- Today we are finally examining the backstory of the most complex member of the Furious Five in my 500th video on Wotso Videos! We are discussing Kung Fu Panda’s ferocious, hardcore, and hardened Master Tigress. Everything we know from Legends of Awesomeness to Secrets of the Scroll and Secrets of the Furious Five, we are going to finally understand how she was molded by being an orphan and being taught by Master Shifu in the Jade Palace.

After all that she goes through, Tigress could've EASILY become another Tai Lung.
But she chooses not to. This resilience is why I have so much respect for her.

She also wasn’t traumatized the same way Tai lung was, she knew where she stood at the get go where as Tai Lung was held on a pedestal and told he would be the dragon warrior only to have that taken away. Tigress was never told that she would be the dragon warrior only that she was in training to be considered

Kung fu Panda really likes giving most of their characters tragic. Po, Tigress, Shifu, Tai Lung and Shen all have sad back stories that make you feel for them whether their heroes or villains
*Even though Shen is my favourite character, his backstory wasn't sad unless he felt sorrow after being banished.*

shen's backstory wasn't sad. as far as we know, he had a good life. his parents loved him and he had everything handed to him; he just wanted more power, which makes him such a great villain.

@@tigeronthehill7252 As this video mentions, Tigress's list of kung fu masters accidentally gets swapped with a list of possible jobs Po has made for himself (comedian, dancer, cleaner and doctor). Tigress then went looking for four people who fit those job descriptions instead of the actual kung fu masters... and those were the four people that helped her defeat the boar. So if it hadn't been for Po's job identity crisis, Tigress would have just brought back four kung fu masters instead of Crane, Mantis, Snake and Monkey.

All of her life, Tigress was seeking someone to give her approval, happiness and love,something what she didn't occasionally received from her broken father-figure and what even the title of the Dragon Warrior could have never given to her. Only Po's appearance into her life eventually gave her what she has been seeking.
They can be a great couple though 😊
I was thinking about what the 4 kung fu panda could be and I think it might be about love. Hear me out. In the first movie the relationship that increased was masters relationship between po and shifu and shifu with oogway. The second one was with friends like with tigress. And the 3 one is about relationship with his dads. What else is missing with master, family, and friends. The one that is missing is love. Idk just a thought. maybe the love could be tigress

Tigress is such a beautifully tragic character. Like, yeah if you take into account the way she was treated before and how she treated Po in the first movie, she would seem a hypocrite at first glance. But, if you look closer, you would see that she had been training all her life to be good enough, and when the time where she would finally be recognized for her talents and all of her hard work, she was passed by for Po, who was definitely not on the same level. Because of that, she was hurt, and lashed out on the scapegoat, Po.

Something curious that a lot of people don´t know is that the story gives you a lot of clues of Master Tigress origins before she was abandoned by her parents at the orphanage. All the evidence seem to suggest that she was indeed, a princess, from a far away and distant kingdom ruled by tigers. This has a lot of sense when you notice that in the only scene where we can actually see her parents, they were wearing the imperial colors (Yellow and black) that in China were reserved exclusively for the Emperor, and their clothes also look very similar to the robes emperors used to wear. Also, when Po was writing where the Five Warriors should be found, he wrote that in a cleaner (Crane), a comedian (Monkey), a dancer (Viper), a doctor (Mantis) and a princess (Who else could it be but tigress?). Apparently they were planning to reveal this in the third movie, but they simply didn´t found time and just gave us another small clue by dressing tigress as her parents.

Yeah. Maybe her kingdom was under attack and that's why her desperate parents leave her in that orphanage distant from any place where they could find her, hopping for her to some day discover her origins and return to claim the throne that was meant to be hers.

I, myself, cant beleive I live so long without knowing Tigress is a princess like WOAW, yes there must be a film about her and her origins and maybe ( I so long for that) a better father/daughter relationship with Shifu when she can finally get the parent's love she deserves and Shifu can realise the mistakes he made
I didn't know they expanded her backstory somemore. She is so intresting, and the weight of when she found out of not being the dragon warrior. It is even more crushing. This is such a gold video, and congrats!

