  • Find out more: www.ansto.gov.au - PET Scans are widely used for detecting cancers or abnormalities in brain function in humans and animals. The animation shows a small amount of a short-lived radioisotope injected into the body via a carrier molecule such as glucose. Glucose then carries the positron emitter to areas of high metabolic activity, such as a growing tumour.

I have an appointment for a PET scan tomorrow and I wanted to know what exactly will be done and how the procedure will help locate if the tumor is cancerous or not. The information helps me understand what the doctor is seeing and to prepare myself for the results. March 29, 2024 Good Friday. Prayers for healing do work.

So the tumor attracts the sugar (glucose) and use it as its food. And when you go to the doctor he doesn't tell that tumors love sugar? Not a single word about avoiding sugar?

The limit for daily sugar intake is 10 teaspoons, equivalent to 1-8oz can of soda. When reading a label take the amount of sugar and divide by 4. This is the teaspoons per serving.

Brain uses only glucose as an energy source and it uses lots of it. When fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is injected into the bloodstream your brain just uses it for energy. That's why a lot of the FDG goes into the brain and brains appear bright on PET scans.
