FIRST DRIVE: Porsche Macan Turbo - As Fast As A 911 GT3!

- This is Porsche’s most important launch since the Mk1 Cayenne. Why? Because even as a decade-old model at the end of its life, Porsche shifted 87,355 units of its smaller SUV in 2023, just a few hundred shy of the Cayenne.
But now the second-gen Macan is going electric, and the buying public hasn’t wholly embraced EVs…
Perhaps more challenging still, while the last Macan was priced from £54k to £73k in the UK, the new one starts at £70k and runs up to exactly £95,000 for the range-topping Turbo model (which doesn’t have a turbocharger anywhere near it). Sure, you get more performance, but the last Macan was a (relatively) affordable entry point into practical Porsche ownership; the new one is only £600 cheaper than a Cayenne!
So it’s electric, and expensive.
Can the tech impress and the dynamics dazzle enough to tempt potential buyers? Top Gear Magazine’s Tom Ford has the answers…

You definitely should consider it. I have never been keen on Macans but as a bev it appeals much more. It will sell as Macan owners don't really care about what's powering it.
Turbochargers started out rare, expensive, and definitely something to brag about with a big "Turbo" badge.
Recently, so many gas engine vehicles have turbos that manufacturers often don't bother to promote that aspect.
Now the badge "Turbo" doesn't even necessarily mean the car has one at all.
Time marches on.
Emissions made turbos a common thing, if you don't have them your stuck with a slow small engine car. I don't like that they put "turbo" on an EV it makes no sense 🤦♂️ basically defeats the purpose of the term turbo in a turbo car.
It's an iconic, retro name that Porsche has been using for decades. They will continue using it, even when all cars are EVs as a reference to the past. In Porsche's world, 'Turbo' = most powerful model. Just get over it.
I don't think I could bring myself to buy an electric car with a 'turbo' badge.
Retarded turbo name usage.. Should be GTS-E.. I bought the wife a Cayenne Turbo we had it for years it was a real turbo Porsche with a V8 twin turbo it was a great SUV..

The thing is, like the Taycan, that the top spec models will feel exactly like the base model unless you're flooring it. And it's so quick that you can only do that on a track. Except no one takes their SUV onto a track. So the base model is the one to get.
Yes, but difference is base model has many option boxes to check, where the top model has less option boxes to check, to get the same interior furnishings. Just make sure you get all your check boxes clicked.
they will buy one to get alocations on the next GT2RS and next E hyper car that's already irelevant

Yep, and they depreciate SO MUCH. With ICE's, the top models are typically V6 or V8's, so you get a noticeable difference in the characteristics of the car. You know for sure any person driving an EV Turbo model is just flexing that he has money to waste.
8:22 not particularly clever chemistry? Lol! CATL would be upset. That's a very good state of the art NMC811-Graphite with Silicon doped, and constructed for great energy and power density, there is a reason you get 10 to 80% in 21 mins which is not entirely due to 800V arch (it helps but not as much as people think), but due to chemistry, cell electrical impedance, cooling at pack/Module level, etc. 800V helps more on the non cell system like less heat from the busbars, current collectors etc..
Nobody is using prismatic. There is a reason why. One hit and the car goes up in flames.

You would think that Porsche would have learned by the lack of sales of the Taycan! I’ve been a Porsche owner for much of my life and the idea of driving an electric Porsche is….uninspiring to say the least! I’ve owned my 928 for 27 years and still get chills hearing that beautiful V8 engine!

@@srinitaaigaura tbf it probably is good for the lighting itself, since the lights are further down and therefore can shine further. Higher mounted lights shine on a higher down angle.
But it looks ugly, and atleast from my experience modern LED Matrix lights don't care about that stuff that much (Used to notice with similar xenon lights in an ML vs. S-Class back in the day)

I like the design, I just don’t know how many Porsche customers will want to switch to EV. I feel like this was a risky move with their highest selling car.
I think its easily the most desirable electric SUV. It ticks all the boxes for me

@@luciussander8217stop spreading misinformation. It is based on the Q6 e-tron, not the SQ6. The SQ6 e-tron starts at £93,000 with 490hp. The Macan Turbo starts at £95,000 with 650hp. The Macan is a much better deal. For just £2,000 more, you get 160hp more, rear wheel steering and a Porsche, not an Audi.

