How to make A Leather Cowboy Hat
Vložit
- čas přidán 20. 03. 2019
- I've been paying Red Dead Redemption 2 for a few weeks, and no need to say that I love the game. So it was just a matter of time before I try and make something inspired by the game. This week, I decided to finally get to it and make Arthur Morgan's hat.
I used 2.4mm/6oz vegetable tanned leather, dyed it black with alcohol based leather dye and applied two coats of neatsfoot oil . I really like how it turned out, and I hope you'll like the build.
If you have any question, leave them in the comments, I'll do my best to answer them all. Till next week, keep making and thanks for watching!

Thank you! Comments like yours keep the motivation high!
No gimmicks, no bullshit. Just a straight video showing a leather hat made. Good stuff.
Thanks a lot! Much appreciated!
Damn right when I decided that I have my hands in too many different things and leather had to take a back seat to welding, blacksmithing, bladesmithing, woodworking, and making vinyl decals. Largely because of with the previous hobbies my hands and shop never get clean enough to do leather work. You go and post this. Now I want to make one.
Haha, I know the problem, too many things I wanna build, not enough time. I tend to keep the leatherworking projects for winter, when it's too cold outside to be in the forge or in the shop woodworking ;)
Brother... You're statement hit me right in the feelers.
great video... it's my dream to have that kind of leather cowboy hat... greetings from the philippines...
Thanks a lot Michael! I appreciate it. Cheers from France!
Love the hat
Fantastic audio editing yet again!! I'm guessing that shaping the hat took a really long time to do! And it was such a good idea to start the braid on that ring! I think I'm going to borrow that tip! And that square end braid knot thing you did looks neat! Beautiful job!
Thnak you very much!! You can borrow any idea you like😊 Shaping the hat wasn't the hardest part. Making the pattern was a nightmare😊
@@RedSmith Thank you! Oh wow. For some reason I assumed you got the pattern from somewhere. I can't imagine how hard that was! You get many gold stars for that!

I looked it up on ur website and it seems way off my budget, I want to make my own but I'm scared that I might ruin it and waste all the materials.. btw I read some of these comments and it seems ur working on some patterns for this hat that I'd absolutely love to buy, when can I expect them on ur website cuz its been a few months since u last said they're gonna be coming soon... hope I wasn't bothering u
Thanks a lot. Making it right takes a lot of time. Especillay when it's for everyone to be able to make it right on the first time without wasting any material. Unfortunately I have a lot of work these days, but it will come.

