Andy Goldstein was making this exact same point just the other day. Second suits England, avoid one of Portugal, France, Germany. He kept pushing Cundy to agreeing that a loss somewhere would work in England's favour. Now he's claiming one of this makes sense.
I’d understand if Scotland were in another group, I’d want them to progress to meet them further down the line and then batter them.

Portugal won the Euros by playing Hungary, Austria, Iceland, Croatia, Poland and Wales before beating France in the final. it's quite reasonable to want to play the weaker teams where possible.
Why would any team not want an easier run to a final? But even saying that you still have to beat what's in front of you. Ask France about facing an easier team I'm sure there over the moon about the 1-1 draw vs Hungary.

I’m Scottish and I think we’ll get gubbed 3-0 tonight but this caller is speaking sense, England will have a much better chance of progressing if they can somehow finish second in the group so a draw would suit them - having said that, depending on the Croatia vs Czech result, finishing second could be extremely hard to manufacture. It wouldn’t surprise me if Czech beat Croatia after seeing each of their first games.

We will know before our game what our options are with regards to seconds place. Czech's play Croatia at 5. If the Czech's win, we would want to beat Scotland by 1-0 and draw with them on the last game to go second on goal difference. If Croatia win today and then beat Scotland, the best they can do is 6 points which would mean England would have to loose the last game to come second on goal difference. I don't think you can aim to finish second and if you want to win the tournament, should you be thinking like that? There's an argument for playing F2 (Portugal/Germany) early on because they've had really hard games and won't have the respite and momentum that England may have.

Goldstein makes no sense here. In his own words he would smash Scotland and then deliberately miss a penalty to lose or draw against the Czech Republic rather then draw with Scotland and play properly against the Czech’s? He was determined to make sure we didn’t finish top of the group the other night and that we had to finish second to have a better chance of going further in the tournament. I don’t understand the logic of not wanting home nations to go through and being so unprofessional as to wanting to deliberately lose the following game. I actually completely agree with the caller. I’m glad Scotland got a point although I’m infuriated by England’s performance and tactics against Scotland. Hoping we see England, Scotland and Wales all go through although Scotland’s chances are slim. I’ll always support England first over other home nations but I still want them all to do well. Most of those players play for clubs in the premiership/ championship.

Cundy’s analogy of wanting to lose and qualify for Europa League instead of Champions League because you’re not ready is so off the mark and has no bearing on this discussion. What a terrible analogy. Of course if you had the choice you want to win and qualify for Champions League not the Europa, but what Scott was talking about is qualifying for the same competition but finishing second and having an easier next round. A lot of the country will probably agree with him.
