    Imagine taking the best football players in the world and putting them on a pitch with no defence players.
    Although defenders aren’t as exciting as strikers, we all underestimate their ability to help a team win.
    When it comes to managing our mental health, the defenders are the basics.
    Usually we roll our eyes when a parent tells us to eat our greens or go out more. We know what would help us but we don’t do it.
    Because when we feel low our defence players are the first things to go; we stop exercising, we withdraw from friends and start eating junk food. Because what difference does it make?
    It turns out, a huge difference. Because letting the basics slide is like taking your defence players out and leaving an open goal.
    But we don’t have to get the basics perfect and there’s not really a one size fits all approach to how we balance them.
    The important thing to note is that they work together to help us have cash in our health bank and to remain upright when life tests us.
    If you’re rolling your eyes already because you think you’ve heard what I’m about to tell you already, then it’s even more crucial you hear it again.
