Cut up your old inner tubes and use it as a spacer. I'd go with drive belts instead of chains. And that grip wont work, itll kill your wrist. Try find a thumb throttle from a quad. Id fit a kill switch to the seat so if you fall out it wont run away without you. Theres a gear calculator on line 5o help you with pulley size from your motor rpm/wheel speed/ weight so you can work out it's best chance

Also, maybe wrap the motor in rubber so that it can enlarge the diameter to fit more snug into the motor mount area, while also dampening shock because of the rubber.

Just a thought work regards to the steering rod. What you need is one of the ball joints to have a left hand thread, so when you adjust the bar, it either pushes both ends out or pulls both in. It's the same principle as a double ended tie rod on car steering, enabling the length of the bar to be adjusted without removing one end of the bar.

Another gem Matt, re the "original" keyboard its a bit like Trigger and his "original" road sweeping broom! btw Sir Clive's nephew has bought out an updated version of your C5. Its called The Iris and uses an 8-speed derailleur transmission and there's a 250W hub motor laced into the rear wheel. The trike carries a big 960Wh battery claiming about 30 miles.

You could remove some material form the motor clamping faces (near the bolt) to allow it to clamp a smaller diameter than before - albeit slightly out of round. Also if you google spares for electric scooters you will likely get a chain and possibly a sprocket that you can add to the rear axle. As for the speed control labels, lol, google the controller model and probably you'll find some further details about the connectors. All the best

While examining vintage microcars at the Lane Museum in Nashville, several thoughts came to mind, such as, “How tiny,” “How simple,” “How fascinating,” and “What a miserable way to travel.” All apply to the C5, in my view, but what a cool project! I look forward to seeing it scuttle about under its own power. Also, I didn’t miss the common thread linking the chassis of your Delorean model and the frame of the Sinclair. Lotus! Thanks for yet another good’n.

It's getting there! One of the steering rod ends needs to be a left hand thread, which means cutting threads on a piece of plain steel rod. That way, when you rotate the rod, it will either draw both ends together or push them apart and you can adjust the steering. And use lock nuts. Really looking forward to seeing more. 😊👍

    @fhwolthuis Před 3 lety

Great video, I love this project! 😍
I would try to fabricate a metal strap to hold the motor in place, the plastic one will be very brittle after 40 years and it will get a lot more torque to handle. As for the drive I would try the chain route first. Also because the enormous torque increase and its easier to have a sprocket made up or altered from a bicycle or something and you can easily make a matching chain yourself. Maybe even add a tensioner from a racing bicycle. And some disk brakes from a mountain bike or scooter to the rear axle?
So what are the next steps? Painting and rust proofing of the frame etc?

For a battery, how about two 18v power tool batteries? I’ve no idea if they would have enough “oomph” (technical term😉), but if they did it would be far easier to charge/swap batteries whenever you needed. Plenty of cheap replacement drill batteries out there too - there’s a high demand from tradespeople that has driven prices down. Plenty of charging station type things out there too. So long as they’re easily accessible you could easily change them over, and maybe even carry charged up spare batteries as range extenders? Repeated discharge/recharge cycles don’t seem to be an issue either.
Just a thought- I know next to little about electrics so this maybe isn’t even feasible.

i (i again, thats wrong isn't it?) have a bare sinc also. and want to do such a concersion also.
in the Netherlands it's legal to have assistance untill 25km/h and only if the driver cycles the pedals then it's considered an e-bike hand throttle is illegal, well i think to know throtlle it's permitted to 5-6 km/h purely for starting up.(the walk allong mode) (and in special occasions if it's medically required, the full throttle range is allowed.)
but in normal circumstances you are only allowed to cycle faster ofcourse but then 25km/h but then the motor has to go in freewheel mode. with the E-bike kits you can experience this on the display with a small wattage use of approx 8 or 9 watts just to keep the (hub)motor spinnin' a bit, so it will not resist.
and if we want to go faster and powered on an E-bike above 25km/h the bike is situated in the Speed-pedelic range. and it needs a licence-plate and vin on it's own. and the driver needs to wear atleast an approved cycle helmet. and own an small moped drivers licence (wich we also need to ride a yamaha-Neo's or a Puch maxi or such) and it needs to be insured.

Could drive it with a chain. Much easier to change the length.

Are you going to be able to do a Part 4 of this project, and get the C5 operational? Or have you lost interest in it? 😄

I heard that, but somehow doubt it -- far from ideal for using with a 12V battery!

@@furiousdriving Fair enough. I think it would be interesting to try to fit a mid-drive E-Bike motor to a C5. That way the chain from the front would be driving everything.

Do you own a Furious Driving Crash Helmet Matt? It's beginning to look like this could potentially be a Sinclair 500. Maybe investigate drogue chute.

Pls pls pls center the tires on them wheels. I'm guessing you have never changed a bike tire. you have to fit the bead evenly around the rim. not fit them with one side of the tire bulging out of the wheel and the other side way into the rim as you have them. I watched the video where you fitted them and thought you would have them sorted by now from comments but nope. I don't know how you don't see how off center them tires are!!!.