Tigress is always one of my favorite characters in the Kung Fu Panda universe! 🐯 Her backstory is so sad - with being abandoned she felt unworthy and undeserving of love and a family. But she not only finds a loving family within Shifu and the Furious 5, she grows up to learn balance within herself and worked to become the self-motivated, amazing, and dedicated, strong warrior she is!! Such a fearless character 🙌

There's always something alluring about Tigress. Admirable, tough, intelligent, and stoic for a reason.
Idk why, but I find it interesting that Tigress was not chosen to be the Dragon Warrior. The Tiger and the Dragon were designed to be opposites. Of course, it would be cool to bridge that gap by making a tiger become a dragon warrior.

@@Apocalypsepioneer That's from the newest of the KFP shorts, it's called "Secrets of the Scroll.", and it more or less details how the five formed. It's currently on Netflix, and it came out at around the same time that the third movie came out, some of the other clips came from Secrets of the Furious Five, and a few "Bits" from LOA. Mostly, Secrets of the Furious Five, and Secrets of the Scroll.
So Po basically brought the furious five together without knowing it

The original Dragon warrior gather himself the original furious 5, Po did it too unknowingly. All that talk about the universe from Oogway is certified now.

When you learn her backstory, so much from the first move makes much more sense.. the anger from Po taking her spot as the dragon warrior, the begging for Shifu to let her and the rest of the five to defeat Tai Lung, the desperation to sneak out and go by herself to fight him all because she wanted the chance to finally be approved of.
Po and Tigress' relationship is very complex and has transcended further than most people will ever try to understand, but it's very, very cool once you know; How Tigress was finally given peace through the friendship she gained with Po, a character that likely destroyed her emotionally after the choosing of the Dragon Warrior. Everything comes full-circle once she receives the approval and the love displayed by Po, creating the incredible bond they have now.
She probably also felt a responsibility to become the dragon warrior after what had happened with her adopted brother and felt a great need to right his wrong.
I love Tigress,she is so well written:

Tigress is a character I don't see enough hype for. Her backstory and character is amazing and pleasing to watch, when I was a child I loved her because "She's a tiger girl who knows kung fu." Period. But as I get older I realize I love her for her design, her backstory, and her actions despite her tragic childhood.
Maybe you could do the history of the furious 5. From the first 5 to the last we know of. Either way your videos are amazing.
Thank You so much for this, I'm so happy to see this. Tigress is my favorite female character because she's not a stereotype, she's a complex character who we see have development in every movie. Tigress and Po are my favorites because of the reasons I mentioned before.
The animals represent different aspects of martial arts;
Tiger = Agression
Crane = Balance
Mantis = Speed
Monkey = Agility
Vipor = Flexibility
I'm guessing from Po's demeanor a panda (though not a traditional animal or style) would represent innocence.
And the Dragon = Invincibility.

the 4 movie (if there is one) NEEDS to be about tigress, she is by far the most fleshed out member of the group and I really want them to adress how shifu was a pretty bad father, great master but not very loving and you can see how that affected her, in "the secret of the scroll" tigress almost has a panic attack when shifu tells her he is dissapointed of her, man, she might be an adult but the insecutiry is still there all through the first 2 movies.

As a kid, I would constantly rewatch kung fu panda: secrets of the furious five just to watch Tigress' story (and Viper's because I related to her) and she's always been my favorite.

Tigress really just wanted love and acceptance from the world and the people she looked up to. If only Shifu hadn't been so strict on her she could feel that and honestly not become so brooding, jaded, mean and difficult to get along with even when you think the Furious 5 and Po become her friends/ family

She's not very fond of hugs. And I'm sure she would accidentally break your back if she ever tried hugging you if you're in the Kung Fu Panda franchise considering that she's a tiger. And we know that Shifu helped Tigress control her strength when she was a cub, but if she forgot to control her strength when she hugs you, then yeah, what I said before would happen haha.

