One of Keanu’s most underrated films. Peter Stormare’s portrayal of Lucifer was incredible, he nailed it. Also Keanu has said that if there was one character he would love to play again, it’s John Constantine hopefully we get a sequel soon.
Read the original Hellblazer comics and you'll see how much of a watered down parody this film is.

Yeah not only is this movie a shadow of its source material but as entertaining as Stormare is, his performance as Lucifer isn’t even in the universe as “nailed”.

Viggo Mortensen definitely gives an equally stellar performance in The Prophecy. A different take but just as good.

I am not 100% sure, but I think Keanu has also aged a few years since then. But since we all know he's immortal, it probably wouldn't matter.

Constantine in the comics had an even more ingenious gambit, in order to save his life. He sold his soul to several demons before committing suicide. These demons would not cede their rights to the soul to any of the others, so they resurrected him and cured his cancer, for until they could come to an agreement (one which would never come, because they could never get along).
Also: John Constantine in the comics is British, and based off of the musician Sting. His name isn't pronounced ConstanTEEN, but ConstanTINE. In the comics, John has mentioned that there's an American who does similar work to him, but he pronounces his name differently (cheeky reference to the movie). Chaz is the only friend of his that never gets killed (it's a running gag, as anyone else he gets close to doesn't have long to live).

Another good movie that has a dark tone like this with its own weird lore but not based on a comic is Dark City. Was overshadowed by the Matrix, and they saddled the theatrical release with an opening narration that basically explained everything.

Jen, I know you love the portrayal of Lou aka Lucifer. His clean white Armani suit. His imagination for torture in hell, with hell fire theme parks, bug farms, forever endless thirst, and Infinite dust storms. -------- I love how Lucifer maintains a chit chat style of dialogue as he makes quick decisions during some hellish negotiations. This movie has the perfect portrayal of the devil and his demonites. ------- Constantine is certainly the family-friendly version of, 'The Exorcist'.

Yes, white suit, tared foots, black veins, Hannibal Lector's kind of face, they put lots of effort here, and it paid.
They are currently working on a sequel to this movie with Keanu Reeves returning. So excited for that. Same director coming back also.

Constantine was created by Alan Moore (V for Vendetta, Watchmen, etc.) during the first couple of years of his legendary run writing Swamp Thing. Excellent commentary as usual. Please have a nice weekend.

_I think the impact of superheroes on popular culture is both tremendously embarrassing and not a little worrying. While these characters were originally perfectly suited to stimulating the imaginations of their twelve or thirteen year-old audience, today’s franchised übermenschen, aimed at a supposedly adult audience, seem to be serving some kind of different function, and fulfilling different needs. Primarily, mass-market superhero movies seem to be abetting an audience who do not wish to relinquish their grip on (a) their relatively reassuring childhoods, or (b)the relatively reassuring 20th century. The continuing popularity of these movies to me suggests some kind of deliberate, self-imposed state of emotional arrest, combined with an numbing condition of cultural stasis that can be witnessed in comics, movies, popular music and, indeed, right across the cultural spectrum. The superheroes themselves - largely written and drawn by creators who have never stood up for their own rights against the companies that employ them, much less the rights of a Jack Kirby or Jerry Siegel or Joe Schuster - would seem to be largely employed as cowardice compensators, perhaps a bit like the handgun on the nightstand. I would also remark that save for a smattering of non-white characters (and non-white creators) these books and these iconic characters are still very much white supremacist dreams of the master race. The Devil's Advocate is a really underrated film that not many people talk about, so I'll gladly watch a reaction to it!
Even though this movie got a bit of backlash at release since it had very, very little in common with the source material, I think overall this movie is fairly well regarded now and people have come to appreciate it more. The cinematography and editing is great, and the story is really good as well. If people thought of it as it's own thing and not an adaptation then it would have had much better initial reception. But, I'm glad it's finally getting a sequel and I'm very curious where they could go with the story seeing as it's been almost 20 years since the first.
I catch myself sometimes saying "They have the Spear of Destiny" in the way Peter Stormare says it. People look at me strangely but that's normal for me

Fallen (1998) is amazing. One of Denzel's best, in my opinion. Highly underrated gem.

