I imagine every time we go to the vet he's worried about losing another body part or gaining another scar (he's a three legged cat as well).

I don't think so. I just petsit a pair of Boston Terriers. The older one's breathing is so labored. It was very sad to witness.

When I was a child, we had a Kerry Blue terrier. My mom noticed that she had something hanging out of her mouth. She pulled it out and discovered that Corky had tried to eat a stocking. She also pulled clothespins off the line (it was attached to the porch) and would bury anything that fell, including a whole sweater.

I had a Siamese cat who had serious issues with string. Any string. Once i even caught her chewing the fringe on the carpet. She had two close calls that the vet had to help her with. I ended up making her a special toy with soft natural string but i put large knots in it every 2 to 3 inches. So she could chew the string but not swallow it. Every week i cut off the chewed bits so she could chew clean string. I can relate to this issue. Poor baby and Dad. Hugz t

    Three things.
    1) I love this show and all of the vets on here.
    2) I had an Alex in kindergarten who ate glue, paper, yarn pieces, you name it lol
    3) On the American vet show “Dr. Jeff: Rocky Mountain Vet”, a dog ate metal ball bearings 3 years prior to vet removing haha dogs!

I had a workmate who had two persian cats. They got very sick and she thought she'd seen them eat tinsel from the Christmas tree.
Spent hundreds of dollars to get barium from top and bottom to see where the tinsel had got to in their GI tracts. Nope, not tinsel.
Their upset tummies were because of a change in their diets and it turned out their GI tracts were not happy.

I was amazed to see that she was a black dog underneath all of that. Aside from her face, she actually looked pretty young for 14! She definitely has that Opinionated Elder who still likes snacks vibe. You made her look fantastic! I Ander how much weight she lost just from the mats going away.

Breeders should be more concerned about strengthening the immune system and making bones stronger and trying to get rid of hip dysplasia. They shouldn't worry about a flatter face, that causes breathing problems. The animals with all those wrinkles have terrible skin infections. Hairless animals have extremely bad teeth and weak jaws. It's awful. It's animal cruelty.

The way they breed dogs makes me think of how some expensive clothes or items are so expensive and look stylish or appealing, but never focus on the actual quality and functionality of the item. Like an ASUS computer monitor that has everything inside the monitor instead of having a desktop to save space. The design looks nice, it works, it's powerful, but the actual design to make it functional is very poor because there are no vents for the hot air to escape, and you can't modify and fix the monitor without breaking it. And even if you do manage to gef it to work again, it will just burn out again after a few months due to poor design.
That's how I see dog breeding, all for looks, but don't think of functionality, as in like their most basic function which is seeing and breathing. ESPECIALY breathing.