Yeah, I feel like Tai Lung went crazy and imprisoned RIGHT before Tigress came in. If he had not destroyed the villiage, they could have possibly been siblings...
OR more interestingly, maybe she would have been HIS pupil/ daughter. Like, instead of going mad and destroying everything, he goes to Oogway, and asks/ demands to know how he can prove there is not darkness inside him. How he can become worthy to become the dragon warrior. And Oogway, interested in this new development, suggests he look outside himself, to help himself.
Which is when the call for the baby tiger gets called in, and Shifu asks him to check it out. Tai Lung meets her and has first hand experience with the strength and teaches her... maybe differently. Maybe the same. But he teaches Tigress of her power...than takes her in as his student.

Actually, there is canonical evidence to suggest that not ONLY were they alive at the same time, but that Tigress was adopted immediately after Tai Lung went to prison.
Tai Lung was in prison for 20 years. We know this because he himself, screamed it at Shifu in their final confrontation.
And in Kung Fu Panda 2, Tigress and Po are talking/training on a boat, in which she says she punched the iron wood trees, and thus removed all feeling in her palms. This training, according to her, took 20 years.
There's even further evidence that shows she was adopted right after Tai Lung went to jail, when there is a flashback to her as a cub in The first Kung Fu Panda movie. After Shifu corrects her form, he is seen limping as he walks away from her. Because his injury from Tai Lung is still fresh.
This means that had Tai Lung not attacked the villiage, he would have met Tigress when she went to live in the Jade temple. And possibly would have been one of her teacher, if not be placed as her primary master/care giver, as a sort of test to see if he had the compassion to become the dragon warrior.
Who are these heartless bastards who abandoned tigress, who are Tigress's parents?🤔🤔🤔

First, tai lung causes shi fu to have that mentality of not putting his all in teaching. And then po comes in and claims the dragon warrior title. I love po, tai lung and shi fu but I always felt like her hard work was forgotten/ not recognised as much 🥲

Apparently there are gonna be 3 more Kung Fu Panda movies centered around Tigress from what I’ve heard. It’d make sense since Po has already completed his journey of character development while Tigress, who did lighten up a lot more as a friend, hasn’t really been shown much development aside from that. The stories from her life are different from the other members of the Five. While everyone else is generally still the same as when they formed up, Tigress is still developing because of her past.

I wish they'd give her her own film spin-off like Puss in Boots in the Shrek franchise - where she goes on a journey to discover her past. I have a theory that her parents were fleeing from some terrible danger and they didn't expect to survive, so they left her at the orphanage so she'd be safe. It would be awesome if she discovered some of her family members still alive
Tigress is a strong fearless master of the furious five, she has a heartbreaking backstory and claims to have no true family, she always acts fearlessly, because she was scared the other would see her as a mental break down.
She didn't want Po, to go through the same thing she did, so she acts nicer in the 2nd movie after knowing what happened to Po. She is more understanding and helpful to po because she doesn't want Po feeling worthless like she did.
Tigress is my fav character, she may act fearless, but inside she's really understanding when her friends are going through something hard.

If Shifu did give Tigress the same amount of love as Tai Lung, would she end up as Tai Lung did? That would be the reason for Shifu's ways of discipline onto Tigress
The issue is Shifu raised Tai Lung also with high expectations to become dragon warrior. While he did love him, he filled him with unreasonable expectations and due to that, Tai Lung became consumed by it. In a way, they both suffered. Tai Lung believed, due to Shifu, that he was more than enough and that Shifu should have stuck up for him.
Tigress, who received seldom any compassion, believed she was not enough and that she would never reach Shifu’s expectations. Shifu kinda failed them both

Tigress deserves to have her own movie after po, I want the movie to be about her finding her love and peace within herself because she’s always suffering from a traumatic past. Mabye somehow she can learn not to hold in her emotions and to let it all out and that it’s ok for her to cry
As great as Tigress was, her display of talent didn't quite reach the level of Tai Lung. Case and point: the same scene where they both struck that dummy - Tai Lung was able to knock over one of the weapons as the dummy ricocheted off of the wall, but Tigress was only able to make it spin a little. It gives more reason for why Shifu never saw Tigress as equal to Tai Lung.
In the PS3/360 game based on the movie, in one level where you play as Mr. Shifu rescuing the Furious Five, during the opening cutscene Tai Lung says to Tigress "You forget - I was there at the beginning, when you were a young cub. Are you the favorite now?" which hints that Tai Lung was her Foster Brother and that they may have known each other before he turned evil. Just imagine if he was nice to her and was the "Big Brother", how her seeing that someone like that so close to her could turn evil might have effected her.

