  • I've been waiting to make this video for so long now!
And to be truthful, I can see my opinions regarding these covers changing in the passage of time.
Welcome to 365 Days of Prog! The series in which I undertake the daunting task of listening to and reviewing 365 musically progressive albums throughout the year of 2022.
The list is made up of albums which were recommended to me by various people as their favorite albums.

They are! I cannot stress more how much I find album covers and integral part of the album's music.

The Comus cover always reminds me of me after a night out.

Guess your last two vids raise the question for me--which is worse, a classic album with a bad cover, or a bad album with a beautiful cover?

I have to agree with most of this! Now I'll give some of my own favorites too because why not!
First of all there's Stand By by Heldon, it looks very futuristic, especially for the year it was released in, I didn't believe it was from 1979 because of it! And I do agree with your opinion about it, but I usually just say that I love it because it goes hard as f*ck.
There's the second Üdü Ẁüdü cover (between the placeholder one and the newest one on streaming platforms), it's just so imposing, ominous. It's a perfect fit for songs like Zombies or De Futura, it's so impressive that it got me to check it out. I would not say that it embodies all of Zeuhl, but at least a good part of it. Ominous, heavy, spacey, futuristic, it's great for what Magma was doing.
There's Sumut by Sumé. It's a woocut of a Greenlander killing a Norseman. While it might not seem like much at first. History has to be taken into consideration, as the band Sumé almost singlehandedly sparked a social movement that led to a certain independance for Greenland. A lot of their songs talked of the horrors that the Danish had commited, and of the constant injustice and erasure of culture directed at the Inuit people. It's a powerful political statement that affirmed their identity as the Inuit, and helped almost the entire country afirm their own identity. I think it's great for that reason.
There's Katra Turana's self titled album. It mixes the feel of traditional japanese paintings with this feeling that something's off. It fits their sound pretty well, as it as Avant-Garde but retains a certain Japanese feel. And just in general, it looks great, with these strange figures in black and white contrasted against a colorful background.
There's Ghede Chokra's by Shark Move. While a lot of foreign prog covers from the 70's and even 80's were just pictures of the band members and such, due, most likely, to a lack of money, Ghede Chokra's is at the level, and dare I say even better than a lot of western album covers from that era. It's fantastic, like a legitimate painting of a mythical tale. It's intense, it looks beautiful. I love the fact that it's from an Indonesian band even more.
My favorite album covers are from Klaus Schulze. The run of albums from Irrlicht to Timewind are spectacular. Though I'm talking about the covers by Urs Amman. They are just, perfect. You're shown these quasi-horror worlds, it's like a depiction of nightmares. Cyborg has an extremely offputting cover, this sort of formless entity grasping at a planet, like some kind of eldritch god. It's terrifying and I love it. Blackdance and Timewind show you these barren worlds with strange impossible structures, you're not even sure if they're living beings or just rocks, if they're created or natural. I look at those covers and I'm taken to another world. I could look at them for hours and fantasize about those strange enigmatic worlds he's created. It also fits the music absurdly well. Those truly are the best to me. They transport me like no other, and they look truly unique.
Little fun fact! I'm working on a game, and one of the characters is based on the cover of Audentity by Klaus Schulze. I love the look a lot! I think it's really cool.
Some additional mentions from my "album covers that go hard" list are Consume Red by Ground Zero, Shell by Naikaku, Self-titled by Biglietto per l'Inferno, Self-titled by Archaïa, Self-titled and Les Morts Vont Vite by Shub-Niggurath, Android Domina by Ars Nova.

      1. Üdü Wüdü actually ended up in the 11th spot on here, so it wasn't included in the video, but I still love it to bits!
      2. I've checked out some of your picks, and they are great! I would really like to check out that "Sumut" album now...