Yes. Please watch "The Devils Advocate". I enjoyed Keanu's version of Constantine. In the DC Universe John Constantine is British.
There was a Constantine TV show that was very good. The actor playing the character was Matt Ryan. He played the character more comic book accurate than Keanu did. I am fan of Keanu but Matt plays the character much better. There is animated movie where Kevin Conroy’s Batman gets Constantine, and other magical and Monster lite characters of the Justice League together to fight a magical villain. These characters are Zatanna the magician, Eterigan who is an immortal cursed man named Jason Blood from Arthurian time that is cursed to transform into a demon to fight magical threats, Swamp Thing, and Dead Man who is a ghost, named Austin Brand, that fights to balance Karma by possessing people. This team is called Justice League Dark. There is one Justice League member that is their own Dr Strange lite character named Dr Fate. He would be on the JL Dark team as well. Guillermo Del Toro was supposed to do a live action movie about these characters but WB has creative differences with him and they canceled the movie, made the animated movie instead and took some of the ideas from Del Toro’s script to make the first Suicide Squad movie which was TERRIBLE! I wish we got the JL Dark movie instead.
Spear of Destiny so it is s spear head not a dagger. Since most spear shafts are made out of wood, they are likely to decay, leaving only the metal spear heads behind.

I enjoyed you reacting to one of my all time favorite movies! It’s certainly more than a horror. Gabriel and Lucifer, Constantine and Angela are so iconic in this. I have a massive, massive screen crush on Tilda Swinton playing the androgynous Gabriel here.
This is the 2nd movie with Keanu Reeves and Rachel Weisz ... The first was a movie called CHAIN REACTION ( 1996 Action )
A classic, I'm always up for some Constantine. While we're on the topic of good vs evil, angels and demons, satan... check out End Of Days with Arnold. Not among his best movies, but still a good flick with a similar vibe.

Thank you for covering this movie and for basically understanding the parts, and it was received pretty good, but it was not a Blockbuster, it's more of a cult hit now! I suggest you give it another watch, you will pick up on things that you missed that will make you go "OHHHHH ok!" ...

Film buffs may recognise actress Michelle Monaghan at the end there (she's the demon who says "Holy water?" when the sprinklers are turned on). Monaghan originally had a much bigger role as a character named "Ellie": a demon half-breed, Constantine's informant as well as his friend with benefits. She was cut out because the filmmakers felt that Constantine's character was not lonely enough if he was sexually active.
To answer the question this is the rare movie that departed from the original but was still good on it's own merits. In the comics Constantine was a british sorcerer modeled after the singer Sting (how he looked when he was young, of course).
The spear of Destiny ain't missing i found it at a yard sale back in the 90s it's setting on my coffee table right now

Being a Viennese I have always been amused by the movie because the actual "Spear of Destiny" also known as the "Holy Lance", which the prop in the movie is an exact copy of, belongs to the Imperial Regalia of the Emperors of the Holy Roman Empire (later Austrian Empire), which are kept at the Imperial Treasury in the Hofburg palace here in Vienna, Austria. 😁😁😁
The blade that many people claim to be the Holy Lance is in Vienna. Other so-called "Holy Lance" relics exist in other cities.

Fun fact: while the movie (and pretty much everyone else in the world) has decided John's surname is pronounced con-stan-teen, in the comics Alan Moore (the creator) intended the pronunciation to be con-stan-tyne. As the character himself has said "it rhymes with fine" :D
There was a TV series that was a littler closer to the graphic novels. I really liked the actors in it.
I met Peter Storemare who plays Satan in this film. At the time I was working for a security company in Chicago while filming the tv show Prison Break. I also have a dvd made by Wade Williams who handed the dvd out to everyone at the Prison. Peter was such an amazing person and very funny guy to meet. He always cracked jokes to everyone on set. Peter threw a death party and handed me a paper for his party. I was lucky enough to go. I had a blast. I still have the paper Peter handed to me and have the dvd Wade gave me at the Prison. I got a pic with Peter but an old friend of mine stole it from me which is bizarre. I don’t talk to him anymore. At his death party I was able to meet his mother who he looked so much like. Very nice woman too like he is in person. At the time he had his dog Garbo which was a Doberman Pincher dog. She was so kind and loved to explore the prison. Peter is a big fan of Greta Garbo acting and that is why his dog was named Garbo at the time

Don't get me wrong Peter Stormare was fantastic as Lucifer, but David Bowie should have been cast as he is who Lucifer was modeled after in the comics and I think he would have been fantastic and as much as him and Tilda Swinton looked alike them playing siblings in this would have been awesome.