I have a 911 turbo S and an Audi RS6 Performance, the Audi hasn't been back to the dealer three times for problems. You come across as a bit of a ... well it's a word that sounds like Banker. @@luciussander8217 I meant to say that it's not based on the Q5. I don't know why I typed SQ6 at the beginning. Also, your reading skills are terrible. I said that the Macan EV is a much better value than the SQ6 e-tron on which it's based. Like I said, for 2k more, you get 160hp more than the Audi which makes the Audi look overpriced. By the way, I am a massive Audi guy. It is literally my favourite car brand, and always was, ever since I was 5 years old or something. I don't know how you came to the conclusion that I dont like Audi. Also, the old Macan and the Q5 may be based on the MLB platform, but they drive differently, they were designed for different buyers and some engines are different.
Can't wait until these depreciate 50% in the first year or two. Maybe down 75% by year 4.

The top ones are not the headlights - they are the signature lights. The lower ones are the actual lights. Lots of automakers doing this - love it or not - including BMW, Stellantis, Hyundai/Kia, and many more.
Worst design trend in Automotive history.
It's like if the face of the car lost its point of reference. You always look at someone in the eye. If a car has 4 (6?) "eyes", how do I look at it?
No car looks good with this. And it just make every car seems generic. Take off the Porsche logo and this becomes a Hyundai/Chevrolet/Generic Chinese car immediatly.
@@ramtzzo Designers do it because it allows for more expressiveness in the light signature and modern LEDs can be packaged in small spaces. That's as simple as it is.

If LEDs allows packaging in small spaces, why then increase the headlamp area on the front fascia?
For me it looks like they just do it because they can and because some buyers demand novelty over beauty or elegance.
Now this Porsche looks like any generic SUV.

Is it comfortable? is it quiet to drive? is it refined for that price? Not every day is track day, so would be good to hear more about how it behaves in real life usage.

@@Bobsk3 It's an SUV with a Porsche badge, so one expects comfort and refinement. If you want something more focussed for daily use and practicality, get an Audi RS6 or something like that. As I did.

I’m not sure how fair it would be to compare a hatchback to an SUV. Especially if the hatchback weighs 532 pounds less.

Actually looks really nice, I think Porsche have misjudged the timing on going all-electric with it though. Feels like the electric backlash is well under way and I think they might struggle to sell them
Can’t understand why would design the rear camera to stick up and be invisible whole time. Why not hide the rear camera under the spoiler. Where is the roof spoiler? wich would make the look less bald…. There is so many ugly and wrong details witch make me question about is Porsches head of design fit to job….

The old Mecan was a classy and elegant looking car with good lines and a good road presence - this is like one of those generic SUV's you see driving around in a video game.

Its a cool car but unfortunately very expensive for what you get.. A lease over here starts at ~1350 per month, which is almost DOUBLE what I'm currently paying for my BMW I4 (which is NOT half the price to buy, if you might wonder)

I miss the old trio for sure but their time doing it was coming to an end either way. I def wouldn’t want to see them in 2024 still doing the same stuff just older and fatter and less charming-er.

I'll stick with my 3.6 twin turbo petrol Gen1 Macan for now - but this review has brought me closer to EV consideration that anything so far.
This beats the new testa 3 performance...and looks much much better from all sides and angles, inside out.

@@Profvlc99 truedat. Tesla is trying to buy the market with lower prices, hence their relatively low margin in the last quarter. Tesla's fleet of cars are getting old. It's like Nissan, keeping the same model for a decade or more. Wonder how long it will take until Tesla starts making an interior that is actually appealing to people. The car looks like a communist version of a car.