Excellent work, I also do leatherwork myself and have been thinking about making Arthur's hat! Did you use some template for it?
Thank you very much! I made my own template, for my head size. But I'm sure you can find templates somewhere.
The template / pattern is now available on my website: www.theredsmith.com/online-shop
Great work man, i am trying to do one for myself and you are the only person that i found that does it with pure leather inside the hat and outside. What type of leather is this?
Thanks Marcos. I used 2.3mm thick vegetable tanned leather. Easy to find and perfect for this kind of project. Thanks for watching
Great video hope to make one one day
Thank you! I hope you will!!
This video is wonderful and I would enjoy have the hat pattern for make a white cotton version.
If it's possibile, please.
Thank you, I truly appreciate your kind words. I'm currently working on a better version of the pattern, to make the hat easier to make. I'll let you know when it's ready. Thanks for watching!
Good work dude! You videos always good for me :)
Thank you very much! I appreciate it!
Great video! I made one of these a few years ago, but it is about a quarter of an inch too tight. Any suggestions for re-sizing?
Thank you! You can make a jig with a round piece of wood and two screws. Wet the hat and put the jig in it, then unscrew the jig to enlarge the hat. I've seen a video on youtube about that a while ago :) Hope it helps
or just use the old hat on knee and pull to stretch trick, works a treat...
Arthur: what about the MUNEH John
:)
Nice job, I wanna make something similar for myself. Ive made a template out of thin cardboard to fit my head (I take a 23.5 inch cicumference hat to fit the way I want it). I have a question about the process. Does it matter if I dye the leather before or after assembly? I was thinking of using beeswax on the rough side for sweat protection and to seal up the rough leather, do you think its a good idea? Im gonna use a Pro Dye in a Show Brown for mine.
Thanks a lot! You can dye the leather before assembly, but don't forget the leather will shrink a little bit. I usually dye before assembly as well. You can use wax or soap and burnish the edges, but the best is to use tragacanth gum. I hope it helps :)
I just went for it and it turned out pretty good. Its a little different than your design, narrower brim and added wire for a more rigid edge. I have yet to dye it or treat it but Im pleased with it for my first project with leather.
@@craigells4151 well done!!😊
For those who may be wondering, this is likely 2mm vegetable tanned leather. If you try to use other types of leather, wetting it wont make it hold it's shape the same way it does for vegetable tanned leather.
2.5mm, but yes, you are correct. Chrome tanned leather wouldn't work for that. Thanks for watching
I use 4-6 ounce tooling leather for mine. Hard. But makes it really sturdy. Shaping is a process though
How do you know how big to make the pieces of leather for your hat? I have the circumference of the head that I need it to be for but I'm not sure how wide to make the brim, how tall to make the top, etc. Its being made for a 12' skeleton, the circumference is 44.5".
Trial and error with cardboard same thickness of leather.
Brilliant Red!!! That turned out crazy cool! What was the finish you applied to the hat at the end, was that something like Resolene or just more Neat's foot oil or something else entirely?
Thank you!! It's just leather neatsfoot oil. It gives it a little shine, make it softer to the touch and unifies the color of the dye.
@@RedSmith Nice job ! What kind of dye did you use to paint ? Is the template available? TY
@@sandrohumberto Thanks! I used leather dye. The template will be available soon on my website.
Absolutely beautiful! You make it look so easy to build. One question: How did you determine what size to make the hat?
Thank you Donna. It's not that hard. Making the pattern is :)
The inner diameter of the rim is more or less the size of the hat. It depends on how you sew the rim to it.
@@RedSmith no they aren’t.
@@RedSmith says not available :(
I'm remaking them so the hat is easier to make. Will be soon available again.
I'm remaking them so the hat is easier to make. Will be soon available again.
That is a fine hat mister, I wish I can have that.
Thanks a lot! You can if you have the budget for it, or you can make you own :)
I was genuinely surprised that you didn't do anything to the brim. But, it's a gorgeous hat.
It's just an aesthetic choice. You can add a piece of leather all around but I thought it looked more like the one in the game without it :) Thanks for watching!
Did you use 8-10 ounce leather and how do i go about measuring my head so that it fits comfortable?
I used 5-6oz veg tan leather. I found it to give the best results for a hat. If you measure it around your head, just above the eyebrows, it should fit perfectly.
That is just phenomenal! Ever thought of making it worn like Arthur's?
Thanks a lot! I tought it would worn out with time
@@RedSmith Oh, alright! Cool! Planning to make one myself and have it worn thats why♡
Keep on doing what you love!~♡
I found that getting it to that black fade to brown look is done by dying it dark brown. Then using 2 coats of black. Use fiebrings leather sheen to finish it as it removes a bit of dye. And there you have it
@@ethansmith8813 Oh lord I forgot to share it when I had it done, its not the best but I did end up being this for Halloween long ago!

Thanks a lot. I spent hours making my own :)
@@RedSmith I'm trying to learn Pattern making at the moment, the maths really escapes me XD
@@cakecakeham5823 Ellipses are cery hard to make. Trial and error is a good way to finally make it😊
My grandfather gave me a black stetson that looks just like arthurs. I wear it all the time but i want to get the hat wrap that arthur has but i cant figure out what it is. It looks like a rope sometimes but the part that sticks off the back of the hat in the game has some stiffness to it. Its almost like a vine but then it looks like the thicker part of the wrap was twisted around a smaller vine. Its hard to tell but i may go out in the woods and see if i can find something close to it.
It's brown leather strips braided together. A 4 strand round braiding to be precise. Thanks for watching.
I plan on making this hat out of leather I made myself I want it to be a dark brown color with a bit of a shine on it just like that one what do you recommend? Love the video btw👍
Sounds great! I recommend a brown leather dye (water based) and the Eco-Flo super Shene for finish :) Good luck with your build and thanks for watching!
I have some tanned leather that is already the correct color for the hat. However, the leather is very soft and flimsy. Is there any way that I can stiffen it so that the color and texture will not be ruined? I do not have a whole lot of experience with leather btw
You could glue a second layer underneath to make it stronger or just apply leather hardener. I used it a couple of times and it works very well.
gooooooooooooooooooooooood job
Thanks a lot!!!
Awesome build! Is there any way to get the templates, or measurements of the pieces you used to build the hat?
