What Beethoven and The Beatles have in common

  • Disney+ documentary about The Beatles (Get Back) is among us and as a HUGE fan, I couldn't help but making this video to compare them to the figure that innovated in a similar way in their own different field: Beethoven. Because technically neither of them "invented" anything, but they both pushed the symphony and the rock album to such extent that they completely influenced and change music after them.

Another great video from you :) I am enjoying the diversity of the content above all else on your channel. I'm also very interested in the one hour long video that you made at your first attempt. I'm sure it will contain many more good common points between these 2 fantastic music pillars

Thanks a lot! I did have a lot of points I could have made but sometimes you gotta pick a few and edit it down :) But I left a lot of material on the description for anyone interested in learning more

I'm a huge fan of Beethoven and one morning I put on the Eroica, and in the first few seconds it suddenly struck me that (at that time) this was entirely new. The world had not heard such sounds until Beethoven created them. The first time I heard the Beatles on the radio (I wanna hold your hand) the first few seconds sounded entirely new; like nothing I had heard before, and they kept making it new the whole time they were together.

The Beatles' use of sting quartets always impressed me.

Maravilloso video!!!. Tengo casi la misma edad de los Beatles y recuerdo que lloré cuando se separaron. Note el paralelismo con Beethoven en los 60's. Mil gracias.

    Great video!
I love both. I think Beatles was very important to the development of pop music, and Beethoven was very important to music in general. I think you can do another parallels like this one, always mixing classical/pop artists that invented or created something new in different times but with same energy; something like Liszt and Jimmy Hendrix, etc. It would be amazing!

Thanks! I actually really enjoy doing this comparisons cause it’s interesting to see how we are all humans just living in different times and doing things based on our context… I have some others planned, but I gotta say Jimmy Hendrix and Liszt sounds very cool 😎

To keep the comparison within the realm of "classical" music: with all due respect to and love for Wagner, I find that Schubert's "Der Doppelgänger," with the sparsest of conceivable means, has just as great an emotional impact as the "Ring"!

Very interesting video. I just suscribe to your channel, I have to say "thank you" to the algorithm, because I was watching "TwoSetViolin" channel when yours was recommended.
I don´t like comparisons too much because is easy to miss the point when someone compares two different composers from two different moments of Music History, but in this case, I believe that have sense.
I love both Beethoven and The Beatles, but I must say, it was a long journey to understand and enjoy them. I'm a big fan of "Sgt Pepper" and "Revolver" albums, they are my favorites.
But as you said, both pushes the music an step forward and became references to composers that came later. The shadow of Beethoven on the XIX century was notably extended, even to the very beginning of the XX century where the last string quartets made sense to people that was working on serial music. The same with The Beatles, there a lot of bands or soloist that want for their music the freshness of the early albums or the coherent structure of the latest ones.

My late brother worshipped Beethoven and ..Elvis. Nearly right! (I am less single-minded, BTW)

Great Video. Really enjoy it. As to why people rank music's or musicians, I think it is commercial, it is just advertisement. People just need to see that to find a meaning of listening to something. It may not be a bad thing, because some people may listen to something as it is said it is a top rated something. And it may not be great either due to the fact you said in the video.
