How to make A Leather Cowboy Hat

  • I've been paying Red Dead Redemption 2 for a few weeks, and no need to say that I love the game. So it was just a matter of time before I try and make something inspired by the game. This week, I decided to finally get to it and make Arthur Morgan's hat.
    I used 2.4mm/6oz vegetable tanned leather, dyed it black with alcohol based leather dye and applied two coats of neatsfoot oil . I really like how it turned out, and I hope you'll like the build.
    If you have any question, leave them in the comments, I'll do my best to answer them all. Till next week, keep making and thanks for watching!

    Damn right when I decided that I have my hands in too many different things and leather had to take a back seat to welding, blacksmithing, bladesmithing, woodworking, and making vinyl decals. Largely because of with the previous hobbies my hands and shop never get clean enough to do leather work. You go and post this. Now I want to make one.

    Nice job, I wanna make something similar for myself. Ive made a template out of thin cardboard to fit my head (I take a 23.5 inch cicumference hat to fit the way I want it). I have a question about the process. Does it matter if I dye the leather before or after assembly? I was thinking of using beeswax on the rough side for sweat protection and to seal up the rough leather, do you think its a good idea? Im gonna use a Pro Dye in a Show Brown for mine.

    • @RedSmith
      @RedSmith  Před 5 lety

      Thanks a lot! You can dye the leather before assembly, but don't forget the leather will shrink a little bit. I usually dye before assembly as well. You can use wax or soap and burnish the edges, but the best is to use tragacanth gum. I hope it helps :)

It looks like a rope sometimes but the part that sticks off the back of the hat in the game has some stiffness to it. Its almost like a vine but then it looks like the thicker part of the wrap was twisted around a smaller vine. Its hard to tell but i may go out in the woods and see if i can find something close to it.

You can also go to a saddle or leather shop and ask to observe for a bit. There usually willing to help expand the craft and impart alot of knowledge.
