A classic performance for MJ, although he was not quite the same player who had left the NBA in 1993, five games into his comeback Jordan shook off the rust and showed he truly was back.
Traveling to New York to face the rival Knicks at Madison Square Garden, MJ was unstoppable as he erupted for 55 points.
And he capped off his brilliant performance by setting up Bill Wennington for a dunk that gave Chicago a last-second victory.
55 points is also MJ's highest scoring performance post come back.

I remember seeing Starks in the old CBA when he played here in Cedar Rapids for the Silver Bullets. He was a spark plug and raw emotion. Sometimes it got him in trouble, like when he pushed refs. It also got him a spot on the CBA all star team and a long career in the NBA
Yeah, as a Bulls fan I hated his guts back then, but that's because he was so damn good.

If I remember correctly, tickets for this game were sold for high prices and scalped, some people paid a small fortune to be there.
I remember reading about some guy with a season ticket who was offered a lot of money but refused to sell it because he had promised it to his dad. He then disconnected his phone so he wouldn't hear how much money he could have made.

This is back when basketball was a lot more fun to watch. There are a lot of skilled players in the league today but there is something missing in today's game, probably the lack of physicality and touch foul calls.
His mid range was unstoppable once he got fired up .... crazyyyy skill and footwork 🐐
Couple of things that always stood out to me.
1. Almost every shot for the exception of maybe 3 shots in this clip were difficult. He was contested or bumped on most.
2. John Starks always played him tough. Always made him work. The problem is MJ is MJ and had the height advantage to go with that HOF skill set. You can see Starks coming up just short each time he contested because of it. Look at all the Knicks vs. Bulls clips of them going against each other and you'll see same thing. Starks giving him hell but MJ just being too damn good.
3. What separated Jordan from every player since, is he legit confuses you despite doing same thing. When you look closely it seems the same but its not. His fades have a juke or a shoulder shrug last one didn't have. Each move with a slight change that doesn't allow you to get rhythm.
There was no reason to believe he wasn't taking that last shot. He had made drives like that all game and shot. He had us set up. You could see Wennington was down low, moved not to get the 3 in the key then moved back into lane.
The difference between how 80s Jordan was a killer but how title Jordan became an assassin. Skilled precision.
4. He didn't go celebrate and forget the defensive side. He went right back to press Starks forcing the backcourt.
On a side note, it is criminal how underrated Starks was. As a knick fan people didn't fully appreciate him. From bagging groceries in Oklahoma to being an all star and being a crucial player on contending teams.
The knicks did him a disservice by not getting a second player for Ewing so Starks could settle in to a 3rd scorer role.
By the time they did, Ewing wasn't the same.
And for the people that constantly bring up game 7 against Houston, Knicks don't even sniff the finals without starks. He damn nearly won the series in game 6 with his hot shooting..
All shots he missed are shots he normally made.
Totally agree with you on Starks. The dude may not be nearly as talented as a star player, but he got a heart. For Knicks, having him to be a primary defender of MJ while also be the second scoring option was asking way too much, totally unfair to him.

Been watching Hardwood Classics last couple days (Corona Virus). I'm not sure how many fouls get called today......Vs the mid 90's.....but the game sure was easier to watch back then. Last night was Suns Vs Warriors 94' playoffs (Barkley had like 26 in the first qtr)…..and the game just flowed...refs let them play....very few complaints from the players....they just played ball.
Today, if someone turns the ball over....they complain they were fouled...if they miss a shot...they complain they were fouled....if someone dunks over them.....they complain they were fouled. Yes I know....you'll say "get off my lawn"...but maybe take this DOWN TIME to watch these old games and actually see what old men like me are talking about.
First I'm NOT a Michael Jordan fan. Watching him in the '90s denying my Knicks a chance to go the finals multiple times. I hate and rooted against him... With that said, there is no denying his greatness!
This is why I would never compare him to LeBron. LeBron is a freak of nature and deserver to be in the conversation of one of the greatest. But Mike IS the greatest.

I was 14 when this happened. When MJ came back it was like a dream for me. He struggled vs the Pacers. I dont remember if he hit the game winner vs the Hawks before of after this game but I remember I was wondering if he was gonna be as good as he was before baseball. This game answered all my questions. This game said, I'm not even in my final form and I'm levels above everyone else.

