  • Fernando Alonso will go down in F1 history as one of the greats, but his career was rarely straightforward. In this video Edd Straw charts the ups and downs from the double world champion's career, from his emergence at the back of the grid with Minardi, to his success with Renault, two controversial stints with McLaren and a Ferrari stint that promised so much and never quite delivered. Which of his non-title-winning seasons was as good as his championship years of 2005-06? Find out what we think by watching the video, and let us know in the comments what you think were his best and worst moments!

    Alonso is definitely one of the best drivers, no doubt. He has the capability to make lesser cars shine like well polished turds. Unfortunately his insistence or running things his way and public, scathing criticisms of his teams means that he often burns bridges wherever he goes. • @djoetma
      @djoetma Před 4 lety +19

      @@jimmymagic2438 'Now we can fight'. That car was the slowest on the grid several times. Alonso really thought it was just the engine at McLaren-Honda while Button was able to tell that it was more. Proof of that we saw in the first year they ran the Renault (and no, that car wasn't build for the Honda, they decided to leave Honda very early the year before). Chief Forghieri said that Alonso can't develop a car. Google it, you'lll find it. And we also saw proof that he's not able to work in a team. Rosberg talked about his political games, the tweet is probably still there, google it. Chandhok in his Q+A for DriveTribe said it as well and Horner in the Beyond the Grid podcast. And these are just some examples.
      Alonso was really fast on-track, apart from that he's simply terrible. Can't develop a car, no technical skills, can't work in a team, can't manage a team.
      But hey, the entire grid is probably wrong, right? Ferrari didn't want him even for free (against the mechanics' will, I'm sure), RBR didn't even want to talk to him.

    Alonso is the full package, on and off the track. I have never seen a title campaign like 2012. Absolutely superb. With that dog of a car he took the fight to Vettel (on a far superior car) to the very last race and lost it by 3 points. I wonder what Vettel would have done had they switched places...
    That’s what sets him apart from the rest, his ability to squeeze everything out of a bad car, adapting his style. And outside of the car he was always an entertaining character, very expressive (sometimes too expressive) unlike most robots in full PR mode.
    He surely has his flaws, and I believe he himself made the bed where he lays now (multimillionaire double world champion, the poor bastard...)

Alonso dominated 2005 and his only real flaw in his career is Lewis narrowly outperforming him 2007. I think Alonso would eventually wear Lewis down, but clearly the other happened quickly. Alonso was one the best drivers, but he made bad decisions:
    _Leaving Mclaren at the end of 2007 while it was a top team
    _Not joining Red Bull in 2008 while there was Adrian Newey knowing that there were new regulations
    _Leaving Ferrari at the end of 2014. He probably knows that he missed the chance to win the 2017 and 2018 championships
    _Choosing to stay at McLaren at the end of 2016 while there was a seat available at Mercedes.
    2010 was his best shot at Ferrari. I think he could have won the 2010 championship if he didn't waste points in Monaco, Valencia, Silverstone, Spa. But ultimately, the team chose the wrong strategy in the last race.