Basically, Po became a Kung Fu Master because on Tigresses list, it showed many of the masters, and The Furious 5 became the furious 5 because of Po
I’d honestly love a movie about Master Tigress.
Ever since I first saw tigress I thought she was the coolest animated talking animal I have ever seen. I wanted to know everything about her and became a fan of her and the other characters. I wont lie as a kid I was pretty obsessed with her. I still have plush of her and tai lung from the first movie to this day. Wish I had her action figure. I wonder why they didn't make the same awesome action figures for kungfu panda 2 and 3

This is what I like about characters their potential shows a little bit about themselves but fades away and later returns like Tigress learning to control her wild Instincts while trying to learn Kung Fu
Did the people who ran that orphanage actually placed Tigress in solitary confinement??? This is so sad. 😥 I really feel bad for Tigress fir all the suffering she had to go through in her life.
I love the Kung Fu Panda trilogy, and Tigress has been my favourite since I was little, but I regret a little that she wasn’t given more closure, even in a quiet moment of any of the three movies.
I understand that she isn’t the central character, and I was able to enjoy her story anyway as I enjoyed all of the secondary protagonists stories and appearances, but from the beginning her parallels to Tai Lung and those ties to Shifu and his regret were so intentional and compelling, I feel like the story may have benefited from even an unspoken moment or a shared glance between Tigress and Shifu.
Both of their characters have been shown to be deeply wounded, even as they grow throughout the trilogy and find peace in themselves.
Maybe it’s just wishful thinking, but I would have enjoyed it so much if there was just a moment that wrapped up these two character’s connected stories.
This backstory basically explains why the Tigress was so unhappy with the unexpected choice of a "random panda" as a dragon warrior.
I've always loved the 2D animation in this franchise, it's so good!
You know, this one deserves her own movie cuz she has such a compelling backstory it can be called tigress.
They can show some more of her relationship with shifu and some views of after kfp 3 where she can train under Po and learn more about mastery of self.
We don't know as much as we would like to about tigress so a movie dedicated to her story would definitely help us.
It would show us exactly what shifu did that made her so incredibly tough and shut away from the world.
I would definitely watch Tigress punch the ironwood trees. That's tough.
She's devoted to kung fu and, as u mentioned, she tied her self worth with kung fu.

What’s with all the parents in the kung fu panda universe abandoning their babies? It happened to shifu, tai lung, tigress and po. Po I can get but what’s with the other three?
I remember when I first watch Kong Fu Panda I didn't really like tigress but after watching the 3 movies and some of the animated shorts and episodes that used to be on Nickelodeon she grew on me and became my favorite character in the Kong Fu Panda universe (with viper being second)
Tigeress is someone you do NOT want to mess with or even underestimate.

Since we're restricted to animals we can find in China I would normally go for leopard or tiger, but fox and wolf aren't bad either. As for herbivores, red panda definitely works.

Tigress and Viper were my favorite backstories
One fundamental rule of the universe is Phineas&Ferbs mom never knows what's going on. she under ground for what could be written off as a weather abnormally . . but can Murphys law trump that rule . I'm mean imagine her reaction to being taken prisoner by those pistachios. Bet called Candace.

I thought she was annoying at first but rewatching the first movie I see why she was upset. She tried to force herself to be the dragon warrior to finally get recognition from shifu how he did tai lung and she was jealous that he never showed her that love or affection like he did him and even po. All she ever wanted was shifu to love her and show it and she didn’t get it. I felt bad

Her story inspires me in every training session and even when the efforts hurt so much that the pain in my legs an arms try to knock me out, I ask myself ... what would Tigress do
