I do believe the reason there may have two reasons to why Kirby was not added in the prototype.
The first is pretty loose, but it may have been Sakurai not wanting to add favoritism to his own series like he did two years later with Melee.
The other and most likely being that Kirby is actually more complex to program due to the copy ability.

What I always found interesting about Smash 64 is that only two franchises get two characters to represent it: Mario and Pokemon, arguably the two most popular and most well-selling Nintendo franchises. Zelda is a serious contender and frequently comes up second on people's lists of most iconic Nintendo franchises, but I think the sheer ferocity with which Pokemon took over the world with a single game really marked its place in gaming history as something special. Every other character comes from an entirely unique series which makes the roster, well, incredibly unique.

I agree it has always been a mix of of those 5 points you mentioned: Iconicness, popularity, moveset viability, ease of implementation, and relevance.
However, I feel like most Smash fans put more stock into iconicness, popularity and relevance and forget that Sakurai has always added in some characters largely because of moveset viability and/or ease of implementation alone. Samus may have made it in more because of that than relevance, because she is humanoid and would have essentially borrowed the same frame that Captain Falcon did.
There is, however, one more point that can get a character into Smash that you did not list: Bias/favor. This helped Ness, Lucas, Snake, likely Joker, and probably others.

I have to admit in my headcanon I considered the original 4 to be Mario, Link, Kirby and Pikachu considering how they are always the first announced (especially as seen in the original Brawl teaser) and by far the biggest franchises of Nintendo (well Super Mario, Legend of Zelda and Pokemon are. But as Kirby is Sakurai's creation he gets that special nod) and had that icon status. Or heck with how ultimate went with numbering all of them I at least thought the first four were Mario, Donkey Kong, Link and Samus. But interesting it was Mario, Donkey Kong Samus and Fox due to them being the easiest to program and shape in the beta. I think Samus was also chosen as one of the first due to realizing they needed at least one female fighter. I admit when I first played Smash brothers back in 99 I didn't know anything about Metriod or Legend of Zelda so had no idea that Samus was a woman or that Link... wasn't Zelda. So shows how stupid I was at the time but still really cool list can't wait to find out more about the cut characters and then the choices for Melee and beyond.

A major part of character selection that you missed out on is developing a balanced meta through archetypes. The most common archetypes for fighting game characters are balance, power, speed, and range. This can be seen pretty prominently in Smash 64 and the selection of characters. Mario is balance, Donkey Kong is power, Fox is speed, and Samus is range. The rest of the roster sticks pretty close to this formula. There are three characters for each archetype with the exception of power as Jigglypuff is a special case that doesn't fall within any of the major archetypes.

Not only because Sakurai is a big SNK fan but also, he was first introduced only two years before Smash, and he is basically a copy of Kyo (KOFs main character) but without fire powers thus he has the same basic attacks but different special moves, just like Jigglypuff and Kirby

I've also noticed that Smash adds characters with unique roles and abilities. For example, before Joker we never had a high schooler before. Min Min is a restaurant owner, Banjo and Kazooie are essentially hillbillies, Terry is a LITERAL street fighter, Byleth is a teacher, and so on and so on. Basically, a character has a bigger chance to get added if they add a new role to the roster of fighters, if they were seen on a Nintendo console before inclusion, and if they have a new kind of game to add to the mix. Bonus points if they have crossed paths with other Smash characters in other forms of media, as well as relevance to the whole of Nintendo's rich history.

Ness mat not have had international popularity but the series was massively popular in Japan. To this day they still use the soundtrack as sheet music in kids music classes, that was also a factor when making the Mother 3 soundtrack. And at the time of Smash 64 Earthbound was at it's height of local popularity

What about the reason behind the creation of Master Hand (and why he looks a bit different in 64 than in the rest of the series)?

He’s the creator of that universe but there is a lack of official informations about it. He appears in the intro and in the final stage

Roger Klotz In 64, he’s clearly just a large version of Mario’s glove but in the sequels, he doesn’t have the cuff.

Are guns really ok in smash bros?

Yep! joker and bayonetta each use guns in their moveset in an integral way, and snake has a cosmetic one on his leg, hope this helps! :)

They might not have been some time ago. But I think because of how times have changed, most kids play shooters and even Fortnite can use realistic firearms without jacking up its age rating. We have seen characters like Bayonetta and Joker who use more realistic firearms. Compared to laser blasters of old.

This is the reason why link in smash 64 doesnt have the details that he does in Ocarina of time. Like him left arm having much more detail. I feel like smash 64's link is a combination of Young link and Adult Link form Ocarina of Time.

  • @T-Dawg75

I really appreciate Ness’s inclusion. Here we have a character from a game that only sold 140,000 copies in the west, which was terrible, about 0.5 million sales in Japan, (I think, correct me if I’m wrong) but the few people who actually knew who ness was in America certainly grew a larger appreciation of smash at the time. If you have ever heard of StevenPlays, he did play Earthbound when it first released, one of the few, and it became his favorite game. He had no idea Ness was in smash, the original 8 where the only ones in the marketing, so when he finally discovered Ness, he was overcome by tears of joy. Lovely.

While it's likely a placeholder model, there is a ness model, or at least ness look alike in a few earthbound 64 videos (off the top of my head there's a brief shot of him walking in a forest, and driving in the desert)
Also question: In future videos will any veterans who were shaky and/or did get cut (if they aren't covered by the video of ones who didn't make it for any reason) be included in these? E.G. suppossedly Ness was at risk of being replaced by Lucas in Melee, or Jigglypuff seemingly only got in Brawl due to the delay.