I love this car. I think itd be impossibly backwards to chose other clunky EV trucks like the hummer or cybertruck, once you see this beauty manage its weight so well.

The loss of those classic Porsche headlights and that beautiful clamshell hood on the older Macans is almost too much to take.

Why do we always get told about the driving of the top of the tree spec turbo ( with the air springs / four wheel steering - every option etc )- we need a broader understanding of the base / middle car and the cost / worth of the options.
They should let you know the miles per KW achieved on the road test rather than talking about pie in the sky WLTP numbers

Macan EV:
Cost per mile = Cost per kWh / Miles per kWh = $0.25 / 4.2 miles/kWh = $0.0595 per mile
Current Macan ICE:
Assuming 20 mpg (approx last gen Macan) in which a gallon costs $3.89:
Cost per mile = Cost per gallon / Miles per gallon = $3.89 / 20 miles/gallon = $0.1945 per mile
Let's consider a hypothetical distance, say 100 miles:
Macan ICE cost for 100 miles = $0.1945 per mile * 100 miles = $19.45
Macan EV cost for 100 miles = $0.0595 per mile * 100 miles = $5.95
So, over 100,000 miles, the electric vehicle would save approximately $14,526.24 compared to the gas-powered car. Assuming a depreciation of 50% (I'm being generous), that will offset depreciated value by roughly 16% over 100,000 miles of ownership.
Assuming they depreciate at the same rate.
The car has worse depreciation by more than the total fuel used in 4 years in the ice model. Not including this car needs 13k of options to compete with a stock Tesla 3 😂

@@PaulEubanks every EV competes with Tesla. A Porsche with a battery and Bosch motor system isn’t really a Porsche any more is it. It’s mostly an Audi with a Porsche party dress on. If this was a real Porsche it wouldn’t be looking at a depreciation of 52% in 36 months. That’s horrific by any brand standards and worse for Porsche. Taycans are now worthless for same reason.

From my perspective (as a person who loves Porsche but after having Tesla could never go back to ICE vehiche) this is as perfect as car can get. Pretty much everything Tesla has but with Porsche's superior handling, style and quality.

Why laugh? ...a Sound made by an ICE is created from acoustic Designers, too. Remove the exaust pipe...the acoustic body like from an Violine... and it sounds awful.
They create exact the Sound an OEM asks for...BMW, Audi etc.
And I can tell, I love electric music ... all pure Fake Sound, too!!!

I really wanted to try Macan EV but the headlight design is a big nono for me. Will stick with my 2021 GTS.
*Audi needs to cool their phone charging compartment too. The wireless charger in my RS Etron GT just cooks my iPhone and causes it to shut off ..I rarely use it for that reason and just use a USBC. Unfortunately, with your phone plugged in there is no good place to put it.*

The yellow one looks like a bigger version of the new Renault 5 with the light arangement.
The reason I'd never get this (outside of depreciation), is that the Macan S (gas) is cheaper and faster than a Macan 4 (electric). And I'd never drop the money for a turbo.
Yet, the Macan EV is cheaper if bought via salary sacrifice for higher earners like myself, while also being cheaper to run.

First 3 years, 7-8%, first 10 years 10-12%. After that they just stop basically. Negligible after that

Dont underestimate how important the continued volume of Macan sales is to Porsche. The SUVs support their ability to produce the real sports car line. If this big gamble fails (very likely) the company has trouble.

@@Stricks823it looks nothing like an Urus but anyways. Wait until you learn that Volkswagen owns 75% of Porsche. Porsche owns 53% of Volkswagen. Volkswagen owns Audi, which in turn owns Lamborghini, Bentley and Ducati. Volkswagen also owns SEAT, Cupra, Skoda, many Chinese brands and MAN and Scania who make many trucks and buses in Europe. Porsche also owns 45% of Bugatti Rimac.