MJ tried this same type of pass at the end of G1 and G6 against the Magic in the playoffs that year and both blew up - Pippen wasn't ready for the pass in G1 and turned it over and then Longley blew the wide open layup in G6. MJ didn't pass up the game-winning shot too many times after that - except for the Kerr shot to win the '97 Finals.

Bill Russell is the best Defender of all time, which makes him a really great asset to an already great team. Jordan is the GOAT because he could do it all, passing, shooting, amazing defense, amazing athletic ability. The play at 6:52 shows his court awareness.

I'm a huge Knicks fan especially in the 90s. I never even wore a pair of Jordans. I just can't. Jordan broke my heart as a Knicks fan more than all of my exes combined. He is truly the GOAT.

My favorite part of this game came in the 3rd quarter when Pete Myers was in the post for what seemed to be days. Finally, at day break he takes a terrible fade-away which is nothing but brick. MJ was open at the top of the key and he was furious with Myers for not passing to him. He gets the rebound, takes off, and pulls up for 3. Wet! And we never saw Pete Myers again! 😂

throughout these Jordan videos you'll see bronsexuals saying "Jordan couldn't do that against good defense of today." there's literally 5 good perimeter lockdown defenders in the league today and none have the speed to stick with Jordan. Kawhi and Draymond are easily the best defenders of this era, both far too slow. Starks has his hand at Jordan's release point in every single one of these shots. Perfect defense. Nothing but the bottom of the net. Not to mention they could rough you up back in these days. I don't think there's a scorer in the game that could take a pounding and continue to ball. Maybe LeBron but all his points come in the paint and he can't even handle contact today from big men. Imagine Oakley giving him an elbow to the throat. Dude would retire. I started watching basketball because of LeBron. No one will ever top Jordan as the most gifted scorer (athletically speaking), he is top 3 for sure, considering his work ethic and competitive nature. However, Jordan overall faced more inferior defenders overall (John Stockton, Jeff Hornacek to name a few). Not denying that he would score in any era. Jordan was in a system that allowed him to focus on what he was most gifted at: scoring. 3 point shooting was one of the weaker points of jordan's game, he really excelled when the distance was shortened. There are many instances of Jordan being left wide open on defense with scoring. You talk as if someone was glued to him every second he was on the court.
If you actually watch LeBron as his game has evolved, he can score in many ways. LeBron has simply adapted to the defense of today. If Jordan played in today's era he would do the same thing. He can't handle the contact? LeBron could have played in the NFL if he wanted to. People truck him and he still gets the shot up. Not to mention the heavy minutes he's played every season through his entire career. Jordan played 15 seasons. LeBron is the greatest all-around basketball player to ever play, he is great at so many things (except free throw shooting). LeBron does far more on the court and has extreme IQ. LeBron has the ability, talent, and skill to excel in any era of basketball. Every legend and hall of famer acknowledges this about LeBron.
As a fellow "Indian" I figured you'd have more objective analysis from many angles. Very shortsighted and simple analysis. Do better next time. I remember watching this game... It was one of the best performances I’ve ever seen by any person in any sport .... This was the real “He’s back” game. Watch how good the defense is by the Knicks. This is by far the greatest performance ever in the MSG. I know Kobe has passed and even before his passing away his was a bit hyped up because of his 82 point game that season so MSG was anxious to support. Hes 2nd best performance in the Garden. I just give Jordan cause way tougher defense, HOf players on the historical team and it was done in a very close game. Thats important as terms of pressure Kobe was done in a blow out against no defense. I watched again and it was a lot of normal plays not like Jordan great defense damn near every play.

This game-and MJ's return-mean so much to me. I saw this game in a hotel room across from Shands Hospital waiting to have a procedure done. So this game is one of the few that has real significance to me personally. And even better, MJ and the Bulls won.

So what Jordan some of the best players in the game along side him when he won those championships. Obviously Jordan is the better player. Jordan is the best player that ever played the game. A lot of it just comes down to genetics. He's faster, more atheletic and has much much bigger hands and broader shoulders. Kobe and Lebron are just as smart and want to win just as bad. They're just not as good overall. Simple as that.

one thing I kick myself for is I sold my 45 jersey back in the 90's, when MJ switched back to 23. I didnt think about how it would be as a collectable later in life. I do still have my original 23 jersey though, never selling that thing.
The Knicks had eliminated the Bulls the year prior when Jordan was out. This was MJs first game against them, and he was looking for revenge.