I don't watch much in the way of TV, anymore, but, when I did, I would watch Constantine any time I saw it was on, no matter where it was in the movie.

Is it true to the comics? Not really. They didn't have the time to really get into his backstory, and superficially he doesn't resemble the blond British man from the comics... but I feel like the spirit is there, and I really enjoy this movie. Everyone in it does a great job.
This is apparently the role Keanu would most like to reprise.
This was a Jen movie. It kept her alert and involved, so cool. One of the reasons she is such a great reactor. I liked the novels and still really enjoyed the movie and Reeves is the only person who could have played this so good.
Some fun world building here. Love some quality heavens and hell lore.

Originally a British character based on legendary artist, STING.
His earlier comic series was called "HELLBLAZER" and the movie's plot is

But his love/hate relationship with Lucifer Morningstar is just as constant
in the bigger scheme of things.
Keanu Reeves got the role when originally It would've been Nicolas Cage,
who went on to be another supernatural hero, Marvel's Ghost Rider, who
Keanu Reeves had actually wanted to play since childhood.
British actor Matt Ryan portrayed Constantine (2014-2021) between
live-action television and animated films, did pretty well too.
Back in 2020, It was announced that Keanu Reeves will return as Constantine
and so will director Lawrence.
This movie somehow manages to feel yucky without being gross.
Really fascinating way to approach this kind of horror material without it getting too heavy.

A Perfect Circle made a single for this movie, which you hear briefly in the club scene. Probably one of my favorite bands. 13th Step and Eat the Elephant are two very noteworthy albums of theirs, if you're curious.

I read the graphic novels and watched this movie in the theaters. I just wished they made a sequel for this movie. You definitely should see The Devil's Advocate.

It doesn't stay at all close to the "Hellblazer" graphic novels. John Constantine is English and blonde, based either on Young Americans era Bowie or Billy idol. He's an occultist, some would say a wizard, but not damned in the way portrayed in the movie, which is good but not Constantine. There was an early 2000s TV series which portrays him much more accurately (well worth a look in) and he turns up in DCs Legends of Tomorrow and in the Justice League Dark animated movie. He first appeared as a kind of metaphysical teacher for Swamp Thing in the Alan Moore era of those comics.

To answer your question about how it was received, if I remember correctly critics didn't like it, general audiences didn't know what to make of it, and devotees of the graphic novels despised it -- and still do. I, however, couldn't care less about all that and I didn't even really enjoy the TV series, which is supposed to be much closer to the original character and story. I like this story and this John Constantine and would happily see another if they make one.
Fun fact: Constantine was created by British comic book author Alan Moore (Watchmen, V for Vendetta) and introduced in a graphic novel Swamp Thing in 1985. Later on he starred his own series and appeared across various different DC/Vertigo properties like The Sandman, The Books of Magic, Lucifer or more mainline DC comics like Justice League or Batman.
Fun fact 2: Constantine in comics is British and his name is not pronounced like in the movie. It's pronounced with a -tine that rhymes with pine. The movie is an Americanized version and they pronounced it more like Constanteen. For me, Peter Stormare's version of Lucifer is the star of the show. He perfectly pulls off being both threatening and hilarious at the same time. It's a strange thing to have a favorite of, but regardless he is my favorite version of Satan. In second place, for obvious reasons, is Elizabeth Hurley's version in Bedazzled.

One of my guilty pleasures. To be fair, it's a pretty decent flicks and if you like this sort of thing. check out The Prophecy with Christopher Walken as the Arcangel Gabriel and Vigo Mortinson as the Devil. Very similar feeling but I think The Prophecy is a bit more creepy. Devils Advocate is also another good film.
