Living debt free and being content is wonderful. I remember when I retired at 62 a coworker said to me that I must have millions and that’s why I’m retiring. I asked her if she had one of those fancy flat screen TVs hanging on her wall and she replied of course she did. I said that mine was a $5 used one from a yard sale and that is why I can retire.

I like the way you said something like we can be joyful even when we aren't happy. My twin sister and best friend passed away within 18 months of each other and I struggle daily with the depression that has come with that. I recently found a small metal sign that reads, "If you can't find the sunshine, be the sunshine. That's my new goal! 😃😃😃

@@maurawhelan3530 Thanks. It means more than you even know, for I truly only hit on the highlights. It's been a rough couple of years not only for me, but so many people. That's why, I
have to start moving. I read a comment on another post that said something like grieving is like someone threw a heavy weighted blanket on you. At first it immobilizes you until you get used to it and can start to move again. You can't shake it off or crawl out from under but eventually God, in His mercy, strengthens us so that we can even attempt to take a step. I'm slowly starting to move again. It's still hard, even seems impossible some days but it is happening. 🌈🌈🌈

I so commend you and your family for how you are living. You and your hubby are light years ahead of so many young adults like you. They have no clue about being debt free and buckling down to get the things that really mean something. Half of all young girls don’t know how to cook. If they open a can or put something in the microwave, that’s home cooking. Keep going on the path your on and I see good things coming your way.

Be encouraged 😊 I did the same thing. I bought a little house for 100% cash. The foundation was crumbling, the roof leaked and the living room and bedroom ceilings were ruined, the gas line needed replaced, the electricity needed to be upgraded, the roaches/ spiders were plentiful and HUGE, the carpet was FILTHY, holes in the walls and a bed of snakes lived under my kitchen. I didn't have a working heating system or water heater. It was on the market for over a year. The neighbors were unfriendly. I knew my family wouldn't be in agreement so I bought it then told them about it. I lived the first winter in only one room as that was the only one I could afford to heat.
I like you decided to never be in debt again through Dave Ramsey. I AM SOOO GLAD THAT GOD BLESSED ME WITH THIS HOUSE..I am slowly cash flowing the repairs..and I am learning patience...I also ignore the naysayers. Also I am learning to thank God for everything..my neighbors have mice..I don't because of the snakes.By the way they don't bother me.😂

You are such a joy to watch and I'm so glad I found your channel. I can identify with your situation in some ways, although some of the details are different. I'm a single mother, and part of my decision to not have a mortgage was actually because I didn't have much of a choice. The rent on my apartment was about to go up, and I just didn't think it was worth it. I tried to get a mobile home, but was not approved for a loan without a big down payment, which I did not have. So I bought an old travel trailer with what little money I had saved. It has had so many issues, and sometimes I really miss the comforts I used to enjoy. But I remind myself that I live mortgage and rent free, which is something most people can't say. It will take a while to get this trailer fixed up, but with the help of my dad and brother, it will eventually be more comfortable. For now, I believe God is refining me with each struggle, because every time something is fixed, that thing that most people take for granted now feels like a luxury to my daughter and me. It is such a blessing to go without and then have it restored. You and your family are in my prayers. You are such an inspiration to me and to so many others.

I am a 95 year old woman who remembers the great depression of 28. It is interesting that the lifestyle you consider frugal would have been considered comfortable in those years. All 6 of the people who live here can shower within minutes of each other. We have hot water for dishes whenever needed….I think of what an adjustment it would be to have a regular water heater. And what an adjustment it would be to not have one for weeks or months!

  • @VelvetRedRoses

I don’t think that this is radically frugal. It’s a way to build a life one brick at a time. If one goes into debt to have a home and vehicle, the operating budget is much smaller thus debt is a burden. Getting rid of a debt burden as quickly as possible is only sensible. Living below one’s means is logical. A mortgage can be paid off in 7 years and perhaps that is the answer for some. This is an amazing story and I certainly commend this family for their unique approach. This young woman is delightful and tells us the structure from which their decisions are made. Goals, structure, planning . . . That’s how people who are thoughtful can move through life in a way that brings security, comfort, and joy but one must be bold to move forward and expect challenges and set-backs along the way.

Another question, How does radically frugal change the family tree, beyond being debt free? For eg. I know people who are radically frugal so that they can save Ns retire early, or so that they can give a lot of money away....but I've never heard od being radically frugal by choice unless of course the means are small enough to neccesitate that. Isn't it ok if people are frugal and well off?

This is another fantastic question. For us, it’s not about early retirement or even giving it away but rather building generational wealth for our children and their future generations. And we wish to do it in an honest way without stacking debts to make it happen. We also appreciate the knowledge and skills that can be taught with living a frugal life over an easier lifestyle ☺️

Ok that makes sense. I was under the impression you did not want to build wealth . My mistake!

It was just one of many auction sites for the state of West Virginia. A google search of auction companies in your state should bring them up :)

@TheProductiveHomemaker Are they home auction sites? Are there any free home auction sites?
Unfortunately, I have never been able to figure this out, although I desperately want to retire into a lifestyle like yours.

So when your husband lost his job and you were pregnant how did you cover the birth of your baby? I’m alway curious on how debt free *young people* live..One couple I follow are debt free/mortgage free, own a home but decided to put it on the market and temporarily traveling , her husband lost his job so he gets unemployment instead of getting a job they are traveling and camping at different spots..she showed us her budget and she has 3-kids all 3 are on state insurance.. so they are living the dream of not having to worry about paying for things like healthcare when anyone knows 1-incident can cost $1000’s to $10,000’s of thousands of dollars..heck ..most people that do have health insurance e have HIGE deductibles into the $1000’s yearly. So I’m interested to know if you are on any public assistance.
